    Castle ruin Laimburg
Kaltern an der Weinstraße/Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

Laimburg Castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Laimburg as a residence and was intended to secure the transition over the “Kreithersattel”, the connection between the Val d'Adige valley and the Oltradige/Überetsch valley. Originally, the castle was built in Romanesque style and later, in 1342, extended in Gothic style. Towards the end of the 15th century the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. In 2002 the castle was completely restored and secured and is freely accessible ever since.

    Ski areas in the region
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

There are 5 ski areas located around Lana, which form part of the greater Ortler ski arena; all five are accessible with one single passcard. These are the five ski areas in the sports and leisure region Meraner Land, and are just as diverse as the region itself.

Aside from the more family-oriented ski area San Vigilio, the area Merano 2000 caters to a younger urban clientele, who look for a livelier entertainment offering after a day of skiing or tobogganing. Schwemmalm in Ulten Valley near Lana is one of the better kept secrets of the region. Ski tourers, combination skiers and freeriders find a variety of challenges here.

Those, who reside in the car-free ski area of Pfelders in the Passeier Valley, never walk longer than three minutes to the nearest ski lift. Among the favourite activities for visitors here are the tours on horseback across snowy landscapes, ice skating on natural ice, cross-country skiing and tobogganing.

At the Schnalser glacier, snow can be found all year round! Skiers enjoy the broad and snow-safe tracks on the glacier. Freestylers, on the other hand, prefer the large-scale local Snowpark.

In all five of these ski areas, snow is guaranteed until the end of March - in the Schnals Valley until the end of June. All 5 areas also offer a large selection of cosy snow huts, pubs and restaurants for a pleasurable resting time.

    Churches & Monasteries
The chapel of the Kastelbell Castle
    Kastelbell-Tschars/Castelbello-Ciardes, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

The picturesque Castelbello Castle, first mentioned in 1238, was built by the Lords of Montalban. Majestically, it is situated on a cliff on the left bank of the Adige River. Because of its exposed position, the castle had to be protected by strong fortifications, which needed to be remodernized over the years. In 1813 and 1824, the castle was largely destroyed by fire. The Counts of Hendl rebuilt only a small part for residential purposes. At the end of a protracted court process held over decades between Count Siegmund von Hendl and the Republic of Italy for the possession of the castle, eventually a settlement was reached. This allowed the State to acquire the castle. The Castelbello Castle is the cultural center of the village. In addition to permanent exhibitions in Spring and Autumn, alternating art exhibitions take place here.
The building of the chapel followed in the late 13th or early 14th cent. The walls contain a frieze with the Twelve Apostles as well as texts from the Confession of Faith. Because the apostles are turned towards one another in pairs, the quotations are alternately written in plain and inverted script.

The curch of the fourteen holy helpers
    Neumarkt/Egna, Alto Adige Wine Road

The Capuchin monastery and its small church were built between 1617 and 1620. The church has a simple design in accordance with the style and regulations of the Capuchin Order: simple in terms of furnishings, bare walls, barrel vaults, and a side chapel on the south side. The high altar is dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The pulpit and the side altars are neo-Romanesque and date back to the 19th century. The altar of the side chapel contains a statue of the mother of God with Child from the middle of the 16th century, which is said to have miraculous powers. Between 1999 and 2003, the whole complex was carefully restored. In the little church, this also led to the renewal of the windows and the benches, which – in harmony with the surroundings – are now simple and linear. Thus, the light penetrates through seven beautiful glass panes that seem to communicate with the faithful through their symbolic meaning of colors and number.

    Mountain guide Enrico Baccanti
    Corvara, Dolomites Region Alta Badia
I have been practising the profession of mountain guide for over 30 years. Mine has been a life choice I have strongly desired since I was a boy, when I only wanted to spend all my time in the mountains. The Dolomites and Corvara are my favourite place for climbing, hiking and off-piste descents in the surrounding mountains, but also in the Alps, the mountains of the Mediterranean, Scandinavia and many other places. Accompanying people on mountaineering activities is an important assumption of responsibility, but it means first of all understanding their expectations and opening up to them the most authentic aspects of the mountains. After having been part of a team of guides for many years, I preferred to do the job individually in order to give more attention to all those aspects that are important to me in this profession, first and foremost the friendship with the pupil.

"Every grain of that stone, every mineral glow of that mountain, cloaked in night, form, by themselves, a world. Even the struggle to the summit is enough to fill a man's heart." - Albert Camus
