    Technology Monument Monte San Vigilio
    Meran/Merano and environs

31 August 2012 marked exactly one hundred years since the Mount Vigiljoch cable car made its maiden voyage, the world's third suspended cable car approved for passengers. To mark this anniversary and beyond the cable car monument remembers this technological breakthrough.

In Lana, at the roundabout of Meranerstrasse / Ultnerstrasse streets, looking down to the station towards the valley, one of the decommissioned cabins of the Monte S. Vigilio cable car, still functioning today according to the latest safety standards, serves as an all-around visible eye-catcher.

The Lana Monte S. Vigilio Cable Car

As the world's third suspended cable car approved for passengers, in 1912 the cable car on Monte S. Vigilio made history. Today, rebuilt according to modern safety standards, the cable car is a technical monument of national importance.

Since the company of the Monte S. Vigilio cable car tried already in 1912 to attain a refined artistic impression, it proclaimed Gustav Birkenstaedt as the artistic consultant to the company, which included, beyond the cable car, also the planned “high colony” (Höhenkolonie). As a result, Birkenstaedt developed the plans for the mountain hotel located near the mountain station and for a holiday house model that proved influential for the emerging residential area.

In 2008 the cable car once again underwent a general refurbishment. New cabins allow passenger transportation today without accompaniment in the cabin, and a video surveillance system ensures maximum safety. The journey from Lana to Monte S. Vigilio (1,486 m above sea level) takes 8 minutes.

    Patronal feast: June 29th.

The church ruins date back to the 5th century AD. The building reminds of church buildings in Aquileia and Milan. During excavations, the old position of the altar as well as the relic chamber could be determined. The S. Peter ruin in Altenburg is probably the oldest Tyrolean church ruin. Its decay began with the closure of the church in 1782.

Church "St. Leonhard" in Unterplanitzing/Pianizza di Sotto

Patronal feast: November 6th The late Romanesque rotunda was probably connected to a medieval pilgrim hospice. On the frescoes on the inside, at the feet of the sculputre "St. Leonhard with the chain", the coat of arms of the lords von Fuchs is recognizable. Around 1420 a new building of the church was built. The equipment came from the "Grabenkirche" of Bolzano.

    Biotope Falschauer
    Meran/Merano and environs

How much habitat we let nature? Until the mid-20th century, the estuary was a 100-acre natural paradise in the ever more intensively used Adige Valley.

The whole Adige Valley was once a giant natural paradise full of ponds, riverside forests and bogs. People would keep away from the marshlands and its bad smell and instead settled on the elevated plains, hills and mountains of the area - not least because of the many floods. That explains the village development in many modern municipalities like Lana, Postal or Gargazzone.

Yet in the middle of the 20th century about 100 hectares of the lands in the river delta of the Valsura lay fallow. In the course of the German and Italian economic miracles the area experienced an unstoppable industrialisation that nearly upset its natural balance. When people started to rethink this ‘progress' in the 1970's the remains of the river delta of the Falschauer were declared a protected biotope.

Today the delta covers about 32 hectares, it is a refuge for many endangered animals and an irreplaceable habitat for more than 230 species of bird, including 50 breeding birds, amphibians, colubrids, fish and water insects, as well as for numerous rare plants.

Visitors who walk around in the accessible part of the mostly untouched delta can take a break at the ponds or bogs and listen to the countless number of birds and frogs.

A visit is possible throughout the year!

    Ice stick shooting
    Meran/Merano and environs

The traditional sport of the Alpine People

Ice stick shooting is as similar to curling, as skittles is to bowling. The technical differences are few, but while the latter have become popular sports around the globe, the former are celebrated in the Alpine countries as old traditions, just like fistfall and skittles.

Aside from the gymnasts and cyclists of Club Edelrot, the 'Eisschützen' (ice stick shooters) are the oldest sports club in Lana. Photographic archives prove that this winter sport has been popular in this area as far back as the late 18 hundreds, when the 'Fasslbinder' (coopers) from the Unterinntal Valley and the 'Eisenbahner' (railroaders) introduced ice stick shooting here in Lana. The 'Eisschützenverein Lana', which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008, is therefore one of the oldest ice stick shooter clubs in the country.

The practice location of the ice stick shooters is at the mouth of the Gola Canyon in Oberlana, which still today is the venue for local and regional ice stick shooting tournaments. Periodic meets, tournaments and festivities will ensure that this wonderful tradition will continue on into the future.

    Sledding in the Lana area
    Meran/Merano and environs

Most people from Lana probably sat on a sled even before they could walk, since sledding is one of the favourite pastimes of the area. It is no wonder, that the multiple world and Olympic luge champion Armin Zöggeler, comes from Foiana, in the Lana area.

The San Vigilio is right at the doorstep and it takes only a few minutes on the cable car to reach this magic winter wonderland. The well groomed sledding slope is ideal for family sledding trips as well as exiting rides with friends. The 4 km long slope offers everything a sledding fan desires: numerous curves and a sufficient incline.

However, there are also great conditions for big and small sledding fans in other ski areas around Lana, e. g. in Merano 2000 or the 3.5 km long sledding slope on the glacier in Schnalstal as well as the traditional slope on the Schwemmalm pasture in the Ulten Valley, that can be reached by foot in a mere 20 minutes walk through a magical winter forest.

    Ski areas in the region
    Meran/Merano and environs

There are 5 ski areas located around Lana, which form part of the greater Ortler ski arena; all five are accessible with one single passcard. These are the five ski areas in the sports and leisure region Meraner Land, and are just as diverse as the region itself.

Aside from the more family-oriented ski area San Vigilio, the area Merano 2000 caters to a younger urban clientele, who look for a livelier entertainment offering after a day of skiing or tobogganing. Schwemmalm in Ulten Valley near Lana is one of the better kept secrets of the region. Ski tourers, combination skiers and freeriders find a variety of challenges here.

Those, who reside in the car-free ski area of Pfelders in the Passeier Valley, never walk longer than three minutes to the nearest ski lift. Among the favourite activities for visitors here are the tours on horseback across snowy landscapes, ice skating on natural ice, cross-country skiing and tobogganing.

At the Schnalser glacier, snow can be found all year round! Skiers enjoy the broad and snow-safe tracks on the glacier. Freestylers, on the other hand, prefer the large-scale local Snowpark.

In all five of these ski areas, snow is guaranteed until the end of March - in the Schnals Valley until the end of June. All 5 areas also offer a large selection of cosy snow huts, pubs and restaurants for a pleasurable resting time.

    Lake Kaltern
    The South Tyrolean Wine Road

The Lake Kaltern The Mediterranean landscape around Lake Kalterer See leads many to the correct assumption that this lake really is the warmest lake in the Alps! There are four public beaches that offer direct access to the lake, known for its especially inviting water quality and colorful splendor! Sometimes it's a tint of deep blue, other times it mirrors the green of the surrounding landscape! And Lake Kalterer See is so versatile: row boats, sailboats, pedal boats and surf boards glide across the water. Yet it's so incredibly tranquil here. For sure you'll hear the sound of children's laughter; after all, this is their little corner of paradise. Quite simply, it's beautiful in the lake, on the lake and all around the lake.

    Gaul Canyon
    Meran/Merano and environs

    The Gaul Canyon....craggy and beautiful

Bizarre rock formations, unique vegetation and the picturesque location at the foot of Castle Braunsberg make the Gola Canyon in Lana charming and unique.

Only a few minutes from the centre of Lana you feel like you are in a different world: the Gola Canyon directly at the foot of the hill on which Castle Braunsberg is towering.

Steep rocky slopes rise above the pebbly riverbed of the Falschauer. Between the cool rock walls the temperature stays fresh even at the height of summer. A number of different rock types come together here.

Between the quartz porphyry and the primary gneiss rocks there is also a thin layer of granite. Between the massive rocks the mountain stream runs untamed and only a slim strip of land passes over the river.

Already for some decades the easily accessible meadow at the centre of the Gola Canyon has been used as a venue for numerous events. The glade is used for summer feasts as well as an atmospheric backdrop for the Lana open-air theatre.

From the Gola Meadow the well secured path continues over a number of suspension bridges deeper into the rocky canyon passing by a roaring waterfall.

You can follow it either into the narrowing, wild and romantic canyon or up to Castle Braunsberg, where a lovely view over Lana awaits you.

    Church of the Holy Cross
    Meran/Merano and environs

The Church of the Holy Cross Heilig Kreuz Kirche in Mitterlana is the central church in Lana and dates from the 20th century. The church was built during the term of office of the Dean, Rev. Alfred Delucca OT in the politically and economically difficult years between 1938 and 1943. The building was completed in 1950 and inaugurated during the Feast of Christ the King by Suffragan Bishop Oreste Rauzi of Trento.

The spherical roof of the tower is colloquially known as the Lana Apple by the local people. What is today's main parish church in Lana was built between 1938 and 1950 following plans by the famous Stuttgart church-builder, Otto Lindner, in the style of an ancient Roman basilica.

The people all have totally different personalities, there are no two alike. And this fact is worth studying. The best time is the morning, when your mind is still quite fresh. And the best place is Kaltern's main village market square. Just simply observe, with perhaps a cup of espresso, and - slow down the pace a bit.

Enjoy some ice cream near the fountain, no, here it's called gelato. Or perhaps even a cappuccino. But if you want to continue doing as the locals do in the afternoon, then it should be a glass of lightly chilled Kalterersee wine.
