    Mid-Pustertal Residential and Nursing Home
Olang/Valdaora, Dolomites Region Kronplatz/Plan de Corones

While nursing homes were formerly often pushed “into the green” on the outskirts of the village, it was decided in Valdaora/Olang to attach the elderly to the major facilities within the town center, where the school, kindergarten and other public institutions are to be found. The new nursing home has become an important meeting point. The four-story, wood-paneled structure houses two nursing units with 20 beds and associated spaces. Around the spacious foyer on the ground floor there is a café, a chapel, and a multipurpose room for events. In addition, an outpatient medical clinic and the offices of the district community are housed here. Glazed notches across the entry hall provide for good illumination; a partition of a pleasantly light, inviting architecture further emphasizes this impression through color, light natural stone and wood.

    Josef Rampold German-Language Primary School
    Urtijëi/Ortisei, Dolomites Region Val Gardena

The school is situated in the immediate vicinity of the parish church and the House of the Teutonic Order, and was built outside the old town in what was formerly a bog. Here the water table is only about one meter below the surface of the ground. In order to avoid a dangerous rise of groundwater in the area and thus circumvent repercussions in the historical buildings as a result of building the school, the structure was built on a “raft” 80 inches above the ground. Likewise because of the historical neighboring building, a long, single-story structure was planned that would not create competition from a design viewpoint but would, however. have its own distinct character. Under the wide, projecting flat roof and on the perimetric base plate a “forest” of tree trunks was placed in front of the façades, which allows for enough illumination but creates a solid impression in the oblique view. Depending on the viewing angle and light, the building differs distinctly in appearance.

    Casa JS
    Urtijëi/Ortisei, Dolomites Region Val Gardena

The residential complex is almost cube shaped with a low, pitched roof. It is situated on a through-road, next to a hotel. Due to the noise of the traffic and the lack of privacy a different design was called for: the concrete frame shields the south side from the road, the west facing side is mainly closed due to the proximity to the hotel and only the most necessary windows can be found on the north side. It is on the east facade that large, regularly spaced windows look out over an open space, as do the terrace areas of the roof top flats. These different, rhythmically placed windows leave a lively impression of the house.

    Nals Margreid Winery
    Nals/Nalles, Meran/Merano and environs

The vineyards that belong to the winery stretch from Margreid to Nals, covering 150 hectares, are farmed by 140 wine farmers. Both existing wineries were brought together in Nals in a new building in order to raise both capacity and quality. An entrance was added onto the old build with a tower and cellar areas with the latest cellar technology. The new building, made of a brown-red concrete, echoes the porphyritic cliffs nearby and the existing adjoining cellar. The new building is covered by a structurally interesting concrete roof with a large overhang, which blends into the landscape with its greenery. Beneath the freely suspended roof slab is a barrique cellar constructed from wood, like an oversized wine box, and marks the passageway to the inner courtyard. The structure blends harmoniously into the landscape.

    Eiche Residential Building
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs

The housing complex is situated north of the racetrack in a quiet residential area. The rectangular plot of land is reflected in the geometric lines of the four-story block of apartments containing sixteen flats: The outlines and facade are simple and clear, without any design effects. A large protruding attic forms a concise end to the roofline. The division of the front of the lightly plastered walls occurs through two types of window: full length balcony windows, and the windows of the rooms reaching up to the ceiling, which are placed in alternation, creating a lively structural arrangement. The colorful balcony parapets add to the visual effect. The clear design is of particular benefit inside the well laid out apartments − everything is light, friendly and easy to furnish.

    Former Casa del Fascio
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs

The Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit is one of Merano’s most important spiritual centers and art monuments. So it was deliberately a provocation towards the German-speaking religious population when the city’s fascist Italian-speaking government built its Casa del Fascio right next door, in order to obstruct the view of the historical church as you approach the old town. Even worse, the old hospital had to be demolished to make way for the new construction. Despite this architectural history, which is rather inglorious for the Italians, the building ranks among the masterpieces of Italian rationalism, architecturally speaking. The widely visible open tower, the horizontally layered facades, the bands of brick and loosened floor plan make this building one of the most interesting construction works of its time.

St. Zeno Parish Church in Naturns A Romanesque chancel chapel is known to have stood on the site of the present-day parish church which dates from 1200. The older pre- Carolingian building was later incorporated to become the apse of the present-day Late Gothic church which is dedicate to St. Zeno, patron saint who protects against flooding and erstwhile Bishop of Verona. It was built between 1474 and 1475. The choir was re-built in Baroque style in 1760.

Extension for Savoy Province Vocational School
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs

A very reserved building structure was created on a narrow building site between the multiform heritage-listed building of the former Grand Hotel Savoy and some simple row houses. The basic cubic shape tapers slightly at both of the lower floors, lending the solid building a floating feeling. Staggered windows in the facades, uniform in size, break up the building’s austerity. A transparent, visually light glass bridge elegantly links the new building with the facade of the old Savoy. The simple form of the new concrete structure, with flat roof, lends both buildings a contrapuntal aesthetic appeal. The cool clarity of the design is also reflected in the interior of the new building, which has a transparent and fluidly designed sequence of rooms.

Parish Church St. Vigilius in Colfosco
    Corvara, Dolomites Region Alta Badia

The late Gothic church of Colfosco, with the Sella Massif in the background, is a popular photo motif of the Dolomites.

The parish church of St. Vigil was first mentioned in 1419. In the following years it was restored and expanded several times.

Particularly interesting are the neo-Gothic lobby on the outer facade with a grooved and beveled pointed arch portal, the bulbous spire and the church altar. This dates from the late 19th century and is from the local artist Johann Valentin - Badia. In the middle niche of the altar there is an 18th century picture of the Virgin Mary and on the sides there are the statues of St. Vigilius and St. Kassian. For safety reasons, the valuable statue of St. Vigilius has been replaced with a copy.

    Farnstead Finailhof
    Schnals/Senales, Meran/Merano and environs

The Farmstead Finailhof is one of the oldest farms in Schnalstal Valley, first records date back to the 11th century. It is known for its rare visit in 1416. Those days the farmers harbored Duke Frederick IV by employing him as a shepherd. Until 1967, the farm was highest one in Europe which cultivated cereals. To preserve the rural culture and architecture the entire farm became a listed building in 1981. Today the family Gurschler lives with four generations on the farm and welcomes guests in their „Stube“ and a huge sunny terrace with a great view over the lake Vernago/Vernagt.

    The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs

Trauttmansdorff was honored as Italy's Most Beautiful Garden in 2005. The complex comprises approximately 12 hectares of gardens, with about 5,800 species of plants and 80 different garden landscapes. The gardens are crossed by paths and waterways, and lined with pavilions. The castle – once the holiday residence of Empress Sissi – has been meticulously restored and complemented by a restaurant and visitor center. In addition to elegant stainless-steel details for bridges, railings and furniture, of particular note are the Aviary and the Viewing Platform. These two modern structures lend the gardens an architectural three-dimensionality. Both represent light yet bold architecture, made of stainless or galvanized steel, and seem to float over the gardens. Visitors access the Viewing Platform across steps that are virtually transparent. The platform towers above the treetops; meanwhile a dizzying bridge high above the gardens protrudes out of the aviary.

    Oberholz Mountain Hut
    Deutschnofen/Nova Ponente, Dolomites Region Eggental

This mountain hut, located at 2.096m next to the cable station Oberholz in Obereggen, Dolomites, contains a restaurant and is located with direct connection to the ski slope. The cantilevering structure grows out of the hill like a fallen tree with three main branches creating a symbiosis with the landscape. Each of them is facing towards the three most important surrounding mountains: Mendola, Corno Nero and Corno Bianco. At the end of the branches a large glass facade frames the surrounding mountains from the interior of the hut. The sloped roof shape of the glasses takes his inspiration from typical huts in the area, while the branching roof and complex structural interior expresses a new and contemporary interpretation of the classic mountain hut. The interior is defined by a complex curvilinear and visible wood structure that gradually fades into walls and creates so called “pockets” for intimacy. The entire hut is constructed with wood: structural elements and interior in spruce, the facade in larch, furniture in oak - all typical woods from the area.

    Museum Ladin
Al Plan/San Vigilio, Dolomites Region Kronplatz/Plan de Corones

From 1230 forwards the castle was home to knights and caretakers in the Gader Valley, who were appointed by the Bishop of Brixen until 1803. Farmers inhabited it from that point on, until it was converted into the Museum of Ladin History and Culture, and was expanded. The central point of the information is, amongst others, the cave bear, Ursus ladinicus, for which a branch museum in St Kassian was created. A foyer area was added onto the castle with a bar and rooms for temporary exhibitions, area constructed from wood, steel and glass, which with its flat roof goes almost unnoticed next to the superior historical building, and is a good example of a timeless modern construction. Inside, robust wooden flooring and whitewashed walls create a neutral background for various exhibitions and floor-to-ceiling glass-paneled sections of the facade look out onto a gorgeous view.

    Gamper Residential and Commercial Building
    Schenna/Scena, Meran/Merano and environs

The architects analyzed the surroundings carefully. Many of the structural elements of the local conditions  ̶ the course of the road, the volumes of the surrounding houses all the way up to Schenna Castle, which can be seen from here  ̶  merge again in this building, but with a modern twist. The residential building, sheathed with bright Eternit slabs, floats like a crystal on the blue-gray, stone-clad semi-basement, where the shops are located. A glass-clad gap between the stone-clad basement and the residential building brings light between the two components, into the goldsmith shop. It provides upscale, almost indirect illumination of the white wall partitions and ceilings, while the dark walnut wood paneling conveys solidity.

    Merano Civic Theater
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs

Magnificent buildings were created long the Passer Promenade, intended for the noble audiences of the Hapsburg Monarchy. The architect Martin Dulfer, who was 40 years old at the time, was able to build his first theater here, which became one of the most important representatives of the Baroque-style Art Nouveau; he followed this theater with three others. The theater in Merano was built in just fourteen months, under the supervision of Wilhelm Kürschner, who would later become Bolzano’s city architect. The iron construction of the stage area came from Munich, the stage equipment from Vienna and the seats from Berlin. Important details of the original structure have been changed, but the building remains one of South Tyrol’s few preserved Art Nouveau buildings. The theater’s clear plan is functionally divided into the stage area, auditorium, and foyer; it seats 500 spectators.

    Dahoam Nature Residence
    Schenna/Scena, Meran/Merano and environs

This energy-efficient residence was built alongside four holiday flats between the forest, meadows and vineyards. The larch wood used in the construction and shell as well as on the balconies of the upper floors, comes from stocks owned by the construction manager. The balconies are equipped with mobile sunshades, thus giving a unified, yet changing exterior appearance. The basement is partially built into the slope behind, in the style of massive construction. The front of the top floor is made entirely of glass panels in order to make the most of the splendid view. The conventional shape of the house, which blends well into the landscape, is an unusually elegant building with a lightweight feel to it, well thought out details and tasteful furnishings.

Ancient craftsmen zone with the old "Stricker-Mill"
    Lüsen/Luson, Brixen/Bressanone and environs

At Kaserbach, where hydroelectric power was once used, lies the former artisan zone that characterized village life back then. Our path leads past the smithy, the knitter mill and the old sawmill. At that time, the grain of the Lüsner farmers was ground in the mill. The "Stricker mill", whose historical roots reach back to the year 1645, has remained true to its original function until today.

    Places to See
The Hill of the Holy Sepulchre
    Villnöss/Funes, Dolomites Region Villnösstal

The Hill of the Holy Sepulchre is the most beautiful viewpoint of Tiso. The Holy Grave Chapel was built as a baroque building at the end of the 17th century. In it, the suffering and death of Jesus Christ was worshiped. After the entry of Italy into the First World War in May 1915, fortifications were built here on the order of the Austrian Empire army. They should serve as a defense against a possible invasion of Italian troops in the Isarco Valley, if the Dolomite front should fall. The trenches and a bunker were built by Russian prisoners. However, the defenses were not used during the First World War. However, during the final months of World War II, the bunker was used by the village population as protection against air raids and bombing.

    Boé Mountain Restaurant
    Corvara, Dolomites Region Alta Badia

Together with the pre-existing buildings, summit station of the cable car and pizza pavilion, the new mountain restaurant forms a courtyard situation sheltered from the wind in the very exposed, protected landscape site.  The new building, however, crouches down, an elongated single-story building, and appears almost as if part of the site. The architecture goes against the usual style of a mountain hut: a wide, cantilevered platform roof protects the underlying perimetric floor-to-ceiling glass façade, which makes the building appear more transparent and lighter. Familiar materials, though, were used: wood terraces, wood furniture, as well as natural stone masonry for the kitchen and adjoining room area. Three timber-clad cubes divide the otherwise completely open floor plan of the spacious guest area, which feels more like a lounge than a mountain hut.

    Churches & Monasteries
    Santa Barbara church
La Val, Dolomites Region Alta Badia

The Santa Barbara church, built in the late Gothic style, was built in the 15th century on a panoramic hill just outside the village of La Val.

Historical evidence indicates that the church built in honor of Santa Barbara, patron saint of miners, is the work of the miners of Valparola, who worked the iron minerals extracted from Monte Pore.

The painting on the outside wall depictings a crucifixion in the open countryside and various mural paintings inside are of particular historical value.

The Santa Barbara church can be reached with just a half-hour walk from the village centre of La Val along the "Memento Vivere" meditation path, consisting of the stations "Birth", "Childhood", "Youth", "Adults age" and "Old age".
