Elementary School in San Pietro in Funes
    Villnöss/Funes, Dolomites Region Villnösstal

The architects' aim with the primary school building in San Pietro/St. Peter in Funes/Villnöss was to start a new dialogue with the village. The building complex consists of several interconnected building parts of different heights, which are arranged in a kind of semicircle around an inner courtyard. The buildings encase and protect the inner courtyard, which is used by the children as a playground and rest area. The structural details of this project are child-friendly and simple in design: the school borders directly on the surrounding meadows, the walls of the building are plastered white, and the windows and doors on the fronts have different sizes and shapes. The surrounding landscape "infiltrates" into the interior of the school and is reinforced by the alignment and opening of the windows.

This small and cosy chapel was built in 1702 by order of the Commander Johann Jakob Count Thun. It was the second chapel, after the one in Klobenstein that was devoted to the Saint who was greatly revered by him. It is also the crowning conclusion of his building activities carried out at the manor of the Teutonic Order in Siebeneich which began in 1664. The altar with two columns and statues of St. John and St. Jacob, who are the patron saints of the Commander, is credited to the sculptor Cristoforo Benedetti from Castione.

Pfistrad Alm Mountain Museum in St. Leonhard/S. Leonardo
St.Leonhard in Passeier/San Leonardo in Passiria, Meran/Merano and environs

The historic gothic block house is one of the oldest existing wooden structures in South Tyrol. Listed under a historical preservation order in 1982, the old kitchen has an open-hearth fireplace typical of the Alpine mountain regions. In 2000, MuseumPasseier established a small museum illustrating traditional rural life, farming the pastures and the local way of life in medieval times. The exhibition remains open throughout the summer months.

Not far from the animal compound lies the late Baroque Chapel of St. Anna, dating from 1796.

Getting there: starting from the center of St. Leonhard/San Leonardo, pass the church on trail no. 13 or just follow the directions to St. Anna. The ascent along the forest road up a moderately steep slope (difference in altitude: 650m) takes about 2.5 hrs, and is also suited to mountain bikes.

In a side valley at an altitude of 1,350m a.s.l., the mountain pasture is located in a picturesque setting north-east of St. Leonhard/San Leonardo. Open in summer.

    Cascade Pool
Sand in Taufers/Campo Tures, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina

A few minutes on foot from Sand in Taufers, near the Ahr, the Rein Valley waterfalls and a naturally formed swimming pool, stands a sports center, which is recognizable by the building's elongated, lightly curved roof. The interlocking of exterior and interior space defines the design. Light shines in from all sides through the glass panelling of the building, providing views of the surrounding area and of the outdoor pool which blends into the landscape. The terraces of the pool are reminiscent of the waterfalls. The interior rooms form a walkway between the areas and provide the required fixed points in the building that simultaneously offer stability next to the seemingly freely swaying roof. Few materials were used in the design: stainless steel basins, rough concrete for the walls, non-slip stone for the flooring, light acoustic ceilings, and the steel and glass facades which are very light in appearance.

    Church Saint Joseph in Vilpian
Terlan/Terlano, The South Tyrolean Wine Road

    Old Joseph's Church

The old, small church was constructed in 1639 and dedicated to Saint Joseph. The tower was only added in 1865. This church is one of the oldest churches in Tyrol dedicated to Saint Joseph. The interior is arranged like a Capuchin church. The church was extended in 1845.
The church is not open for visitors.

Parish Church Saint Joseph the Worker

Because the old church became too small for the population in Vilpian in 1900, the community planned to build a new church. Due to the difficult financial situation and World War II, the construction of the new church only began in 1949; the bare brickwork was concluded in 1950, and finally in 1955 the church was consecrated. It is a modern, austere sacred building. Over the main altar, there is a life-size crucifix dating from the 17th century. It is an item on loan from the Meran Civic Theatre and is the most important piece of art in the church. The renowned painter Franz Lenhart from Meran painted the two adoring angels on the façade and the monogram of Jesus above the round window over the entry. The bell tower was not realized at the beginning, due to financial reasons. Only in October 1996, was the new tower constructed within a short period of time.

    Forts & Castles
    Castle Untermontani (Ruin)
    Latsch/Laces, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

The castle Untermontani belonged in the 14th century to the counts of Annenberg. It still has interesting details like Zugbrückenanlage, the gate and a smallkennel. The castle Untermontani  lost over the years its importance and was abandoned to decay. At the beginning of the 19th century collapsed parts of the western curtain wall and the Palas, because of the flowing river Plima along here had undermined the embankment. In 1945, parts of the keep collapsed, so that the castle today completely ruinousist. Visits only from outside.

    Church at Monte Santa Caterina/Katharinaberg
    Schnals/Senales, Meran/Merano and environs

After the tight canyon at the entrance to the valley, the valley widens and you will see the chapel of the village of Monte S. Caterina/Katharinaberg on your right. The chapel is like a signpost for the village. Once upon a time, this rocky hill was crowned with the castle of the „Lords of Schnals“, which gave the valley its name. Not only the inhabitants, but also our guests enjoy life in the village: the mild climate, lots of sun, stillness, wonderful hiking routes with direct access to the Merano High Mountain Trail in the Texelgruppe Nature Park, as well as some picturesque views into the valley and over the mountains.

    Culture & Attractions
    Terento Kindergarten
    Terenten/Terento, Brixen/Bressanone and environs

Its successful scale, the distribution of its building volumes and its integration into the site unite the new building so harmoniously with the village structure that one would think it had been standing there since ever. Only upon second glance does one notice that the architecture is a reinterpretation of South Tyrolean residential construction forms ̶  without the Alpine decor. Pitched roofs atop solid plastered masonry with perforated facades and the construction raising from the ground, without a plinth, carry forward this architectural tradition. The building’s connecting components, made of glass and with carefully designed details, are thematic of our time; the woodwork, meanwhile, carries on the traditions of local carpenters and woodcarvers. All this results in a child-friendly environment, with an atmosphere that appears self-evident and a high comfort factor.

    Culture & Attractions
    Rodeneck Primary School
    Rodeneck/Rodengo, Brixen/Bressanone and environs

On the edge of the slope ending at Rodeneck Castle over the Rienz river, lies a white cubic building visible from afar. The three-story building houses a youth and workroom on the ground floor, and is accessed from the outside by a vast ramp. The entrance hall has a stunning view over the valley. The canteen is on this level and the classrooms are situated on the upper floors. The building, made of concrete, is roughly plastered on the outside and has evenly spaced large windows, their smooth, white frames calmly decorate the facade. Even the interior spaces have been kept purely white; only the red rubber flooring and the yellow tiled bathrooms add color to the school, which also has a self-contained kindergarten.
