A special principle: the whole family has always been passionately involved in the business. The Christanell butcher's shop is located in the heart of Naturno. The company can look back with pride on 120 years of history: founded in 1903 by great-grandfather Mathias, the business is now run by Stephan Christanell, his family and his siblings. The South Tyrolean Speck PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), which guarantees a particularly high level of quality, is a matter close to the heart: The bacon is matured for longer and has a more intense flavour.

As South Tyrol's traditional and largest fruit producing municipality, Lana is the ideal location for the collection and display of information regarding the history of fruit-growing Thus the South Tyrolean fruit-growing museum gives an interesting overview on the fruit-growing aspects of agricultural life.

The „Apple Museum" is located in the medieval mansion Larchgut and offers approximately 1,000 square metres of exhibition space where you can find a host of information about this aspect of South Tyrolean cultural history.

The Larchgut Mansion's medieval keep was mentioned for the first time in writing in the year 1301 and it is now a listed building. Since fruit-growing followed winegrowing and crop production, the oldest items on display relate to these topics. Among others you can see the oldest wine press in South Tyrol from the year 1570.

The reclamation of the marshlands of the Adige Valley in the 19th and 20th centuries was the basis for the boom in fruit-growing. The evolution of agriculture, rural customs and every day life of the 19th century are documented through many original tools and objects. In the barn of the estate you can also see antique means of transport, tools and machines that give you an idea of the hardships of a farmers life in the past.

    Alpine Guide Stefan Fassnauer
    Sterzing/Vipiteno and environs
    Mountain guide since 2023

At the age of 18, I decided to leave competitive sport behind me as a biathlete and so training to become a mountain and ski guide became my next mission in life. At the age of 26, I was able to fulfil this dream and have been able to call myself a state-certified mountain and ski guide ever since, just like my father.

In the beginning, it was mainly ski and alpine tours that captivated me. At the age of 5, I ventured on my first ski tour with my parents, and at the age of 10 I stood on the summit of the Ortler for the first time. After I gave up biathlon, I was allowed to take a look at the world of work as an office worker. Climbing then became my favourite leisure activity. This was mainly because climbing allowed me to clear my head, which for me at the time was the perfect balance to the often stressful office life.

I now find it difficult to decide on a favourite alpine discipline. Whether climbing in the Dolomites, ski touring in the snow-covered mountains of South Tyrol or mountaineering on the roofs of the highest mountains in the Alps - each of these alpine disciplines has its very own charm and makes my heart beat faster.

    St. Rupert’s Church
    Meran/Merano and environs

The church, mentioned as far back as 1332, with its flat ceiling was increased in height in the late Gothic period and lengthened by the chancel with ribbed vaults above short round pillars and pointed corbels. The church was rededicated in 1472. The small tower that was built from hewn stone at the same time as the chancel remained incomplete and was later finished in brick.

In 1900 the church was extensively renovated. There is a large painting on the façade at the top of which the earlier, lower gable can be seen. In addition there is a broad border with small bust portraits in quatrefoils. On the southern side is the sundial which bears the date 1537. Inside there are traces of gilded frescoes from the early 15th century. The winged shrine with ancient sculptures is of the Schnatterpeck school.

St. Rupert’s Church was most recently renovated in 2007/08, and the altar dedication took place on 21st September 2008.

    St. Peter's Parish Church
    Meran/Merano and environs

Popular wisdom says that the church square, which offers many beautiful views, was once home to one of the oldest baptisteries in the area. Today, the Parish Church stands on an even older site dating back to the pre-romanesque period (lombard-carolingian style) and is one of the rare examples of a cross-domed church with central nave and side naves.

In 1287 Count Meinhard II of Tyrol transferred the patronage to the Cistercian monastery of Stams in the Oberinntal valley. St. Peter is still under the pastoral care of the monastery today. Under Meinhard, the lombard-carolingian church underwent a thorough reconfiguration; further modifications were made in the Gothic period. The church is rich in precious Romanesque and Gothic frescoes. The southern side nave has an especially well-preserved half-length portrait of St. Paul dating back to the 11th century.

The Holy Cross Parish in Wiesen

The fi rst written testimony of the Holy Cross Parish in Wiesen is dated 1337. The Church is said to have been reconsecrated in 1434. The frescoes on the vaulted ceiling by Josef Renzler, dated 1841, are worthy of note. The first written testimony of the Holy Cross Parish in Wiesen is dated 1337. The Church is said to have been reconsecrated in 1434. Today's construction in granite blocks was built with the supervision of builder Adam Schaiter of Sterzing, who combined late gothic and Renaissance elements. In the XIX century, the Church was nevertheless deprived of the gothic elements. The frescoes on the vaulted ceiling by Josef Renzler, dated 1841, are worthy of note. They depict the adoration of the cross by the Emperor Eraclius and St. Cecilia. The altars date from the XVI century, but were rebuilt in 1824. The alterpieces were also realised by Josef Renzler in 1827. The gothic crucifixion dating from the first half of the XIII century is also very important.
