    The Evangelical Church
    Meran/Merano and environs

    The Evangelical Church and its parsonage, situated by the river Passirio and surrounded by a beautiful English garden, form a charming corner and a living reminder of the cosmopolitan Merano of the turn of the century. The church was designed by the Berlin architect Hans Vollmer, and built between 1883 and 1885. It has a longitudinal plan with a polygonal apse. Today the church is not only used for religious functions, but also hosts a variety of music concerts.

    The Church of St. John Nepomuk was built in the 17th century. It carries trains both the Renaissance and the Baroque and contains precious altars, statues and votive paintings, which recall the once flourishing pilgrimage here.

    The Church of Sacred Heart

    This Neo-Gothic Church was originally the chapel of the "Dame Inglesi" It was designed by Ferdinand Mungenast, and built in 1903. The longitudinal plan ends in an apse which is decorated with a striking mosaic of over three million pieces, in neo-Byzantine Ravenna style. It depicts Christ seated in majesty, flanked by Mary and Joseph an angels, with the hand of God, the Creator, above. In the lower part of the mosaic there is a row of six saints interspersed with palm trees.

    The Arcades

    The Arcades connect Piazza Duomo with Piazza del Grano. They were built, according to tradition, in the middle of the 13th century, in accordance with the wishes of Meinhard II, Count of Tyrol, as a center for merchants and craftsmen. Since the 14th century the Arcades have been divided into "The River Arcades", on the side nearest the river Passirio and "The Mountain Arcades" on the side nearest the mountain.

    The Church of Our Lady in Lajen/Laion
    The late Gothic church was mentioned already in 1147 for the first time. According to the legend the church stands on the foundations of a heathen victim place. Today's building was built in the 15th century. Gothic elements of the church are the ogival portals, the rosette window above the main entrance with the Gothic three passports and the dainty net ribbed vaulting inside. The high altar (at 1620) shows Jesus' birth, statues of Peter and Paulus as well as figures from the Life of the Virgin Mary. The painted windows on the left and on the right side of the high altar were donated from Lajen's nobility families in 1905. The remaining fittings are in the neo-Gothic style. The tower of Our Lady's Church is adorned on the northern side and has impressing frescos.

    Hobby anglers, who want to enjoy their holidays far from the noise of the city, will find ample opportunity for fishing trips in Lana and Val d'ultimo many tranquil lakes, streams, and rivers. The best fishing spots for anglers are at the S. Vigilio on the Schwarze Lacke lake and the lakes around Ulten.

    But don't forget: Fishing is permitted only with a current state permit for tourists and a day card. The license is obtained at the Tourist Office Lana and surroundings and is valid for ten years in all of Italy.

    Castle Mayenburg

    The vast ruined fortress of Mayenburg stands on land that shows evidence of prehistoric settlement on a long hilly ridge in Foiana. It was built by the Counts of Eppan and is first mentioned in the records in 1241. In 1650 Count Veit Benno Brandis took over the castle and extended it considerably.

    In 1922 the ruins were acquired and renovated by a family of physicians, the Auffingers. The imposing, closed complex still features sparse remnants of murals dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The strong keep and round dovecote tower above the castle well are worthy of note.

    Roman Bridge
    Meran/Merano and environs

    The Steinerner Steg or “Roman Bridge” is the oldest bridge over the River Passer and was was built in the 17th century. It is situated where the winter and summer promenades end, and where the Gilfpromenade begins. This, and replaced a medieval wooden structure that linked Obermais to the city centre. Its original function was to carry the drinking water pipeline from one side of the river to the other. The Steinerner Steg is often also erroneously called the “Roman Bridge”, probably on account of its apparently Roman/ancient construction method.

    Puccini Theatre

    The theatre was designed by the Munich architect Martin Dülfer and inaugurated in 1900. It is a wonderful germ of eclectic Munich "Jugendstil" architecture. Marble and stucco decorations embellish the inside and the outside ot the theatre. It is dedicated to the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini.

    Church of St. Oswald

    The Church of St. Oswald in Pawigl near Lana was built in the Middle Ages. The nave walls of the Church of St. Vigilius date from this time, which once marked the most northerly point of the diocese of Trento, and which was painted in the second half of the 14th century with important early Gothic frescoes that are still well preserved today. It was built in the 13th century and extensively renovated in 1876.

    Lanegg Abbey and the Church of the Holy Cross occupy an imposing position on the mountainside. Lanegg Abbey is the cradle and mother house of the branch of the Sisters of the German Order that was revived here in 1841 after dying out during the Reformation.

    In 1911/12, the Abbey was extended by the addition of the neo-Baroque-style Church. The altars and stations of the cross were produced in the workshop of Josef Obletter in Val Gardena.

    Braunsberg Castle

    The Masters of Braunsberg were first mentioned in the records in 1213; from 1492 in the possession of the Counts Trapp, latterly inherited by the Counts Strachwitz, who restored the castle; simple layout with a curtain wall, residential building, tower-like and chapel (St. Blasius).

    The castle towering high above the Gaulschlucht gorge is a landmark of Lana. It was the seat of the Lords of Braunsberg mentioned in 1213, belonged to the Trapp Counts Matsch from 1492 to 1969 until Braunsberg Castle passed into the inheritance of the Counts Strachwitz in 1969.  

    The small and simple complex, part of which fell into the Gaulschlucht gorge in 1510, consists of a curtain wall, residential building, tower-like outbuilding and the St. Blasius Chapel. It was first mentioned in a document in 1323, but is certainly older because of its Romanesque architectural style and was originally located outside the castle walls.

    Various stylistic periods can be found: The portal dates from the late Gothic period, the open pulpit from 1538, the crucifixion group and the figures of Saints Vigilius and Blasius from 1592 with frames from 1669 and the Baroque altar from 1690.

    The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited.

    A Reputable Mountain Institution: The San Vigilio Ski Club

    The Ski Club at San Vigilio has been running since 1948 and every year it organises with new energy and vigour the much loved Christmas ski course for children. The ski instructors and club members voluntarily give up their time and energy to make sure the Saturday ski course is a success and to organise the sporting events at the resort during the winter season.

    This small church near Völlan was built in 1705 by the Barons von Hausmann, who had a summer residence here.

    The Passer Promenade

    Named after the torrent that flows through the city, this promenade winds along the right bank of the Passer River, in the centre of Merano/Meran. There are two stretches, one between the Ponte della Posta and Ponte Teatro, the other that hence takes to the Ponte di Ferro.

    In the first part there are many artistic flower-beds, palms, ice-cream shops and cafes. Here you can admire the liberty architecture of the Kurhaus, whereas on the lower part of the promenade, surrounded by various historical buildings, you’ll find the artworks of the Human Figures project.

    The promenade is easily walkable with pushchairs, too.

    Chiesetta di San Valentino Church

    This little church is located in Maia Alta (Obermais), below Labers Castle and near the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. Because of its picturesque location surrounded by orchards and fields, it is a popular hiking destination. It is dedicated to St. Valentine, who was engaged as a messenger of faith in the region in the fifth century and was buried in the mortuary chapel of San Zeno (Zenoburg) Castle.

    Three of the original four town gates still exist. The gates took the name oft the valleys or the towns fhey faced: Val Venosta, Bolzano, Val Passiria and Val d'Ultimo. The Ultimo Gate was situated in what is today piazza Teatro. On both sides of the Passiria Gate it is still possible to see what was once the town wall, built towards the end of the 13th century.

    This modern church, which recalls the buildings of De Chirico, is located in Piazza Mazzini.     The church dates back to the 12th century, but probably its origins are even more remote. The Romanesque building and the Lombard-style bell tower have been subject to many changes. Inside, there is a unique cycle of frescos in Byzantine style dating from 1200-1220. On the ouside walls there are other, probably late 14th century, frescos. Masses (in Italian): Weekdays: 8:00 a.m
