Compatsch - Schlernhaus - Tierser Alpl - Compatsch
    Kastelruth/Castelrotto, Dolomites Region Seiser Alm

This route can be hiked either on a one-day or a multi-day tour.

The Schlern: emblem mountain of South Tyrol, gentle giant and hiking paradise. This tour leads straight over the Seiser Alm, ascends all the way up to the Tierser Alpl, surrounded by its impressive rocky formations, and then crosses over the Schlern plateau to arrive at destination - the “Castle in the Dolomites”: The Refuge Schlernhaus mountain hut – or rather, mountain huts, given that there are 4 of them alongside each other, all built between 1885 and 1908 , in an architectural style which merges seamlessly with the surrounding countryside. The interior decor is, for the main part, in its original condition and wakens a sense of mountaineering nostalgia and an atmosphere of sociable companionship, rounded off to perfection with traditional South Tyrolean dishes.

What better way to experience the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites and the surrounding mountains than on a two-day hut hike to the highlights in the holiday region Seiser Alm? The first stage of our tour leads to the Schlern, whose unmistakeable form is the emblem of South Tyrol. The following day we make our way to the privately-owned Refuge Tierser Alpl hut with its distinctive red roof and on to the Seiser Alm.

    Gleckspitze summit ski tour
    Ratschings/Racines, Sterzing/Vipiteno and environs

Ascent: First follow the forest road upwards over a few serpentines and then enter the Lazzachertal valley. Cross the first bridge and continue uphill on the left side of the valley. After about 6 km, turn left at the fork in the road. 400 m after the fork, at the first stream that comes from the left, leave the trail. Go up to the right of the stream into a plain. You can now clearly see the steep summit structure of the Gleckspitze. Always to the right of the stream channel, exactly in the direction of the summit, over a slope into a flattening of the terrain (2250 m). Continue straight on, then keep left into a flat bottom (2350 m). Continue through a hollow and up to the left onto a small shoulder (2460 m). Now diagonally right onto a ridge. Here is a possible ski depot. Straight on or left onto the ridge and over it to the right to the summit with a small cross. Descent as ascent.

! After heavy fresh snowfall, the path into the Lazzachertal valley is avalanche-prone!

Ascent: Follow the forest path flatly into the valley. The ascent is from the valley (1625 m) over a steep ridge directly to the alpine pasture Schluppesalm (1825 m). At the alp continue in a south-easterly direction.  To the left of this into a small saddle (2050 m). On the left edge into the valley and slightly to the left of steep terrain on a moderate incline to below the large summit slope (2300 m). This slope becomes steeper and steeper, is unstructured and can only be done in absolutely safe conditions. It is best to follow the left edge until you reach a small ledge at 2450 m diagonally to the right, very steep (40-45°). Continue steeply up to the ridge (2510 m). If not already further down, then here is a ski depot. Over the narrow ridge to the right to the summit with cross.

Descent as ascent. In the spring you can also ski down from the former Jaufenhaus to above the alpine pasture and cross into the valley.
