The clean air area in Ahrntal

Breathe the pollen-free mountain air

In the Ahrntal, particularly clean air ensures your wellbeing. Known as an area of clean air, they've found hardly any ozone, pollutants are way below legal limits and there's barely any pollen floating in the air. So, how is that possible? Well, a crucial aspect is the location. Tucked between 1,000 to 3,500 m, the valley is overlooked by over 80 three-thousand metre peaks, and the air quality is assuredly good. What's more, there's hardly any traffic passing through, thanks to the valley's end meeting Italy's northernmost mountains.

But that's not all. Even underground, the air is one of the cleanest you'll ever breathe. For instance, in the climate gallery Prettau, the air is so pure that people suffering from asthma or pollen allergies can start breathing normally. Recent studies have proven the positive effects of the gallery's microclimate in Prettau.

Water, too, contributes to the cleanness of water. With 120 drinking water springs, 35 mountain lakes and ten waterfalls, the landscape of the Ahrntal is shaped by water which adds a refreshing touch to the air we breathe.

Alpine Manifesto

The Alps are a unique habitat for people, animals and nature. To preserve this heritage, we must act responsibly. The Alpine Manifesto sums up in ten principles how to treat this precious landscape with respect and care. Let’s send a strong message together!

Sustainable Ahrntal/Valle Aurina

Nestled in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, the Ahrntal Valley impresses with its more than 80 three-thousand-meter peaks, 120 drinking water springs, 35 mountain lakes, 9 waterfalls and a unique healing gallery. A valley without through traffic, rich in the purest air, untouched nature and crystal-clear water. The establishment of the consortium "Zukunft Ahrntal" was a concrete step towards respectful treatment of nature, resources, traditions and the way of life in the valley. Local cycles and economic structures are promoted and further developed on the basis of socio-economic projects such as Taufrisch and Kleiner Marktplatz. Soft mobility and good, regular public transportation connections promote environmentally friendly transportation. The Ahrntal Valley was awarded the Sustainability Label South Tyrol for these measures – an important milestone on the road to a future fit for our grandchildren.

What can you do in the Ahrntal valley?

There is certainly no shortage of opportunities to enjoy the power of nature to the full here. And you experience this all the more intensely in the mountain spring. As soon as the snow melts on the over 80 high peaks, the many waterfalls in the Ahrntal valley are fed with meltwater and can no longer be ignored. The Wieser Werfa hike, which takes you through the biotop of the same name, unique moorland landscapes and mystical mountain lakes, puts you on the trail of water as a source of life. Experience water in a fun way on a ride on the Fly Line waterfall at the Reinbach waterfalls.

Follow the revitalising spring sunshine along the Ahrntal Sun Trail, which was once used as a smugglers' path on the border to the Zillertal Alps. Today, you hike through blooming meadows and past cosy alpine pastures that invite you to stop for a bite to eat and enjoy the view. The Mühlwald sunny side can also be explored in pleasant temperatures, especially in spring. Old farms, well-tended gardens and colourful meadows line your journey of discovery through this unique cultural landscape. You can inspire your family with legends about a lost treasure or the downfall of Walburg Castle on the Sagenweg trail in Ahrntal. This family-friendly hike leads through the flat valley floor of Sand in Taufers to the little church of St. Walburg.

There’s nothing like catching the first rays of summer up in the mountains. Take advantage of the Cable Cars FREE offer in all participating accommodations in Ahrntal and Sand in Taufers: from 18 May to 30 June, ride the Klausberg and Speikboden cable cars for free. With your complimentary mountain pass, you can also reach the Mindful Mountain Days – the event dedicated to yoga, wellbeing and mindful moments in nature.

The Klausberg lifts start operating on 18 May, Speikboden from 1 June.

The villages of the region await you with family-run shops, where local artisans and producers offer unique creations and homemade products.

Produced in the Ahrntal valley

Would you like a slice of spicy grey cheese? A hand-carved nativity scene? Or a bobbin lace quilt? You will find a wide range of local, high-quality foods and handcrafted articles for daily use and art in the Ahrntal valley, as in the rest of South Tyrol. Ahrntal valley farmers have dedicated themselves in particular to producing cheese. Grey cheese was even awarded the highest possible award “Presidio” by Slowfood and at the Travel Food Award the Ahrntal received the award "Best Food and Wine Event Italy 2023" with its gray cheese. Lots of producers sell straight from the farm where you can sample the treats and get to know the producers. Lace-making and woodcarving have an important meaning here. In the past, handicrafts secured the valley’s economic existence.

There has been a long tradition of making things yourself in South Tyrol. High quality and durability are the primary factors, which are achieved through the use of proprietary manufacturing techniques and high-quality raw materials. This allows us to create products that are only available here.

Field trips

Youth group and school trips - the Ahrntal is well known for its kind hosts and comfortable group houses. The valley offers a wide range of adventures and activities all year-round. From spring to autumn, young people take several bike rides, rafting tours, sled down Europe's longest summer toboggan run called "Klausberg Flitzer" or  try the Klausberg zipline. During the wintertime, the Ahrntal is a beaten destination for the many activities people of all ages can experience. On the toboggan runs and in the ski areas, sport and fun are under the spotlight. Especially if you visit the Snow & Fun Park Tamarix in Mühlwald/Selva dei Molini. Groups of skiing enthusiasts make turns on the slopes of Skiworld Ahrntal,  while beginners reinforce their skiing skills at one of the many professional courses.
