Experience sacred architecture
Omnipresent, diverse and rich in stories
There is no town or village in South Tyrol without a church: Heavily influenced by Christianity, the province has a high density of churches, chapels, monasteries and abbeys, the oldest of which date back to the early Christian period. Chapels were built as protection for travellers, hospices and Commenda for chivalric orders along much-frequented paths that served as a link between north and south in the early Middle Ages. In addition, there were monasteries in the countryside as well as larger churches and cathedrals in cities. Today, well over 250 churches have been preserved and are accessible to the public. You can visit these buildings, which are interesting from a cultural, artistic and art-historical perspective. They bear witness to the region’s eventful history.
