The villages in Brixen/Bressanone and environs

Nestled in a valley basin or settled on a plateau, slightly secluded or well visited: The places in and around Brixen have so much variety to offer. Find out here which one is right for your holiday.

What is there to see and do in Brixen and environs?

The region’s past as a central passageway between north and south has left a rich legacy. See for yourself at the Bishop's Palace in Brixen, Tyrol’s oldest city and the legacy of the powerful prince-bishops. Head to the artist town of Klausen/Chiusa to discover the spirit of Albrecht Dürer. Stroll through the alleys of the town, notice how the historical has been tastefully combined with the new. Here, high importance has been placed on preservation, e.g. at the cloister of Brixen with its extremely well-preserved Gothic ceiling frescoes or at the Festung Franzensfeste fortress featuring changing exhibitions in impressive spaces. If you want to escape the urban area, get out into nature thanks to the area’s close proximity to the mountains. Get in a cable car and discover Plose and Gitschberg hiking areas. Upon reaching the summit, a mesmerizing Dolomite panorama unfolds before you. Enjoy hiking or cycling routes that wind through alpine pastures and lead you to glittering lakes and mountaintops. If you visit the the Eisacktal valley in autumn, you’ll be treated to the smell of roasted chestnuts and home-style cooking at the local farmhouse taverns during Törggelen dinners to celebrate the harvest. Fortunately, you can enjoy excellent Eisacktal valley white wines all year round.

Enjoy “Törggelen” time

Local products from the farm and the workshop

Would you like a slice of spicy cheese made from goat’s milk? A soothing oil from mountain and stone pines? Or how about a pair of handmade traditional shoes? You will find a wide range of local, high-quality foods and handcrafted articles for daily use and art in Brixen, as in the rest of South Tyrol. Lots of producers sell straight from the farm where you can sample the treats and get to know the producers. In this way, you will experience moments of delicious flavour as well as gaining exciting insider knowledge about the cultivation and processing. With a bit of luck, you can even look over the shoulders of craftsmen at work as they create jewellery, wooden sculptures and baskets while strolling through the village or town. Hand craftsmanship has a long-standing tradition in South Tyrol. High quality and durability are the primary factors, which are achieved through the use of proprietary manufacturing techniques and high-quality raw materials. This allows us to create products that are only available here.

Shopping in the region

The nobility and the church brought to the construction of historical and cultural buildings, where trade and craft started to thrive. No matter if it's raining or snowing, while shopping in Brixen, stroll down the illuminated alleys, across the cathedral square, under the medieval arbors. Under the ancient arcades, discover the shops and boutiques, and take a special break in one of Brixen's cozy inns or fine wine bars. In Klausen you'll find local handicrafts, typical specialties and leather goods only few meters apart. At the foot of  the majestic monastery hill, you don't have to make any detours: rows of places to stop to dine are in the historic downtown, considered as one of the most beautiful in Italy.
