Protecting the Alps together

The Alps are a unique living environment – for nature, wildlife, and the people deeply connected to this region. To preserve this extraordinary landscape for future generations, we need shared awareness and mindful action. The Alpine Manifesto outlines ten clear principles for treating this valuable space with respect and sustainability. From gentle mobility to the protection of nature – even small actions can make a big difference. Add your signature and help make a meaningful impact.

1. We treat the Alpine flora and fauna with respect

As one of the largest contiguous cultural landscapes in Central Europe, the Alps provide a valuable habitat for over 30,000 animal species and 13,000 plant species – making them a true treasure trove of biodiversity. We approach this rich natural diversity with the utmost respect and care to ensure it is preserved for future generations.

2. We foster a respectful and considerate coexistence

To truly enjoy and appreciate the Alpine environment, it is essential to balance the needs of local communities and visitors. We promote a harmonious coexistence, respect local traditions, and embrace the opportunity to experience this unique region mindfully and with all our senses.

3. We leave no trace in the Alpine landscape

The Alps are a fragile ecosystem that must be protected. That’s why we take special care not to leave any waste behind. Due to the climatic conditions at high altitudes, decomposition processes are much slower. Some types of waste, such as plastic, do not decompose at all – they only break down into microplastics and remain in the environment indefinitely.

4. We value and make use of existing accommodation options

Being a guest in the Alps means enjoying warm hospitality and a high-quality range of lodging options. There are many types of accommodation to choose from. If we opt for an overnight stay outdoors, we do so knowing that camping is only allowed in designated areas.

5. We plan our tours carefully and prepare thoroughly

The Alpine terrain is diverse and often demanding, with steep slopes, narrow paths, and rocky sections. Careful preparation is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience and helps avoid unforeseen incidents. By planning our tours mindfully, checking the local weather forecast, and preparing ourselves physically and mentally, we create the best conditions for unforgettable moments in the Alps.

6. We move responsibly through the Alps and stick to paths, routes, and slopes

We make use of the well-maintained network of marked trails, ski slopes, and routes throughout the Alps. This not only helps protect nature but also ensures our own safety. We leave the landscape exactly as we found it – for the people who live here and for those who will come after us.

7. We respect the operating hours and rules of ski resorts and cross-country trails

The Alps offer rest and relaxation year-round – and in winter, they captivate us with their unique snow sports opportunities. To ensure that everyone can enjoy the natural and recreational experience safely, we follow the operating hours and rules of ski resorts and cross-country tracks. These measures support not only our safety but also environmental protection and harmonious coexistence. That way, we can all enjoy the magic of winter without worry.

8. We buy local and support regional economies

We value the diversity of regional products and, by purchasing them, help strengthen the Alpine economy. Farmers play a particularly important role: they preserve the Alpine cultural landscape and ensure the production of high-quality food. By supporting their work and enjoying local specialties, we help maintain regional value chains and preserve the Alpine landscape for future generations.

9. We carry the beautiful memories of the Alps in our hearts

The Alps inspire and move us. They are a constant source of inspiration and tranquility. Instead of experiencing their beauty only through the lens of a smartphone, we engage with them using all our senses. We keep the memories of the Alps in our hearts and make sure our presence doesn’t interfere with the personal experiences of others.

10. We travel sustainably and use eco-friendly mobility options on site

We reduce our CO₂ footprint by choosing sustainable means of transport, such as public transportation or carpooling. This not only benefits the environment, but also makes our journey more relaxed: without traffic or the stress of parking, the holiday starts along the way, and we can enjoy the Alpine landscape more consciously. At the same time, we support eco-friendly infrastructure and help preserve the environment for future generations.
