Where pleasure has its roots

In South Tyrol, there are places that capture you the moment you experience them. The vineyards are among them.

Imagine you’re standing right among the vines, a glass of wine in your hand, feeling the warm sun on your skin and tasting the wine exactly where it was grown. Here, winegrowing families have been tending their vines for generations. With a fine sense for nature, soil and the seasons, they bring their knowledge into every single wine.

This is how a wine full of character comes to life, shaped by the interplay of landscape and craftsmanship. An experience that stays with you long after.

Guided wine experiences

Some moments just happen, while others are sought out in order to savour them intensely. Guided wine experiences in South Tyrol are one of those.

Our winemakers will guide you through Italy's smallest wine-growing region. You will discover a landscape where every vineyard and grape has a story to tell, and learn what makes Alto Adige's terroir so unique. Whether you're travelling on foot or by bike, you'll be passing through vineyards on guided cycling or hiking tours. You will discover how much manual labour goes into producing every bottle of wine, how the grapes develop their unique aromas here, and how these aromas are transformed into wines full of character. Then there are the stunning views – of villages, castles and mountains. Sometimes, music accompanies your wine experience – at concerts or tastings held in the middle of the vineyards.

The special thing about these stops is often the unexpected – a brief encounter or anecdote that reveals more than any sign ever could. You realise how closely connected everything is here – the landscape, the people and the wine.

Hiking between cellars and vineyards

Alto Adige wine trails lead you through the sun-kissed wine-growing regions, past small wineries and old farmsteads. As you walk through the vineyard, you can sample wine at every turn. The Kurtatsch-Margreid-Kurtinig Wine Trail runs along the South Tyrolean Wine Route and introduces you to the wide range of grape varieties found in this region. The Terlano Wine Trail tells of the long white wine tradition. In Tramin, you can hike along the Gewürztraminer Trail, which takes you through the region where this aromatic grape variety originated. The Pinot Noir Trail takes you through vineyards in Neumarkt/Egna and Montan that are known for this elegant red wine. These trails offer a combination of exercise, culture and wine education.

Moments of pleasure with Alto Adige wine

A classic South Tyrolean Marende, a plate of tagliolini with fresh herbs or a refined composition in the upscale restaurants - South Tyrol's cuisine is versatile. All the dishes have one thing in common – carefully selected ingredients and meticulous preparation. And, of course, a glass of wine that not only goes well with the food, but also enhances the flavour experience.

Each dish is accompanied by DOC wines that have been carefully selected to complement it. They are served with knowledge, charm and a first-hand recommendation. Hospitality establishments that show particular commitment to Alto Adige wine and its cultural roots are honoured with the Alto Adige Wine Culture Award. Passion, expertise and a clear focus on the Alto Adige wines are assessed. Since 2020, this also applies to chalets that are passionate about their wine list.

Whether you are sitting in a stylish restaurant, a cosy vinotheque or one of the countless alpine lodges - in South Tyrol you will meet hosts who love what they serve.

Modern accents between old walls

Kurtatsch winery

The Kurtatsch winery features an architectural design, with a dolomite stone façade overlooking the wine route. Designed by architects Dell'Agnolo and Kelderer, the façade is reminiscent of the impressive "Millawand" rock face, on which the village of Kurtatsch is perched. The inviting wine shop, the Dolomite cellar and innovative terroir trail are also well worth a visit.

Bolzano/Bozen winery

This architectural masterpiece, Italy's  first climate-controlled winery, is harmoniously integrated into the hillside. It stands for traditional wine culture, sustainability and design. The modern building is particularly fascinating at night – the bronze façade, inspired by a vine leaf, seems to glow after sunset.

Kellerei Bozen

Tramin winery

At the entrance to the wine village of Tramin, the winery building is modern and futuristic and can be seen from far afield. The green steel construction symbolises the connection between the vineyard and the wine cellar. Inside, wood, glass, and bold colours create a sense of airy transparency and elegance. The wine shop and tasting room extend like open arms into the landscape.

Pfitscher winery

Sustainability in harmony with nature — the Pfitscher winery in Montan is setting new standards. As Italy's first climate-certified winery, recognised in 2012, the environmentally friendly building blends in carefully with the vineyards and lets nature take the lead. In the tasting room, a glass front opens up a breathtaking panorama of the Südtiroler Unterland/Bassa Atesina.

Kaltern/Caldaro winery

The wine centre's simple architectural elegance welcomes you at the entrance to Kaltern/Caldaro. Behind the glass façade with its vine leaf design, the history of the farms, wineries and squares in the wine-making village of Kaltern/Caldaro are brought to life. This is a must for anyone looking to experience Alto Adige wine culture!

Manincor winery

From outside, only the wooden pavilion housing the wine shop and the glass 'eye' of the tasting room, which offers views of Leuchtenburg Castle and Lake Caldaro, are visible. The winery itself was actually built underground in the vineyard. This architectural masterpiece provides a natural climate, ideal for gently processing the grapes from biodynamic cultivation.
