Spring break in the Dolomite valleys of Lüsen/Luson and Villnöss/Funes

Hiking, enjoying yourself, recharging your batteries – your spring in tune with nature

In the valleys of the Odles Slow Dolomites, time seems to slow down a little in spring. When the first flowers bloom in the meadows, the forests glow in soft green and the Dolomite peaks stand clear in the bright light, you feel the calm especially intensely. Lush alpine pastures, gently flowing streams and striking rock formations shape a landscape that lets you breathe deeply.

In Lüsen and Villnöss you lace up your hiking boots. You walk along trails and through light forests, accompanied by birdsong and the scent of fresh herbs. Life returns to the alpine huts. Hosts open their doors and serve simple dishes made with regional ingredients. A glass of South Tyrolean wine or homemade juice pairs perfectly while you enjoy the view of the Geisler/Odle peaks.

A spring holiday in South Tyrol shows you how good it feels when nature begins anew. In the homeland of Reinhold Messner, an authentic cultural landscape awaits you, carefully preserved. Here you find paths that lead you, step by step, back to yourself.

Sustainable Odles Slow Dolomites

Nestled between the towering walls of the Dolomites lie two valleys where you can find true peace. In Lüsen and Villnöss, you stay far away from the noise. There are only a few lifts — yet you discover untouched landscapes and a farming culture woven into everyday life.

Both valleys commit to sustainable development through mindful use of natural resources. For this dedication, they have been awarded the Nachhaltigkeitslabel Stufe 3 —South Tyrol’s highest sustainability honor.

The valleys generate electricity from their own hydropower. District heating plants use damaged wood harvested from the surrounding forests. On the alpine pastures, glass fiber cables replace noisy, polluting diesel generators. And in terms of mobility, well-timed connections ensure environmentally friendly travel for guests and locals alike.

By preserving traditional structures and ways of life, it becomes clear that respect here extends not only to nature, but also to the people and their culture. As South Tyrol’s first Slow Food Destination, Villnöss stands for responsible farming and the safeguarding of traditional processing methods. Lüsen shares this path. Here too, family farms and dedicated individuals are growing together to become a Slow Food Travel Destination.

Dolorama: Framing the Dolomites

The Dolorama trail crosses 60 kilometres and 2,365 metres of elevation in four stages – from the Rodeneck-Luson pastures to Lajen/Laion. Meadows, rocky paths and ever-changing views set the pace, with the Peitlerkofel, Geisler peaks, Schlern and Langkofel always in sight.

Calm instead of hustle and bustle, time instead of haste

In the foreground, a picturesque hamlet with a small church; behind it, the striking peaks of the Geisler: this view of Villnöss is probably one of the most famous photo motifs of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. The peaceful valley is also known as the birthplace of extreme mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner.

The region is committed to sustainable tourism. The valley, with its fascinating Dolomite backdrop, is hardly built up. Here and there is a mountain farm or a church such as the parish church of St Peter and Paul. The unspoilt natural landscape of the Puez-Geisler Nature Park is best explored on foot, by climbing rope or by bike.  The architecturally unique Puez-Geisler Nature Park House is well worth seeing. Here you can learn all about the origins, flora and fauna of the Dolomites. The Teis Mineral Museum, on the other hand, is all about the locally occurring agates, amethysts and rock crystals.

Villages await you with family-run shops, artisans and local producers eager to delight you with their creations and homemade products.

South Tyrol’s first Slow Food Travel destination

Hardly any traffic, no big hotels – instead, a close-knit community committed to protecting what makes their valley unique. In Villnöss, people work together to preserve the natural character of their home. With the Slow Food label, they have made their vision visible. Founded in 1986 to protect local food traditions, the Slow Food movement has become a global symbol for sustainability.

The Odles Slow Dolomites region is South Tyrol’s first Slow Food Travel destination. Life here is rooted in nature. Mountain huts, restaurants, and hotels focus on local ingredients and actively support nearby producers. Two Slow Food Presidia – projects that protect traditional foods and heritage breeds – call the valley home: the Villnösser Brillenschaf sheep and the hardy Tyrolean Grey cattle. Years ago, the valley chose the path of gentle tourism – today it forms the foundation for a sustainable future.

Local, unique and high-quality

How about a slice of tangy mountain cheese? Tender beef from the Graues Geisler cattle? South Tyrolean honey with a quality seal? Or a warm wool blanket made from natural fibres? Just like in the rest of South Tyrol, you’ll find a wide range of local, high-quality foods and handmade everyday items and artworks in the Odles region.

Many producers sell their goods in small local shops or directly from their farms – where you can taste their specialities and meet the people behind them. It’s a chance to enjoy not only one-of-a-kind flavours, but also insights into how things are grown and made. And if you’re lucky, a walk through the village might lead you to artisans crafting jewellery, wooden sculptures, or woven baskets – right before your eyes.
