Slow days in Lüsen/Luson and Villnöss/Val di Funes

Hiking, tasting, celebrating – your autumn in tune with nature

In the valleys of the Odles Slow Dolomites, time moves a little more slowly. Among wide alpine meadows, quiet forests and towering Dolomite peaks, you’ll find a place that brings calm and restores strength. Life here follows the rhythm of nature, mindfulness and real encounters. When the forests of Lüsen Villnöss turn golden, a colourful season begins. Scenic hikes, easy-going bike tours, rustic huts and local festivals invite you to enjoy life outdoors. If you come to South Tyrol for your holiday and visit the homeland of mountaineering legends Günther and Reinhold Messner, you’ll discover unspoilt nature – and a deep local pride in place and production.

Four reasons to enjoy your autumn holiday in Lüsen and Villnöss

Golden forests, striking peaks, local flavours, and rich culture – the quiet season invites you to slow down and take it all in

When the mountains glow

Autumn paints the landscape in vibrant colours, with the golden yellow of the larches adding glowing highlights. Its most striking spectacle – the 'Enrosadira’ – appears in the evening: as the valley fades into shadow, the Dolomites light up in shades of orange, pink, red, and violet until the sun sets – a moment that invites you to pause and take it all in

Flavours of the saison

When the mountains glow with autumn light, it’s time to slow down and savour the season. Along quiet trails, you’ll find not only peace in nature, but also the flavours of the harvest: freshly picked apples, tangy mountain cheese, homemade speck, and fine South Tyrolean wines. On guided Slow Food Travel tours, you can visit local farms and taste their handmade specialities right where they’re made.

Where nature tells its story

The Nature Park Visitor Centre in St. Magdalena/S. Maddalena offers plenty to discover – from a mountain cinema and a walkable aerial photo to hands-on nature experiences. You can also watch a film by extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner, who grew up in Villnöss, and follow his story. A visit to the mountain village of Teis/Tiso is well worth the trip: its mineral museum is home to the famous ‘Tiso spheres’.

Dolorama: Framing the Dolomites

The Dolorama trail crosses 60 kilometres and 2,365 metres of elevation in four stages – from the Rodeneck-Luson pastures to Lajen/Laion. Meadows, rocky paths and ever-changing views set the pace, with the Peitlerkofel, Geisler peaks, Schlern and Langkofel always in sight.

Stillness over stress, time over haste

In the foreground, a small chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk watches over a quiet hamlet. Behind it, the jagged peaks of the Geisler mountains rise – part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a peaceful valley where time slows down – and where mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner was born.

The unspoilt landscape of the Puez-Odle Nature Park is best explored on foot or by bike. At the strikingly designed Nature Park Visitor Centre, you’ll learn about the origins, plants and wildlife of the Dolomites. In nearby Teis, the Mineral Museum showcases local agates, amethysts and rock crystals. For families, the panoramic trail across the Luson alpine pastures is a highlight – a day where nature, stories and wide-open views come together.

In the villages, family-run shops, local craftspeople and producers welcome you with handmade creations and regional specialities.

South Tyrol’s first Slow Food Travel destination

Hardly any traffic, no big hotels – instead, a close-knit community committed to protecting what makes their valley unique. In Villnöss, people work together to preserve the natural character of their home. With the Slow Food label, they have made their vision visible. Founded in 1986 to protect local food traditions, the Slow Food movement has become a global symbol for sustainability.

The Odles Slow Dolomites region is South Tyrol’s first Slow Food Travel destination. Life here is rooted in nature. Mountain huts, restaurants, and hotels focus on local ingredients and actively support nearby producers. Two Slow Food Presidia – projects that protect traditional foods and heritage breeds – call the valley home: the Villnösser Brillenschaf sheep and the hardy Tyrolean Grey cattle.

Local, unique and high-quality

How about a slice of tangy mountain cheese? Tender beef from the Graues Geisler cattle? South Tyrolean honey with a quality seal? Or a warm wool blanket made from natural fibres? Just like in the rest of South Tyrol, you’ll find a wide range of local, high-quality foods and handmade everyday items and artworks in the Odles region.

Many producers sell their goods in small local shops or directly from their farms – where you can taste their specialities and meet the people behind them. It’s a chance to enjoy not only one-of-a-kind flavours, but also insights into how things are grown and made. And if you’re lucky, a walk through the village might lead you to artisans crafting jewellery, wooden sculptures, or woven baskets – right before your eyes.
