Unusual peaks, geologically unique: in 2009, the nine sub-areas of the Dolomites were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What makes this mountain world incredibly special When you look at the majestic rock formations of the Dolomites, you’re suddenly travelling into the past. About 30 million years ago, the European and African tectonic plates collided, and the Dolomites were uplifted from the sea.
