A natural work of art

Unusual peaks, geologicallz unique: the nine sub-areas of the Dolomites were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. What makes them stand out in this mountain world

Unusual peaks, geologically unique: in 2009, the nine sub-areas of the Dolomites were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What makes this mountain world incredibly special When you look at the majestic rock formations of the Dolomites, you’re suddenly travelling into the past. About 30 million years ago, the European and African tectonic plates collided, and the Dolomites were uplifted from the sea. Its rock layers, mainly composed of the dolomite mineral, make it so geologically special.

Welcome to a World Heritage territory

Out of nine, four of the Dolomites sub-areas are located here in South Tyrol. You can admire the Dolomites astonishing peaks in the Nature Parks Three Peaks, Fanes-Sennes-Braies, Sciliar-Rosengarten, Puez-Odle and in the GeoParc Bletterbach.

A worth knowing time travel

In our Nature Park Visitor Centers, you will learn how the Dolomites have become what they are.

Did you know that 270 million years ago, the Dolomites were still part of a tropical sea as reefs and atolls? It was only with the collision between the African and European Earth plates that the interconnected rock formations had been formed. At the Dolomites UNESCO Infopoint Villnöß you will get to know the history of the formation of the Dolomites in time-lapse and learn where the traces of their maritime past can still be seen today.

For an expert view at the flora and fauna of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site, visit the 3 Peaks Nature Park visitor center in Toblach/Dobbiaco. And at the GEOPARC Bletterbach in Aldein/Aldino you’ll learn and be amazed. You’ll find traces of dinosaurs, fossilized fish, shells and prehistoric plants and learn all about the formation of rocks. By the way, the visitor center is the ideal starting point for a hike through the Bletterbach Gorge, also called the Grand Canyon of South Tyrol.
