Sacred Heart Sunday in Prato allo Stelvio On the third Sunday after Pentecost every year, fires of the Sacred Heart are lit on the high peaks throughout South Tyrol and in particularly spectacular fashion around Prato allo Stelvio/Prad am Stilfserjoch. The fires, which are visible at great distances, involve groups of young people and adults, who take considerable trouble to re-enact this centuries-old custom each year, attracting numerous tourists and curious onlookers. The tradition of the mountain fires actually dates back to pre-Christian times but in 1796, by the time Napoleon's army had reached the Alps, the light of the fires was turned into the Sacred Heart alliance. When faced with the threat of war, the Tyrolean parliament decided to entrust the country to the care of the most holy heart of Jesus in the quest for Divine redemption.

On Sunday at 9.30 a.m. the Holy Mass will be celebrated in the parish church of S. Cristina, with musical accompaniment from the church choir and orchestra of S. Cristina. Followed by the Sacred Heart of Jesus procession through the village with participants in the traditional costumes of Val Gardena.

Beacons across the mountains. Even today, in early summer the mountain tops are ablaze with beacons to commemorate a solemn religious bond entered into by the Tyroleans in a time of emergency. The refuge lights a Sacred Heart fire at the Rittner Horn around 8.30 p.m., dinner on reservation tel. +39 0471 1550602. In 1511 the Habsburg Emperor Maximilian I granted the Tyroleans special privileges. As part of the so-called “Landlibell” agreement the principle was established that in times of war the Tyroleans would not have to involve themselves beyond their regional borders. In return they were to be responsible for their homeland’s own defence. As the Napoleonic troops advanced closer and closer to Tyrol from northern Italy in 1796 the province prepared for war. The Tyrolean Landstände or Estates General – representatives of the nobility, the clergy, middle classes and peasants – assembled at a congress in Bolzano/Bozen in order to confer on a plan of action. Once all measures had been decided on Abbot Sebastian Stöckl of Stams suggested entrusting the province to the protection of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and so obtain divine help. On 1st June 1796 the solemn promise was made to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart henceforth each year with a ceremonious Mass. The bond was first acknowledged by the lighting of beacons on the mountains 80 years later.

On June 29, 2025 the cable car Kronplatz 2000 is open for a very special night - the "Sacred Heart Night" at the summit of Kronplatz.
Be there and experience a beautiful view of the adjacent mountain world during a picturesque sunset over the main ridge of the Alps and the Dolomites. Once the sun has set, a spectacular spectacle awaits you: fires of the Sacred Heart are lit on the surrounding peaks, illuminating the sky over the whole South Tyrol and giving it a magical atmosphere.
Lighting fires around the summer solstice has its origins in ancient times. The custom of solstice and St. John's fires has been documented since the 12th century. In the 18th century, however, the custom was reinterpreted: in 1796, the Tyrolean estates vowed to entrust the land to the "Sacred Heart of Jesus" to counter the imminent danger posed by Napoleon's invasion. Since then, this promise has been commemorated every year by lighting fires.
But this is not all: those interested in culture have the opportunity to visit the two museums at Kronplatz. Both the MMM Corones and the LUMEN Museum open their doors on this evening.

Bacteria, microorganisms, plant, fungus, and animal species coexist with humans in a delicate layer of soil, water, and air. We are connected through food streams. Sustained only by the energy of the sun, the Earth system behaves like a single organism, striving to regenerate and sustain itself and life (Gaia Theory, James Lovelock/Lynn Margulis). Awareness of the delicate and fragile fabric of life leads to the astonishing realization that the Earth as a whole — the ecosystem itself, with its physical, chemical, and biological components — is resilient and enduring through change, decay, and emergence. It continually regulates itself anew. Life goes on and ultimately survives us humans. Our human struggle lies in attempting to shape everything according to our own ideas through intervention. Yet our existence is actually owed to the Earth's biological diversity. If we wish to preserve the web of life to which we belong, we must restrain ourselves and observe the dynamic structure in its ability to self-heal, better understand it, and support it. In its fragile delicacy, the fabric of life is filled with beauty. Hanna Battisti is an artist and lecturer in art didactics at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. In her art, she primarily uses photography, a medium she learned from Rupert Larl at the Fotoforum West in Innsbruck in the 1990s. Since her time abroad in Nepal, Tibet, and China, she has practiced the art of Far Eastern ink painting. She has been exhibiting her works continuously at home and abroad since 1997, most recently FUTURO FRAGILE, 2024 in Innsbruck. She has published several books, most recently NATURA VIVA, ArcaEdizioni 2020. Since 2008, she has been a member of the South Tyrolean Artists' Association.

Summer Classics: Classic concert with "QuinTirol" in the Culture House in Seis am Schlern. QuinTirol is the collaboration of five passionate musicians from North, South, and East Tyrol. Five individuals with different personalities and musical backgrounds come together, enriching their music with a variety of inspirations and ideas. Having studied at music universities and conservatories in Bolzano, Trento, Innsbruck, Vienna, Munich, Trossingen, Paris, and London, the five wind players have performed and continue to perform in renowned orchestras such as the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra Innsbruck, the Haydn Orchestra Bolzano-Trento, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, the Jeunesses Musicales World Youth Orchestra, the Munich and Vienna Chamber Orchestras, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and many more. In 2017, they decided to form a classical woodwind quintet. With its extensive repertoire, this ensemble can be seen as the wind counterpart to the string quartet. Just like their instruments – flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon – the pieces performed by QuinTirol are diverse and multifaceted. They present refined and virtuosic classical music, warm and expressive romantic works, as well as fresh and innovative modern compositions – all brought to life with nothing but air! These five unique musical personalities engage in a dynamic interplay, sometimes leading, sometimes responding, but always playing together as an "ensemble." Playful exercises improve riding skills, balance, and braking techniques, while obstacle courses and small jumps boost confidence. The training is adventurous and fun, making it the perfect way to spark a love for cycling in nature, while learning how to ride safely. Bikes can be rented at the rentals. In the small workshop in the centre of Ortisei, pebbles, moss, seeds, wood, leaves, pinecones, and other natural materials are used to build small works of art together with the children. Thanks to this workshop the creations can be taken home and remind even after the holidays what great things can be made with such simple materials and a little imagination.

A hiking adventure to discover South Tyrol's mountains and get to know this unique, enchanting, panoramic world better. Limited number of participants.

From Cavareno we come to Salter and then through woods and meadows into the gorge of the hermit St Romedius with the monastery of the same name. We climb 130 steps up to the main chapel. We leave the monastery, hike uphill and reach the plateau of Lago di Coredo, where we stop for lunch. From here we descend to San Zeno, where the bus picks us up again. Meeting point at 9:00 AM at the La Villa Tourist Office for a scenic road bike ride towards Pederü, in the municipality of San Vigilio di Marebbe (approx. 70 km). The ride will be accompanied by local guides and ambassadors, including Luca Pescollderungg, Spartan Race World Champion. Participation is free and no registration is required. Important: This is not an organized cycling event, but a casual ride. Each participant rides under their own responsibility and must follow the road traffic rules.
