Stilfs/Stelvio, Vinschgau/Val Venosta
Every two years during carnival season, one of the most original carnival parades in the country takes place in Stilfs: the “Pfluagziachn.” This custom features an "Arlpflug" (a traditional plough), which was still occasionally used as a potato hiller in the 20th century, being pulled through the village by the “Schimmel” (a white horse) and six “Öchslen” (little oxen).
A wide variety of characters in unusual costumes take part, performing a complex improvised “mock battle” between opposing groups from the village. Conflicts between young and old, men and women, locals and nomads, farmers and farmhands, performers and spectators are parodied in these lively exchanges. Traditionally, the female roles are also played by men.
The Pfluagziachn of Stilfs traces its roots back to an old rural carnival tradition. Noise-making rituals to drive out winter are typical throughout the Vinschgau region, but the Pfluagziachn in Stilfs stands out due to its comedic nature. It’s a unique custom—a kind of interactive street parade from ancient times, a rural commedia that, in the process, brings a largely vanished traditional world back to life.
