The next International Museum Day in South Tyrol will be held on Sunday, 19 May 2024. The event includes a special themed free admission programme or an open day at numerous museums, collections and exhibition venues in South Tyrol. Founded in 1977, International Museum Day is promoted worldwide by ICOM in order to enhance the social and cultural role and diversity of museums among a wide public. Internationally it is linked to the date of 18 May, but in the province of Bolzano, as in some other European countries, it takes place on the Sunday closest to this date to facilitate participation.

On Sunday 19, May, a horse competition will take place at the Gfreinhof riding stable in Hafling. Participation is reserved for club members, but they look forward to welcoming a large audience. Food and drink will be provided on site by the Hafling breeding and riding club

International Museum Day and Plant Exchange Market On 19 May, not only is admission to the museum free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but cuttings and seeds can also be exchanged easily and free of charge at the open-air museum. There is no minimum number of plants to bring: everyone swaps and exchanges. We are especially looking forward to local varieties that have been propagated for years in the same home or garden. And anyone who wants to drop by but has nothing to swap is welcome!

For the first time, the Bücherwelten exhibition is coming to Museum Ladin. The focus of this year's edition of Bücherwelten "Bildhaft gesagt” (pictorially told) draws attention to a special kind of bookmaking: in many books, the image is not simply a visual complement to the text, but image and text form an inseparable unit in the communication of factual, scientific or narrative content. On this theme, the Museum Ladin Ciastel de Tor will be showing a selection of award-winning works from 2023, new books for children and young people, a Bookstart corner and a selection of Ladin books.

Primary and secondary school children from Val Gardena participated in the Giro d'Italia drawing competition. A jury selected the 30 most beautiful, creative and original drawings. The 30 winning pictures will be exhibited on the town hall square of S. Cristina.

03 May - 09 June 2024 It is not an easy topic, but it is all the more important: the group of works ‘Drawing against forgetting’ by Austrian artist Manfred Bockelmann shows charcoal portraits of children and young people who were victims of National Socialist terror. With this series, Bockelmann wants to ‘bring the children back from the darkness’. He succeeds in doing so in a haunting way. The exhibition takes place in the building of ‘Emmas Bistro’ and marks the beginning of the series of events to mark the anniversary. Ready to take a trip into the past? 280 million years ago, a supervolcano dominated the center of the present-day Trentino-Alto Adige region. Mighty porphyry deposits still testify to its activity, while other rock layers interspersed tell of periods of calm, during which plants and animals settled. Some of them left deep traces. At Tholerhof, both young and old, have the opportunity to gain their first riding experiences and get a feel for sitting in the saddle of these fascinating and powerful Haflinger horses and Shetland ponies. After riding, children can help with grooming and taking care of the horses. For more experienced riders, Tholerhof offers great rides in the forest around Aschbach. The special exhibition at Taufers Castle deals with the medieval theme of "popular belief", which combines religious aspects with superstition. Curated by Marie Rubner, it can be seen from March 29 to November 3, 2024.
The exhibition shows a view of the world that was influential until the Enlightenment and is still influential today. It does not judge, but provides insights into religious customs, rituals and the belief in otherworldly powers.
Popular belief sought to harness otherworldly powers in order to achieve safety, health and salvation.
The exhibition presents texts, exhibits and images, including unicorns, basilisks and thinkers.
Although it does not draw any conclusions, the exhibition opens our eyes to the importance of popular beliefs in society. It also shows how the focus on popular belief affects historical conflicts of faith.
It becomes clear that popular belief filled gaps in the Christian understanding of faith by turning to powers beyond. At the same time, the Catholic understanding of faith opposed pagan cults with sacramental alternatives.
A visit to the exhibition can reveal further insights and invites you to visit several times.
