The Villanders mine in the Eisack Valley, with a wide view of the Dolomites, was one of the most important mining areas in Tyrol in the Middle Ages. At that time, silver, galena, copper and much more were mined. The Villanders Culture and Museum Association has carefully restored the mine in recent years. It is now one of the few mines in South Tyrol that is open to visitors. Guided tours only from April to October on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 and 14:30, Sundays at 10:30 (duration approx. 1.5 h) In July & August additionally on Wednesdays at 10:30 (duration approx. 2 h). IMPORTANT: arrive at the mine at least 10 minutes in advance! Individual special tours are available all year round on request. All prices can be found on the mine's website.

For a long time it was very difficult to reach Terenten from the valley. For hundreds of years the village people had to look after themselves. The farmers and craftsmen provided food and clothes. Almost every farm had its own mill. However, only few of them are still fully functional. The educational mills path leads along Ternerbach River. During a 1,5 hour hike you walk past 7 renovated corn mills, some of which are up to 500 years old. This is where farmers used to grain corn into fine flour, and sometimes still do. During the summer months one mill is open to the public every Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No registration required.

On this easy hike around the so-called sunny village of Terenten, you will discover cultural highlights such as the earth pyramids, the mills or the small St. Margareth chapel and learn many a legendary story. The first stop takes you to the earth pyramids, a natural spectacle that will amaze you with its unique formations. Then visit the mills, which are also the heart of the local culture. Here you will witness the old craftsmanship and listen to the stories of times gone by. The easy hike, which also offers impressive panoramic views, continues to Margen. There you can visit the St. Margareth Chapel. The little church from the 12th century was built on a hill surrounded by nature. After a short breather and picnic break, the tour leads back to the starting point via the biotope. The mountain pine not only grows in the Sarntal Valley, in the valley of the mountain pines, but also on the acidic silicate soils of the Villanderer Alm. The power of this mountain plant is enormous. The soothing and fragrant oil is suitable for relaxing baths, infusions and wraps or as an additive in scrubs. In the fragrance lamp, the scent helps to improve the room climate. On Mondays there is a show firing. This gives anyone interested an insight into how the mountain pine is processed into oil.

We will meet up in the centre of Spinges and start our hike to the Opera 24 bunker. On our way there, we will have the chance to learn intriguing details about the builder of the Holy Sepulchre Chapel (1685) and the historical and artistic heritage of the local parish church and its small museum. We will also find out about the way of life in an 18th century farmer’s parlour, and why 400 people were burnt alive in a local farmhouse. The highest point of our hike is a bunker in Mussolini’s Alpine Wall, where we will learn about its history before enjoying a picnic on site or stopping over at a farmer’s inn in Spinges. In the event of adverse weather, we will skip the hike. You will still have the opportunity to reach the bunker by car and enjoy a stopover at a farmer’s inn in Spinges after our bunker tour. This excursion is a great opportunity to learn all about the life of mountain farmers. After a one-hour walk to the farm, you can try some freshly baked typical farmer’s bread straight from the old stone oven. The hike will then resume and lead you to the mills’ valley in Terenten, where you can see a collection of ancient grain mills as well as the exciting earth pyramids. You will also get the chance to visit one of the mills that is still in operation. The path is not suitable for prams.
