This easy and nice winter hike along the Sissi Promenade in Karersee | Carezza takes winter hikers in the footsteps of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sissi. The path, named after her, was one of her favorite walking routes. At the beginning of the tour, you pass the historic Grand Hotel Carezza, where the Empress resided during her stays. The route then leads past old farms through a picturesque winter landscape offering breathtaking views of the Latemar and ends at the Sissi Monument, which was erected in her honor.

This themed trail starts in the village center of Selva, behind the Ski School. It is a journey through the history of skiing in Val Gardena, from the beginnings of Alpine skiing, to its establishment as a world-famous ski area which hosts breath-taking ski world cup races every year. In the audio guide you are accompanied by Erich Demetz, honorary citizen of Selva, pioneer and conceiver of the alpine Ski World Cup races in Val Gardena and President for 28 years of the FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski).

This winter hike follows the "Herrensteig" from Welschnofen | Nova Levante to Lake Carezza (Karer See | Lago di Carezza), considered one of the most magnificent alpine lakes. The lake, located at the foot of the Latemar and known for its deep green waters and the beautiful mountain backdrop, is frozen in winter and usually covered with a white blanket of snow.
From Welschnofen | Nova Levante, the path ascends with a steady, gentle incline up to Lake Carezza. Along the "Herrensteig", you are treated to beautiful views of the picturesque village of Welschnofen | Nova Levante. Upon reaching the lake, a breathtaking panorama opens up with views of the impressive mountain ranges of the Rosengarten | Catinaccio and Latemar.
During this winter excursion you may well just see modern farmsteads, but handy information boards showing pictures from the time reveal what the buildings really looked like in the past.

Cristina or Selva as a starting point. The walk follows the old rail tracks of the Val Gardena locomotive built during WWI (1915-1916) by Russian prisoners. Along the old railway line from La Poza to Santa Cristina you can find the diagram of the snow that fell since 1951.

Along the way, you can enjoy impressive views of the snow-covered Dolomites while walking through forest paths and gently sloping meadows. Along the route, several huts invite you to take a cozy break, including the Franzin Alm hut, the Ochsenhütte hut, the restaurant Tschein and the Frommer Alm hut.
On this wintry hike along a section of the Steinegg Ridgeway, you will pass through forests to beautiful viewpoints with fantastic views of the Rosengarten and Schlern mountains. After about half of the circular hike, you come to the Oberölgart alpine hut - a nice place to stop for a bite to eat and drink, even in winter. Via a tarred road with very little traffic, you come to a very idyllic chapel in the middle of the forest, the ‘Kaserer Bild’ chapel. Continue along the tarred road through the woods to the starting point.
