Winter hiking in South Tyrol

The Nature Trail Zans is accessible for wheelchairs. Fourteen sections give an insight in the flora and fauna of the Nature Park Puez-Geisler.

The winter hike along a section of the Steinegg Hiking Path is a beautiful circular trail with views of the Rosengarten and Schlern mountain ranges. Refreshments are available at the Oberölgart alpine hut.

This hike from Welschnofen | Nova Levante leads along the historic "Herrensteig" trail to Lake Carezza, which is considered one of the most magnificent alpine lakes and is known above all for its deep green water and the beautiful mountain scenery in the background.
The lake, which lies at the foot of the Latemar, is covered in a white blanket of snow in winter.

In winter, when Lake Carezza is covered with snow, the surrounding forest is transformed into a romantic winter landscape, while the mystical mountain backdrop of the Latemar towers over the lake.

The very easy and idyllic circular walk takes you to the church of St. Magdalena.

Starting point is the roundabout in Völs, from where you follow up to Fiè di Sopra/Umes. Turn left at the Hotel Heubad and continue along trail no. 1. The sunny path leads past some farms until you reach the Völser Weiher lake after 45 minutes.
The thirty-minute descent along trail no. 13 to St. Konstantin/ S. Costantino, passing historic summer retreat residences along the way, is recommendable. After a short break at the picturesque church, follow the trail through the meadows and woods back to Völs. This loop-route can also be hiked in the opposite direction.

This relaxing winter hike leads through idyllic snow-covered forests and meadows to the rustic Häusler Sam hut, which is modestly situated in a clearing surrounded by forest. It is well worth a visit to sample the delicious specialities of South Tyrolean cuisine (open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays).

The marvellous path with fantastic view to the Rosengarten | Catinaccio leads through the meadows "Frin" of Carezza.

This hike offers an impressive view of the Lang- and Plattkofel mountains (Sassolungo and Sassopiatto). The trail runs across extensive snow-covered Alpine meadows.

A hike to a beautiful pasture beneath the Geisler Mountains. You can stop by to eat at the alpine hut Geisler Alm which offers also a playground for children.

The hike leads from the Karerpass | Passo Costalunga first into the Latemar forest, where the hazel tree grows, which is used especially for the production of string instruments. For this reason, the wood has also been called ‘tonewood’. From the Latemar forest you reach the Lake Carezza (Karer See | Lago di Carezza), which is considered one of the most magnificent Alpine lakes and is known above all for its deep green water and the beautiful mountain scenery in the background.

The wildly romantic Tschamin Valley between the Schlern and the Rosengarten is the perfect destination for a winter hike for all those who love unspoilt nature. The destination of this winter walk is the Rechter Leger, a wonderfully situated box-seat spot with views over the Grasleitentürme towers and the Tschaminspitzen peaks.

This route leads to the famous monument erected to pay tribute to Sissi, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary (1837-1898) in order to commemorate her holiday in this area in 1897.

An interesting tour from the famous Lake Carezza through the forest to the Frommer Alm hut. 

On the hike you get to Prösels Castle, built around 1200 by the Counts von Völs. In the early 16th century it was extended and converted by the Governor of Tyrol, Leonhard von Völs, to a Renaissance castle.
