Europe’s largest high-altitude Alpine pasture

The higher up you go, the more you realise how large and stunning this high plateau is: with 56 km2, the Seiser Alm is the largest high-altitude Alpine pasture in Europe, extending from 1,600 to 2,950 m above sea level. Encompassing the peaks of the Dolomites, namely the Plattkofel, Langkofel, Schlern and Santnerspitze, the protected area is home to many animals and plants. Get exploring the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park and live the best experiences of the winter season, while marmots are hibernating and deer and foxes are still leaving their tracks in the snow.

More than 790 plant species can be found among the pastures or even in the smallest crevice. During springtime, crocuses break through the snow cover, while in summer, anemones, thrifts and gentian decorate the waysides. A place where high pasture has been profitable throughout many generations: today farmers still let their cattle graze on the Seiser Alm. How can you reach Seiser Alm high-altitude Alpine pasture? The Seiser Alm Alpine pasture is accessible from the village of Seis/Suisi via cable car or bus from Kastelruth. The car-use is restricted: until 9 am and from 5 pm.

Sustainable Seiser Alm

The Dolomites Region Seiser Alm has made a name as holiday paradise breaking down borders. In fact, Seiser Alm - Europe's largest high-altitude Alpine meadow - encompasses the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Schlern, Plattkofel and Langkofel mountains and South Tyrol's oldest Nature Park Schlern-Rosengarten to stand out as an appealing tourist destination in all seasons. For locals and the tourism industry has thus become imperative to protect their abundant wildlife and vegetation. Having received South Tyrol's highest sustainability label, Seiser Alm places great emphasis on waste prevention. The problems and treatment of this process involve everyone: committed members of the Alpine Club cleaning up garbage or mountain hut managers who avoid packaging when shopping. To protect nature is everyone's business.

What's on in Seiser Alm?

A rustic history and a mountain climate. Events here are organised accordingly: from traditional Kastelruth country weddings to the medieval Oswald von Wolkenstein equestrian tournament.
