Where every choice shapes your stay

Meet hosts whose choices help shape the place around them.

A warm “Griaß di”, the local dialect greeting, the smell of freshly baked bread, and a deep knowledge of every path and producer in the valley.

Behind these moments are people who have chosen to care for the place they call home, not just as somewhere they work, but as something worth passing on. Places to stay with the South Tyrol Sustainability Label® show this through practical measures such as renewable energy, short supply chains and support for the local community. Because doing things with care leaves a better kind of mark.

Hosts who are breaking new ground

It is about more than environmental measures. It is a clear choice to shape hospitality around respect for guests, staff and the place they share. Here are two stories that show what this looks like in practice.

How to recognise certified places to stay

Three levels, one pathway guided by verified criteria.

The South Tyrol Sustainability Label is awarded at three levels. The criteria are based on internationally recognised GSTC standards for sustainable tourism. About 300 accommodation properties in South Tyrol carry the label and focus on a variety of areas: from renewable energy and regional circular economies to fair working conditions and measures to protect nature and biodiversity. Implementation is reviewed on a regular basis.

For you, this means greater transparency when choosing your accommodation and the assurance that specific sustainability measures are being implemented.

Good to know

The South Tyrol Sustainability Label recognises accommodation that is gradually integrating sustainability into their daily operations. Each accommodation can set its own priorities – for example, in terms of regional products, energy, biodiversity or fair working conditions.

This provides you with guidance when searching for accommodation. At the same time, the label demonstrates that the businesses are implementing specific measures that are regularly reviewed.

The South Tyrol Sustainability Label helps you make a more conscious choice when selecting your accommodation. It stands for verified sustainability and recognises businesses that value quality, responsibility and a mindful approach to their surroundings. At a glance, you can see which businesses are taking concrete steps towards greater sustainability and have their efforts regularly assessed. The three levels show how far each accommodation has progressed on this journey. This makes it easier to find a place that reflects your values.

Level 3: To date, the highest level of the South Tyrol Sustainability Label has been awarded to accommodation on more than 90 properties in South Tyrol. This accommodation views sustainability as a way of life. They preserve cultural heritage, work closely with regional producers, artisans and designers and prioritise construction methods that respect the landscape and biodiversity. Accessible facilities make the stay easier for all guests. In addition, the businesses promote eco-friendly mobility and encourage guests, employees and suppliers to travel as sustainably as possible. Accommodation with a Level 3 Sustainability Label.

Level 2: More than 140 accommodation properties in South Tyrol with Level 2 are shaping their path together with their employees and regional partners. In addition, they promote equal opportunities, professional development and fair career advancement within the team. They prioritise regional products, strengthen local value chains and support community organisations and nonprofit initiatives. When shopping, they look for low-emission and – where possible – certified products and suppliers. Accommodation with a Level 2 Sustainability Label.

Level 1: The more than 70 lodging establishments with this label are increasingly using renewable energy sources and measuring their energy, water and CO2 consumption with the goal of reducing it. The company is also taking a closer look at waste and making an effort to avoid wasting food. They also avoid using cleaning products that contain harmful substances and opt for eco-friendly alternatives. Accommodation with a Level 1 Sustainability Label.

GSTC stands for Global Sustainable Tourism Council. The organisation is developing internationally recognised criteria for sustainable tourism. The South Tyrol Sustainability Label is based on these standards. The label's highest level meets GSTC requirements and is internationally recognised.
