Soar above the rugged peaks of the Dolomites, gaze down at the vineyards of the Adige/Etschtal Valley, or reach the permanent glaciers in a matter of minutes

The cable cars and chairlifts in South Tyrol are not just a means of transport, but panoramic experiences in their own right. With over 350 cable cars and chairlifts, South Tyrol boasts one of the most modern and efficient networks in the world: technological excellence at the service of natural beauty, connecting towns such as Bolzano/Bozen and Merano/Meran with the highest peaks.

Cable cars in Bolzano and the surrounding area: from city to plateau

The South Tyrol capital is the perfect starting point for those who want to alternate city life with life in the mountains.

The Renon/Rittner Seilbahn cable car, with its lower station just a short walk from the town centre, is the main way of visiting the famous earth pyramids of Ritten. Once you arrive, a ride on the Rittenbahn railway is a must. Tickets are included with the Südtirol Guest Pass. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for more peace and tranquillity, why not visit the small town of Kohlern/Colle by taking the Kohlerer Seilbahn cable car.

Cable cars in Meran, Schnalstal Valley and the surrounding area

The Meran/Merano area is characterised by marked contrasts in climate. The historic Meran 2000 cable car takes hikers from the mild climate of the spa town of Meran to alpine pastures in under ten minutes. Moving west, the Schnalstal Gletscherbahn/Val Senales cable car dominates the landscape of glaciers, while the smaller but equally charming lift facilities, such as the Aschbach/Rio Lagundo cable car at Rabland/Rablá in the municipality of Parcines/Partschins, offer direct access to the Texelgruppe (Gruppo di Tessa) Nature Park.

Cable cars in Val Gardena and Seiser Alm, in the heart of the Dolomites

Val Gardena is home to some of South Tyrol’s best-known mountain lifts. The Ortisei–Alpe di Siusi cable car is the gateway to Europe’s largest high-altitude Alpine pasture (Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm). Also very popular are the Siusi–Alpe di Siusi cable car and the many cable cars in Sëlva/Selva, a must for anyone embarking on the Sellaronda circuit.

Cable cars in the Kronplatz Region and the Pustertal Valley

One of the most popular destinations for skiing and mountain biking, Dolomites Region Plan de Corones/Kronplatz is served by state-of-the-art lift facilities. The Riscone-Plan de Corones/Reischach–Kronplatz cable car and the Olang/Valdaora cable car are the main access points. Also popular in this area are the Meransen/Maranza cable car, in the Gitschberg Jochtal area, and the Rio Pusteria/Jochtal cable car, which link the valley to sunny villages steeped in tradition. If you’re visiting San Candido/Innichen with your family, don’t miss the Monte Baranci chairlift, one of the area’s top attractions.

Cable cars in Eggental Valley and the Rosengarten massif area

Beneath the iconic peaks of the Latemar massif and Rosengarten/Catinaccio massif, the Nova Levante cable car and the Obereggen lifts make it easy to reach high-altitude mountain huts. The new Franzin cable car in the Carezza Dolomites ski area stands out for its focus on sustainability and its harmonious integration into the Dolomite landscape.

Useful tips for hikers and tourists

  • IDM Südtirol

    Timetables and seasonal opening hours

Before planning your trip, check the opening hours of the lift facilities. Most lift facilities have two seasons:

    • Summer: from the end of May to mid-October;

    • Winter: from the start of December to April.

In May and November, many lift facilities (including the Rittener Seilbahn cable car and the Meran 2000 cable car) may close for a few weeks for maintenance and mandatory technical checks.

Also, always remember to consult the weather bulletins and updated timetables to get the most out of your time in the mountains.

    Save money with travel passes

The cost of a single journey can be high. But there are a number of ways to save money:

    1. Südtirol Guest Pass: many hotels and guest houses include this card in the cost of your stay, giving you unlimited use of local public transport (including the Renon cable car/Rittener Seilbahn, Kohlern , and Mölten/Vöran cable cars).

    2. Mobilcard: if your accommodation doesn’t offer you the Südtiro Guest Pass, you can buy a Mobilcard for travel on trains, buses and some provincial cable cars.

    3. Dolomiti SuperSummer Card: if you’re planning to visit Val Gardena and Alta Badia regions or Val di Fassa Valley, this card gives you access to dozens of different lifts with a single pass.

Taking bikes and dogs on mountain lifts

Many cable cars are equipped to carry mountain bikes. Keep in mind, however, that on some cable cars, bikes are only allowed during certain times of day or for an additional charge

For dogs, leashes and muzzles are almost always compulsory inside enclosed cabins. On mountain lifts, there is usually a reduced fare for pets. Guide dogs for blind or visually impaired people and small dogs carried in their owner’s arms or in a suitable carrier travel free of charge

The most spectacular cable cars in South Tyrol

From historic cable cars to the most modern panoramic lift facilities, every part of South Tyrol offers a variety of experiences in the heart of the mountains, valleys and the Dolomites.

  1. The oldest cable car in the world: Kohlerer Seilbahn (Colle) Cable Car. Opened in 1908, the Kohlerer Seilbahn cable car in Bolzano is recognised as the world’s first bicable passenger lift. Now completely refurbished, it takes just 5 minutes to reach Kohlern (Colle), offering views over the city of Bolzano.

  2. The highest cable car: Schnalstal Gletscherbahn (Glacier Val Senales) Cable Car. If you’re looking for a high-altitude thrill, the Schnalstal Gletscherbahn cable car takes you up to an altitude of 3,212 metres. From the top station, the view stretches from the Ötztal Alps (Alpi Venoste) to the peaks of the Ortler Group/Gruppo dell’Ortles.

  3. The most modern (and spacious) cable car: Meran 2000 Cable Car. With cabins that can accommodate up to 120 people, the Meran 2000 cable car is a masterpiece of engineering. It is known for its speed and the futuristic design of its stations.

  4. The most panoramic cable car: Rittener Seilbahn (Renon) Cable Car. More than just a transport link for locals: it is a tourist attraction in its own right. The Bolzano–Oberbozen/Soprabolzano cable car offers sweeping 360-degree views of the Latemar massif and Rosengarten massif/Catinaccio ranges in the Dolomites.
