Rosengarten Group in the Dolomites

Hikes along scenic trails and charming mountain huts

The Rosengarten Group/Gruppo del Catinaccio captivates visitors with its rocky peaks, high-altitude pastures and mountain huts offering stunning views. This part of the Dolomites, between Fassa Valley/Val di Fassa and Eggental Valley/Val d’Ega, offers trails rich in history, landscapes that glow at dawn and dusk, and a deep connection with nature. Trails start from places such as Tiers am Rosengarten/Tires al Catinaccio, Welschnofen/Nova Levante and Karersee/Carezza. The routes lead towards the Vajolet Towers/Torri del Vajolet, the Coronelle Pass or Lake Antermoia, each with its own character, but all with the same mantra: walk slowly, observe the surroundings, breathe in the crisp air.

The mountains are at their best from June to September. The snow has melted, the mountain huts are open and the meadows are bursting with flowers. The colours become more intense in autumn and the silence deepens. Whatever the season, always have a good pair of walking shoes, respect the environment and keep an eye on the weather.

Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park

A Dolomite landscape shaped by time, set among woodland, pastures and legends

Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park/Parco Naturale Sciliar-Catinaccio stretches between the Schlern/Sciliar plateau and the rocky peaks of the Rosengarten/Catinaccio, also taking in the Tires Valley. It is one of the oldest parks in South Tyrol and offers a varied landscape, with larch forests, alpine meadows and impressive rock formations. As well as its natural beauty, the park is linked to myths from Ladin folklore, such as the legend of King Laurin. Well-marked trails, mountain huts and alpine farms allow hikers to explore the area with walks of varying lengths and levels of difficulty.

Hikes on the Rosengarten

Discover the trails that cross the Rosengarten/Catinaccio Group, among rocky walls, mountain pastures and historic mountain huts. From the easy circular walk around Karersee Lake/Lago di Carezza, to the more difficult hikes to the Vajolet mountain hut, every trail offers a different view of the Dolomites.

 

Family hike to the Roda di Vael mountain hut

After a comfortable ride up on the Paolina chairlift, the trail starts from the mountain hut of the same name, situated at 2,125 metres. From here, the route continues along a quiet path to the Christomannos monument, an imposing bronze eagle that overlooks the valleys and commemorates Theodor Christomannos – a pioneer of sustainable tourism in the Dolomites. From here, you have a view of the Fassa Valley/Val di Fassa, Eggental Valley/Val d’Ega and as far as the Latemar. If you’ve got any energy left, you can carry on to the Roda di Vael mountain hut and then on to the Rotwand and Pederiva mountain huts. Follow the same path back to the starting point.

Rosengarten circular route

Starting from the Kölner/Coronelle mountain hut, this is one of the most spectacular high-altitude walks in South Tyrol. The 12-km circular route crosses the Coronelle Pass, with an elevation gain of around 800 metres. Spectacular rock formations, vast alpine pastures and sweeping views of valleys and peaks characterise the hike.

Multi-day hikes in Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park

A multi-day route takes you from Welschnofen/Nova Levante to the heart of Schlern/Sciliar and Rosengarten/Catinaccio massifs. The first stage ends at the Roda di Vaèl mountain hut, passing through the Nigerpass/Passo Nigra and the surrounding mountain pastures. On the second day, continue towards the Vajolet mountain hut, with a detour via the Santnerpass/Passo Santner. After crossing the Principe Pass, the route continues to Tierser Alpl/Alpe di Tires mountain hut and the Schlernhaus. The final descent leads you to St. Zyprian/San Cipriano before returning to the starting point, Welschnofen/Nova Levante. A trek through some of the most iconic scenery in the Dolomites, suitable only for experienced hikers with confident footing and suitable equipment.

Via Ferrata routes on the Rosengarten

Anyone who climbs frequently knows that climbing is an activity that engages both body and mind. With each move you make, you climb higher, feeling the rock beneath your fingers while everything else fades into the distance. There are four via ferratas waiting for you to conquer the Rosengarten/Catinaccio.

  • Masarè Via Ferrata

    On the southern face of the Rosengarten you’ll find one of the most picturesque via ferratas in the area. With a difficulty rating of C, the route requires experience and a sure footing. The route climbs through rock chimneys and along rock walls to the summit of Masarè, where spectacular views of the Dolomites await.   • Santnerpass Via Ferrata

    If you get the chance, don’t miss this classic Dolomites route. The Santnerpass Via Ferrata takes you on a spectacular journey to a mountain hut nestled between rock faces. But be careful: the route is 7.7 km long and requires mountain experience and a full set of via ferrata equipment. → Route details

  • Roda di Vael Via Ferrata

    Perfect for those with some mountain experience and a good level of fitness. The Roda di Vael Via Ferrata is technically accessible, but offers extraordinary views stretching as far as the Latemar.   • Catinaccio d’Antermoia Via Ferrata

    This via ferrata is not for anyone in a hurry: every step offers a magnificent view and deserves to be appreciated to the full. Following exposed ledges and iron ladders, the route climbs to the highest summit in the Rosengarten Group. From the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree view stretching from the Marmolada to the Ortler. The Legend of King Laurin and the Enrosadira

The enrosadira is one of the most fascinating natural spectacles in the Dolomites.

In the middle of the day, the Rosengarten appears as a rugged massif, full of crevices, steep rock faces and dizzying peaks, but at sunset its pale dolomite rocks take on a magnificent red hue. This phenomenon, known as the “enrosadira”, inspired a captivating legend. According to the tale, Laurin, king of the dwarves, had a rose garden planted on these mountains. After placing a curse on it, he declared that no one would ever see it again, either by day or by night. But Laurin had forgotten about sunset, which is, in fact, the time of day when the Rosengarten is bathed in magnificent shades of red.

Refreshments and hospitality at high altitude

Here’s a list of the main Rosengarten mountain huts:

  • Santnerpass mountain hut: A spectacular location at the foot of the Rosengarten/Catinaccio rock walls, which can also be reached via the Santner via ferrata. The ideal base for anyone who wants to experience the mountains up close.

  • Roda di Vael mountain hut: Situated along the Masarè route, this is the perfect stopover for hikers and mountaineers. It offers unobstructed views of the Latemar and simple, tasty dishes.

  • Coronelle mountain hut: Just above the Nigerpass/Passo Nigra, the hut welcomes those coming up from the valley who are looking for a peaceful place with a view to stop and rest.

  • Antermoia mountain hut: A classic Dolomite mountain hut, located at the foot of the lake of the same name. A mandatory stop for anyone crossing the Rosengarten/Catinaccio from north to south.
