How does a forest change as a result of climate change? Why are wetlands so valuable and how are they preserved? And what does a language sound like that is now spoken in only a few valleys?

In South Tyrol/Südtirol, you'll find experiences that will amaze you and open up new perspectives. Where a different way of travelling begins

Be inspired by certified destinations where local people and initiatives help keep nature, culture and traditions alive and make them part of the experience.

A forest is more than just a backdrop

The forest is more than a backdrop. It is an ally. More than half of South Tyrol is covered by woodland. Forests help protect villages from avalanches, retain rainwater, regulate the local climate and provide a habitat for hundreds of species. Walking through them in the nature parks comes with both a privilege and a responsibility: to treat them with care. Destinations such as the Dolomites Region 3 Zinnen, Gsiesertal/Val Casies-Welsberg/Monguelfo-Taisten, Ratschings/Racines, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina and the Seiser Alm are taking steps to help protect these forests for the future.

Using water wisely

In South Tyrol, you can still drink water straight from many public fountains. That is not something to take for granted. The region’s 2,467 drinking water fountains reflect decades of care for its aquatic ecosystems. Bring a reusable bottle and refill it along the way. It is a simple way to avoid single-use plastic while travelling. Places such as Kaltern/Caldaro, the area around Eppan/Appiano, in the mountains landscapes of the Eggental Valley, and the waterways that flow through Brixen/Bressanone and  Meran/Merano show the variety of South Tyrol’s water landscapes.

“Griaß di” – a greeting that means so much more than "Hi"

“Griaß di”, a local dialect greeting, is also a sign of care. Protecting the region is not only about renewable energy or recycling. It also means keeping the Ladin language alive in the Dolomites Region Val Gardena, passing on traditions such as Haflinger horse breeding in Hafling/Avelengo-Vöran/Verano-Meran 2000, preserving local festivals and customs, and keeping small village grocery shops open.

Where regional cycles remain alive

Sometimes, regionality reveals itself in very unassuming ways. At breakfast with produce from the neighbouring farm, at a table made from wood sourced from local forests, or among people who pass on their craft with knowledge and care. This gives rise to regional cycles that connect the landscape, agriculture, crafts and hospitality. In the Passeier Valley, in  Ratschings and many other regions, you can see how this collaboration shapes everyday life. Here, tradition gives rise to new ideas. How to recognise certified destinations

Destinations that turn care for the environment and the local area into practical choices.

Already 19 regions and towns in South Tyrol are demonstrating how tourism can be organized in a way that respects nature, culture, and the local population. Step by step, they are implementing specific measures to preserve nature, culture, mobility and community life in their local area. The South Tyrol Sustainability Label® highlights this commitment. This means it is among a group of 25 sustainable destinations, the Green Destinations, worldwide. For you, this means greater transparency when choosing your vacation destination and the ability to base your decision on verifiable criteria.

Holiday regions taking action

In these regions, commitment takes many forms. You will experience it at the drinking water fountains, where you can fill up your reusable bottle, in nature, which will inspire you with its biodiversity, and in the accommodations with committed hosts.

Behind many South Tyrol nature experiences are people who work every day to preserve the landscape and share their knowledge of the landscape, wildlife and flora. For many years, the rangers at South Tyrol nature parks have been sharing what makes this habitat so special and helping people better understand the interconnections in nature.

They are supported by the Südtirol/ lto Adige Rangers in Prags, Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Villnöss, Eggental, Seiser Alm, Völs and Seis. As part of a pilot project, they are working to raise guests’ awareness of the importance of treating nature and the landscape with care.

If you’d like to delve even deeper into the unique features of our natural landscape, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to discover nature’s secrets in South Tyrol nature parks, through the  Dolomites Ranger programme, or on hikes in the great outdoors .

The South Tyrol Sustainability Label®  highlights which regions and towns are implementing specific measures to promote nature, culture, mobility and quality of life. The three levels show how far they've come on this journey.

For you, this means more guidance when planning your trip. You'll find regions and places where public transport, local offerings, nature experiences and the mindful use of resources are promoted.

The South Tyrol Sustainability Label® is awarded at three levels and indicates how far a region or town has already progressed on the path to sustainable development.

Level 1 designates regions that are taking the first important steps in the areas of climate protection, environmentally friendly mobility, the protection of nature and culture and fair conditions for employees and local businesses.

Level 2 refers to regions that are actively shaping their sustainable development. They promote accessibility, protect culture and the landscape, implement climate protection measures and strengthen the common good through local initiatives.

Level 3 is the highest honour. These regions meet the highest GSTC standards and are also “GSTC-recognised”, meaning they are internationally recognised. They are considered role models for sustainable tourism, actively protect nature and culture, promote the responsible use of resources and manage visitor flows with consideration for both people and the environment.

GSTC stands for Global Sustainable Tourism Council. The organisation is developing internationally recognised criteria for sustainable tourism. The South Tyrol Sustainability Label is based on these standards. The label's highest level meets GSTC requirements and is internationally recognised.
