The solitary giant of the Dolomites

High above, the jagged peaks of the Latemar rise up into the sky. The air is fresh and clear, and nature invites visitors to explore. The Latemar massif is the perfect setting for long hikes through the breathtaking natural landscape of the Dolomites. 

Once the first snow has fallen, the Eggental/Val d’Ega region becomes a winter sports paradise: from Obereggen you can speed down the slopes with their stunning views or head down into the valley on a sledge. Or why not put on some snowshoes and walk through the snow-covered landscapes. As soon as the snow melts, the Alpine landscape bursts into life in all its splendour. In spring and summer, visitors can go rock climbing, walk to viewing platforms or find peace of mind on a mindfulness trail. All easy to reach using public transport, lift facilities or on foot.

Winter on the Latemar: a wonderful experience in the great outdoors

With its unmistakable silhouette, the Latemar is a sight to behold, even without snow. But in winter, when it’s covered in shimmering white snow, its majestic beauty never ceases to amaze.

Whether you’re carving up the slopes of Obereggen, snowshoeing through silent woodland or having fun with your family as you race your way down a toboggan run, the breathtaking scenery of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site is always there. Get ready for some unforgettable winter sports experiences on the Latemar massif!

 

Obereggen Ski Resort

If you want to explore the Latemar on skis, the Obereggen Ski Resort is a great option. Repeatedly awarded as one of the best ski resorts in the Alps, Obereggen charms visitors with its perfectly groomed slopes for every ability – sunny, varied and connected to the nearby Fiemme Valley (Val di Fiemme). Snowboarding and freestyle enthusiasts can enjoy the renowned Obereggen Snowpark, while food lovers can taste regional specialities at the numerous mountain huts.

Immerse yourself in the peace and tranquillity of the snow-covered Dolomites with two fantastic winter routes. The snowshoe trail that goes from Karerpass/Passo Costalunga to Mitterleger will take you to the Mitterleger viewpoint, offering a spectacular, unobstructed view of the Latemar. The winter hiking trail from Obereggen to the Eggental/Val d’Ega alpine farms, on the other hand, follows a well-trodden path from mountain hut to mountain hut, where you can recharge your batteries with South Tyrolean specialities.

Sledging down the slopes

You’ll find two sledge runs in Obereggen: the Absam run, ideal for families and beginners with its easy route and modest length of just 750 metres. Those looking for a more thrilling experience can choose the Epircher-Laner Alm to Obereggen toboggan run (2.5 km): it starts at an altitude of 1,830m and rapidly descends towards the valley. Both runs are easily accessible by cable car or chairlift and offer hours of winter sledging fun.

Things to do in spring and summer on the Latemar

As soon as the snow melts, nature bursts into life around the Latemar: spring flowers sprout from the ground and the first warm rays of sunlight caress the alpine meadows. The mild temperatures and long summer days are perfect for exploring the region. You can easily reach the mountain resorts using the lift facilities, discover the Dolomites by walking along scenic and circular trails and relax in one of the popular Latemar mountain huts. You can challenge yourself on the via ferrata routes, while nature trails offer fascinating insights into nature.

 

Latemarium & Latemar 360°

The Latemarium area captivates visitors with its holistic, nature-oriented concept: nine nature trails and one spectacular 360° viewing platform, "Latemar.360°", where people of all ages can discover the Latemar from every angle. During its construction, the impact on the environment was kept to a minimum in order to consciously enhance the existing landscape. This outdoor paradise can be reached using the Oberholz chairlift and the Ochsenweide cable car.

Campanili del Latemar Via Ferrata (Torre Diamantidi)

This challenging via ferrata route takes you into the heart of the spectacular rocky landscape of the Campanili del Latemar. From Obereggen, take the Oberholz chairlift up to 2,100 m, then continue on foot along the Forcella dei Camosci/Gamsstallscharte and the Forcella di Ercolana/Erzlahnscharte to the via ferrata (B). Follow the equipped sections to reach Torre Diamantidi (2,842 m). The return route passes through the M. Rigatti Bivouac and the Latemarhütte/Torre di Pisa mountain hut. This route is reserved exclusively for experienced hikers equipped with via ferrata equipment. Note that in winter, there may be snow and ice!

Latemar Labyrinth Trail

Have you ever been in a natural rock labyrinth? This one formed naturally following a huge landslide that broke away from the Latemar. The path to this natural monument starts from Karerpass/Passo Costalunga and continues to the "Eggental/Val d'Ega Mountain Cinema". Here you can enjoy an authentic Alpine view before setting off along the labyrinth trail. After walking for about an hour through the imposing rock formations, you’ll return to the starting point through the Karersee/Carezza forest.

Latemarhütte/Torre di Pisa mountain hut Trail

This route, ideal for experienced hikers, is one of the most beautiful in the southern part of the Latemar massif. After taking the Oberholz chairlift up the mountain, follow the path to the Latemar.360° viewing platform. From there, head up along the Latemar.Panorama trail to the Feudo Pass. The final stretch along the rocky path offers breathtaking views. After a well-deserved break at the mountain hut (2,670 m), the descent takes you through the Valsorda valley to return to the upper station.

Mindful Latemar

Slow down, breathe, recharge: the Mindful.Latemar path in Obereggen is the first mindfulness trail in the Alps. At an altitude of 1,872 metres, at the foot of the Latemar, 18 mindfulness exercises encourage you to become more aware of yourself. The trail, which can be explored with a guide or using an app, winds its way through a landscape left scarred by Storm Vaia, offering unobstructed views of the surrounding area. Simply hop on the Ochsenweide cable car, put on your headphones and immerse yourself completely in the here and now.

How to reach the Latemar

  • By public transport: Obereggen and the Karerpass (Passo Costalunga) are ideal starting points for exploring the Latemar. Buses run regularly from Bolzano, and you can board them at numerous stops along the route. If you arrive by bus, you can, for example, set off on the hike to Lavazè or take the family-friendly trail to Mitterleger and the Latemar mountain pastures.

  • Hiking paths, bike trails and via ferratas: The most active to explore the area. Starting from the seven main towns in the region, you can explore the Alpine landscape on foot, by bike or by climbing, if you fancy going a bit higher. For example, the classic Latemar Ronda mountain bike route starting from Welschnofen/Nova Levante. Or along the “Temple Trail” (Templweg) towards Karersee Lake/Lago di Carezza, starting from Obereggen.

  • Obereggen lift facilities: This is the most convenient way to reach high altitudes. In winter, it’s a skiing destination; in summer, it’s a paradise for hiking and outdoor activities. If you want to minimise the climb, the best option is to use the lift facilities leaving from Obereggen, which take you to the start of countless adventures on the Latemar more or less all year round.
