On high plateaus, at the edges of forests and among rolling hills, the view opens up over valleys and mountain ranges. You'll find places like that in South Tyrol. Sometimes the view extends all the way to the Dolomites; other times, it takes in quiet side valleys. Many of these places combine scenic views with quiet paths, regional cuisine and a cultural landscape shaped by the passage of time. Taking a break doesn't require a plan – just time.
On the Deutschnonsberg high plateau lie Laurein/Laurengo, Proveis/Proves, St. Felix/San Felice and Unsere Liebe Frau im Walde/Senale. Old farmsteads, dense forests, alpine pastures and striking peaks such as the Laugenspitze and the Ilmenkamm characterise the landscape. Here you'll walk along quiet paths, past fields of radicchio and old mills. No hustle and bustle, no rush.
Aldein/Aldino, Altrei/Anterivo, Radein/Redagno and Truden/Trodena are located in the Trudner Horn Nature Park. The landscape around Schwarzhorn, Weißhorn, Trudner Horn and in the Geoparc Bletterbach shows you what time spent in nature can do. Dark porphyry, light-coloured dolomite, forests and meadows all tell the story of this area’s long natural history. Take your time. Here, you're not just walking through the countryside; you're taking a step-by-step journey back into its past.
On the Raschötz above Lajen/Laion, a view of the Dolomites opens up before you. From up here, you can see the Peitlerkofel, the Geislerspitzen, the Schlern, the Langkofel and the Plattkofel peaks. The panorama is particularly impressive along the Dolorama long-distance hiking trail. Take your time, stop and pause every now and then, listen to the wind and let the hustle and bustle of everyday life fade away.
Even on the Tschögglberg, you'll feel that sense of distance. In Jenesien/San Genesio, Vöran/Verano and Mölten/Meltina, you'll walk through ancient larch forests, across high-altitude pastures and past traditional farms. A lot of things here seem to have developed gradually. People take great care to preserve their culture and natural environment and that is exactly what makes it easy to feel at home here.
Tisens/Tesimo and Prissian/Prissiano are situated in sunny locations above the Etschtal Valley. Six castles and palaces here tell their stories. On walks through chestnut groves and past vineyards, you can gaze far into the valley and discover places where you’ll want to linger.
In Rodeneck/Rodengo, Rodenegg Castle towers over the Rienz Gorge. The castle is one of the major fortified castles of South Tyrol. Up here, you can enjoy the silence high above the valley. If you prefer to hike in search of tranquility, start from the village and head toward the Rodenecker Lüsner Alm and its scenic trails.
In Terenten/Terento, you're on the sunny side of the Pustertal valley. Known for its many hours of sunshine, trails here lead you to the earth pyramids or along the Mühlenweg. As you do so, you'll see how the landscape has been shaped over a long period of time.
