Visible, tangible and verified. The Dolomites Region Eggental has achieved Level 3 of the South Tyrol Sustainability Label®. The certification is based on a GSTC-recognised standard. For several years, local producers and restaurants have worked together to strengthen local supply chains. The destination implements measures in socioeconomic, environmental and cultural areas and can also offer inspiration to other holiday regions. The villages of the region await you with family-run shops, where local artisans and producers offer unique creations and homemade products.
Did you know that it takes a plastic bottle around 500 years to break down in the mountains? A cigarette butt takes up to seven years to decompose, whilst a tissue takes almost five. Rubbish in the countryside harms the natural environment and endangers animals. That is why the South Tyrol/Südtirol CleanUP Days initiative is taking place again this year. From 17 to 20 September 2026, the Puez-Geisler and Texel Group Nature Parks, the Odles Slow Dolomites, Gitschberg Jochtal/Rio Pusteria, Ritten/Renon, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina, Antholzertal/Valle Anterselva, Eggental/Val d’Ega, Dolomites Region 3 Zinnen, Ratschings/Racines, Südtirols Süden and Lana are inviting people to take part in joint litter-picking campaigns. In this way, everyone involved helps to protect nature and the countryside. After all, every little bit helps to keep paths, woods and riverbanks clean.
You can join in too.You can collect all the equipment you need from the tourism organisations in the participating regions. You can plan your own route or join a guided litter-picking walk and help clean up a path. You should then take the rubbish you have collected to a designated collection point.
The largest village has no more than 3,000 inhabitants. Eggental's villages are snug, quiet and close to the mountains. They are ideal places for unplugging. Choose a holiday immersed in nature.
The villages of Welschnofen and Karersee are located close by to South Tyrol’s capital city Bolzano/Bozen at the foot of the legendary peaks of the Rosengarten and Latemar massifs. The face of each is reflected in one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Alps, the Karersee lake . A visit to its enchanting waters is worthwhile on holiday in summer or wintertime. The well-known forest near Welschnofen is the source of tonewood, a wood from which violins in Venice are still made today.
Situated dramatically between the Latemar and Rosengarten massifs, with views of the striking rock formations of Schlern, Zanggen, Weißhorn and Schwarzhorn, lies the municipality of Deutschnofen. It includes the villages of Eggen/Ega, Obereggen and Petersberg/Monte San Pietro and the main village of Deutschnofen. Holidaymakers here can expect hikes of various degrees of difficulty as well as guided themed hikes, all of which are easily accessible by public transportation. South Tyrol’s most popular pilgrimage site , the Maria Weißenstein monastery, is located in the Eggental valley.
Steinegg is situated in the heart of the Rosengarten, Latemar, and Schlern massifs. Its enchanting views of the South Tyrolean Dolomites alone are reason for a visit. The scattered villages of Steinegg, Gummer/San Valentino in Campo, Karneid/Cornedo all'Isarco, Kardaun/Cardano, Blumau/Prato all’Isarco, and Breien/Briè are located between 275 and 1,650 m above sea level. On holidays here, the Burg Karneid castle, the symbol of the municipality, towers over the Eggental valley gorge and can be visited as part of a tour in the summer months. A visit to South Tyrol’s only astronomical observatory “Max Valier” as well as the planetarium in Obergummer are both highly recommended.
It's little wonder that legends about this region, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, emerged : a lovesick magician cast a rainbow into Lake Karersee because he was in love with a water nymph who lived there. This gave the lake its wide range of colours and the nickname of “rainbow lake". Alongside the Rosengarten massif there's the rugged Latemar mountain which can be explored via themed trails in the Latemarium Adventure Kingdom and, of course, along hiking and MTB trails. Following the efforts of conquering the climbing sections, you will be rewarded at the mountain huts with steamed Knödel and creamy risotto. The region offers wide-ranging views in the form of the views of the surrounding mountain landscape and the unique astronomical observatory in South Tyrol and Planetarium. The valley has made considerable efforts to establish a sustainable economy – from the management of the accommodation to organisation of the two ski areas of Obereggen and Carezza Dolomites. Get to the Latemarium from Obereggen by chairlift - the Oberholz - or cable car - the Ochsenweide - and walk on one of its themed trails.

In the Dolomites Region Eggental and in the rest of South Tyrol, you will find a wide selection of local high-quality foods and hand-crafted everyday and art objects. Lots of producers sell from local shops or straight from the farm where you can sample the treats and get to know the producers. With a bit of luck, you can even look over the shoulders of craftsmen at work as they create jewellery, wooden sculptures and baskets while strolling through the village. High quality and durability are the primary factors, which are achieved through the use of proprietary manufacturing techniques and high-quality raw materials.
