The secret of the fabled Karersee lake
Winter magic at one of South Tyrol's most beautiful mountain lakes |
It truly is a feast for the eyes when the wild and rugged Latemar Dolomite massif is reflected in Karersee lake. The colour of the lake changes throughout the day – ranging from emerald green and turquoise through to a blue-grey. In the Ladin language, the lake is called "Lec de ergobando" – rainbow lake. According to legend, a magician once fell in love with the beautiful water fairy of Karersee lake and wanted to impress her with a rainbow. When she spurned him, the enraged magician threw the rainbow into the lake, giving it its multi-coloured glow.
A snowshoe hike from the Karerpass to Karersee lake or simply around the lake is the perfect way to enjoy the stunning views of the Latemar massif and the Rosengarten massif in the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site, allowing you to delve into the mythology of this magical place.
