The name Kastelruth comes from the name „Castellum Ruptum,” which means “destroyed castle.” Historical documents have revealed that a magnificent fortress stood on the Calvary hill.

The vast, gently undulating plateau of volcanic origin lying between Welschnofen and Tiers is covered with magnificent fir woods and dotted with large pastures, each one providing grazing in the summer. The rural landscape and its functions are easy to make out and perfectly preserved.The itinerary is long enough to get a good understanding of the structure of the landscape, which follows the morphology of the land. Mount Rosengarten, between the Karerpass, Tireser Alpl and Valley Fassatal, is a rugged, craggy crest with a number of peaks reaching an altitude of 3,000 metres: Kesselkogel, Rosengarten, Cima Scalieret, Vajolet-Türme und Rotwand.
The Engelrast viewing platform on Puflatsch offers a breathtaking 360° panoramic view of the Alpe di Siusi, the Val Gardena and the Dolomites. The platform is surrounded by a metal plate that gives a detailed description of the fantastic mountain panorama of the entire Alpe di Siusi with Sciliar, Sassolungo and Sassolungo, as well as the surrounding mountain ranges. You can find out which mountains you can see in which direction of the sky and how high the peaks are. A nice detail of this platform is the little angel enthroned above this vantage point. A visit to this magnificent viewpoint with some wooden benches is worthwhile. The Engelrast is located near the mountain station of the Telemix Puflatsch. You can reach the viewing platform on foot from Compatsch on the Alpe di Siusi following hiking trail no. 14 or by taking the Puflatsch cable car.
In Compatsch (opposite the church) there is a small toboggan park that can be used as a toboggan run and sliding hill. Patrick Lambacher, former tobogganing world champion from Villnöss, offers free tobogganing courses three times a week, where those interested can get tips and tricks for learning the right braking and riding technique.
The toboggan park can be used freely by everyone outside of the “course times”. It is therefore accessible at all times!

A pleasant winter walk to relax and simply enjoy life in a quite area on Seiser Alm. This route offers a breathtaking view of the Schlern/Sciliar mountain, almost within hand’s reach from the Spitzbühl, and leads onwards over endless snow-covered alpine meadows back to the starting point.
This easy loop trail is directly behind the Cross-Coutry Centre in Ritsch and leads from the Ritsch Hotel and Restaurant to the Große Moos. With outstanding views over the Langkofel and
Plattkofel, this practice piste guarantees an unforgettable experience for young and old alike. Beginners can get a feel for cross-country skiing on the practice trails and hone their double poling, diagonal stride and herringbone techniques. The tracks are also ideal for warming-up before heading out on longer tours.
The trail begins in Compatsch and passes the St. Franziskus Church and to the left of the road over vast Alpine meadows and a small wood to the Cross-Country Centre in Ritsch. For beginners, this trail alternates easy sections with stretches that are somewhat more demanding. Skiers with a degree of technical expertise use the trails as a link route to the more difficult trails which begin at the Cross-Country Centre in Ritsch. This trail was designed as a warm-up route.

The Funpark for kids at the village lift offers a winter experience full of fun and activity – perfect for beginners on skis or with sleds. Here, little ones can sled down the slope and conveniently ride back up with the conveyor belt – again and again! The Funpark is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Please note that there is no sled rental on-site – sleds can be rented at K&K in Seis am Schlern.
This easy loop-route runs on the flat with practically no ascent. From Ritsch, the tracks lead over the Große Moos heading north and then onwards and slightly downhill in long curves. On the next slope, the Möser tracks bear slightly uphill over rolling Alpine meadows, with breathtaking panoramic views over the Langkofel and Plattkofel accompanying you along the route. The trail then leads over easy, undulating terrain back to the set-off point in Ritsch.

The Schlern: emblem mountain of South Tyrol, gentle giant and hiking paradise. This tour leads straight over the Seiser Alm, ascends all the way up to the Tierser Alpl, surrounded by its impressive rocky formations, and then crosses over the Schlern plateau to arrive at destination - the “Castle in the Dolomites”: The Refuge Schlernhaus mountain hut – or rather, mountain huts, given that there are 4 of them alongside each other, all built between 1885 and 1908 , in an architectural style which merges seamlessly with the surrounding countryside. The interior decor is, for the main part, in its original condition and wakens a sense of mountaineering nostalgia and an atmosphere of sociable companionship, rounded off to perfection with traditional South Tyrolean dishes.
What better way to experience the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites and the surrounding mountains than on a two-day hut hike to the highlights in the holiday region Seiser Alm? The first stage of our tour leads to the Schlern, whose unmistakeable form is the emblem of South Tyrol. The following day we make our way to the privately-owned Refuge Tierser Alpl hut with its distinctive red roof and on to the Seiser Alm.
The route of the the Dolomites High Route n. 9 , unlike most other Dolomite High Altitude Trails, runs as a transversal from west to east over the ridges of the Dolomites, most of which rise from south to north.
Long-distance hiking trail with panoramic views
The Dolomites High Trail No. 9 starts in the provincial capital of South Tyrol, Bozen/Bolzano, then crosses South Tyrol and part of the province of Belluno. The stages of the long-distance hiking trail are really short and therefore also suitable for hikers with less physical condition. This long-distance hike takes you to the most beautiful places in the Dolomites. The route is taken within 12 to 14 days.
This loop route starts and ends in Ritsch and passes through the Kleine Moos on practically flat terrain, making it perfect for newcomers to cross-country skiing. With exceptional views over the Dolomite peaks of the Langkofel and Plattkofel, the Ritsch Trail is an unforgettable experience. Those who are trying their hand at cross-country for the first time can get a real feel for the sport here before tackling the more challenging trails on the Seiser Alm.
The longest and most challenging cross-country trail of the Seiser Alm leads out from the Cross-Country Centre in Ritsch through vast Alpine meadows in a steep uphill to the mountain station of the Panorama chairlift. Then, in numerous curves, cross the Palude di Ladins/Ladinser Moos and continue on towards Joch and Spitzbühl, past the Laurinhütte hut and back to Ritsch. With the nearby Dolomite peaks of the Langkofel, Plattkofel and the Schlern massif, the views along this trail are breathtaking.
The “Fleischhauerei Wolcan”, the butcher’s shop in Blumau, was opened in 1894 and is run today by the fifth generation of the same family. It offers quality meats sourced almost entirely from small farms in the neighbouring communities of Karneid, Tiers, Völs and Ritten. The shop also offers traditional home-made South Tyrolean meat products.
This hike leads you to the foot of the Rosengarten massif in close proximity to the famed Vajolet Towers and on to the Haniger Schwaige mountain hut. The descent leads over vast mountain meadows and beautiful woodland down to the Plafötsch mountain hut and St. Zyprian in Tiers.

This link-trail connects the Hotel Sonne to the Möser, Wolfsbühl and Hartl trails. It ranges very little in elevation and is an easy run which is also suitable for beginners.
At the entrance of the Tschamin Valley, you’ll find the visitor centre of the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park, located in the historic Steger Sawmill – a rare, water-powered Venetian sawmill.
Until 2021, the building served as the Nature Park House Schlern-Rosengarten, making it the oldest nature park centre in South Tyrol. In recent years, it has been carefully restored, and the sawmill has been brought back into working condition.
Inside, visitors can explore authentic traces of traditional alpine craftsmanship and living culture – with the original saw and a reconstructed living area offering a glimpse into the past.
