Kastelruth – St. Oswald – Kastelruth

At the main square Kraus take the left archway and follow n. 16 along Via Platten to Hotel Villa Kastelruth. Continue along the road for approx. We continue along the main road for 500 m until we reach a crossroad where we turn left onto a small access road and follow signpost 16.  It is almost flat at the beginning, passing the farmhouse Rundschuh, with a view of the lovely village of Tisens on the opposite side of the valley. Continue slightly downhill to the beautiful farmhouse Puntschuh, and then through the fields into the bush forest steeply descending near a romantic brook gorge. This is a historical short cut of the route used once as an important connection to the railway station of Kastelruth. Following the trail on your left, soon reach the farmhouse Planötsch and then steeply ascending in several hairpin bends, go past the Fall Bild and the ice holes to St. Oswald. The little church of the same name was first mentioned in a document in 1234, also the steeple dates back to that time. Inside you find some sights´: a remarkable choir from the year 1400 and on the northeastern choir wall a picture of the crucifixion from the middle of the 15th century.

Not far from the little church, very close to the schoolhouse, there is a petty pond. It is very quiet and pleasant to stay here; the sometimes-loud frog concert is not disturbing at all. At the farmhouse Tschötscher you find a small farmer museum with exhibits of rural culture. For the way back to Kastelruth now take road n. 7 past the small refreshment place St. Oswald and follow it uphill, in several turns, to the farmhouses Malider.

Here leave the road and turn left into path n. 5, which takes you through open meadows past the farmhouse Sattler and soon through a dense forest, steeply ascending to the farmhouses Lanzin. The locals call the trail from the farmhouse Sattler to the farmhouse Lanzin the Pesttol. Here you have a wonderful view of Castelrotto, the Odle Peaks, Bullaccia and Sciliar. Over the asphalt road, you reach Telfen in a short hike. At the market garden Griesser continue to follow trail n. 5 though meadows and short forest sections and after about 30 minutes you reach the starting point Kastelruth again.

Alternatively, and to shorten the hike, it is possible to return from St. Oswald to the starting point in Castelrotto by bus line 177.
