Clothing and equipment

With the right hiking gear, you can not only explore the mountains but do so safely too. Choose good footwear and clothing that is suitable for the season and can be layered. So you're well equipped whatever the weather. What to pack on a hike? Your hike essentials are: a water bottle for refilling with drinking water from the springs or wells along the way. Your trekking packing list should also include plenty of food, sun cream, as well as a torch, a fully charged mobile phone with an emergency number saved, and a hiking first-aid kit.

Preparation and organisation

Plan the mountain hike according to your fitness and physical condition. Don’t underestimate the difficulty and length of the route you’ve chosen. Go through it in advance and familiarise yourself with it. Check the mountain weather forecast the evening before or on the day of the hike. Make sure you’re properly prepared, or postpone the hike if the weather is bad.  If you’re planning a ski tour or a glacier tour, you should also check the avalanche forecast.

Huts and useful information

Alpine huts in South Tyrol are important stopping points along the way, offering shelter from thunderstorm in the mountains, food and, in some cases, overnight accommodation. Please check the opening hours in advance and sign the logbook when you arrive. This makes it easier for the mountain rescue team to narrow down the search area in an emergency. Share your route with friends or family too.

In an emergency, call the mountain rescue service and first aid on the emergency number 112. Alternatively, you can call for help with the SOS EU ALP app .

Health and safety

Hiking and mountaineering are endurance sports and require a realistic assessment of one’s own abilities and a good level of fitness. Snacks made from nutrient-rich foods provide you with energy and help you maintain your performance. It is just as important to drink regularly to keep your circulation healthy.

You should also be prepared for any emergencies. Every rucksack should contain a small first-aid kit. In an emergency, stay calm, ensure your own safety and provide the best possible care for the injured person until professional help arrives.

Trekking, via ferrata and climbing

Whether it’s trekking,  via ferrata or rock climbing – each discipline offers its own unique way of experiencing the mountains of South Tyrol and presents different challenges. When it comes to trekking, good planning, choosing a suitable route and having the right trekking gear and clothing are essential.

For via ferrata and rock climbing, you’ll also need the right technique and climbing gear: a climbing helmet, harness and via ferrata kit with carabiners, climbing rope and other mountaineering equipment are essential. It is also important to maintain a safe distance, use the correct safety equipment and keep a close eye on the weather and potential hazards.

Cycling and Mobility

You can also explore the mountains of South Tyrol/Südtirol on two wheels. Many cycling tours are easily accessible by public buses, cable cars and regional trains. Find out about the route and mountain weather in advance, and adapt your route and pace to your ability. Choose the right bike for your chosen route. Check brakes, tyres and lights, wear a helmet and suitable clothing and shoes and take a repair kit, water and provisions with you.

Be considerate: slow down when you come across walkers and stick to designated paths.

Families, dogs and nature

If you are travelling with children or dogs, you should plan your tour particularly carefully. Choose paths that suit your abilities and always keep your dog on a lead near grazing animals.

The mountains are a fragile environment that can only be preserved if you explore them with care. Stay on marked paths and don't leave any rubbish behind. Do not pick flowers and keep quiet to avoid disturbing wildlife. By behaving responsibly, you are helping to ensure that future generations can also experience the unspoilt beauty of the mountains.

Elena Zanetti

"Respect your boundaries. A hike is not a competition. Choose a route based on your actual physical condition, not on how you’d like to be. The mountains reward those who are humble."

Thomas Hofer
