    It tastes even better at high altitude: South Tyrolean cuisine is characterized by rural down-to-earthness and Mediterranean lightness. On the mountains, you can enjoy the lovingly prepared dishes made from local products even more with a special view. Here is a selection of places to enjoy great food in an alpine atmosphere.

    Our ski lodge in Ratschings, the Schistodl, is located directly on the valley run. For lunch we serve 30 different pizzas and delicious specialties from South Tyrolean and Italian cuisine. In winter, we offer you from 11 am to 18 clock throughout hot meals. In summer the Schitodl is closed.

    The Oberetteshütte is located at 2,670m in alpine terrain at the foot of the Weißkugel, at the head of the valley from the mountaineering village of Matsch. The Saldur lakes, a magical lake plateau, are not far from the Oberetteshütte. Sheep graze around the hut, marmots whistle, there is a small climbing garden near the hut. The mighty Matscher Ferner is also within easy reach. Peace and nature are the hallmarks of the hut. The innkeepers cook down-to-earth dishes with good, seasonal and above all regional produce. The farmers of the Matschertal and Vinschgau valley supply the Oberetteshütte with their products, almost all in organic quality. Open: from mid-June to the end of September

    The Almrosen hut is accessible via trail no. 7 from Compaccio/Compatsch and via the Hans-and-Paula-Steger trail, which also starts in Saltria. It is the ideal starting point for hikes to the Sciliar/Schlern mountain, the Gruppo del Catinaccio/Rosengarten, and the Sasso Lungo/Langkofel and Sasso Piatto/Plattkofel mountains.

    The newly opened “Heualm” is located at 1,933 m above sea level surrounded by green flowering alpine meadows, larch trees and the Dolomites. The tranquillity of nature, the breathtaking all-round panorama and the wide and lush alpine meadow make this place special. Due to its idyllic location, delicious South Tyrolean culinary specialities and warm hospitality, the small alpine hut is a popular destination for hikers and connoisseurs. The Heualm can be reached comfortably by foot, by mountain bike or by horse-drawn carriage. From Compatsch via hiking trail no. 7 and no. 6 with a duration of approx. 1 hour or via hiking trail no. 30 and no. 6/6b with a duration of approx. 1 hour.

    Fresh homemade delicacies await you here, at 1,914 meters above sea level in the beautiful Zerzertal. At the Brugger-Alm there is an place where you can enjoy the alpine cheese, which is made in summer from the milk of about 70 cows, and hearty South Tyrolean food. Open from mid-May to early October.

    The perfect winter hiking trail for the whole family: on foot, with the toboggan or with the touring ski. From Weißenbach/Rio Bianco the walking time is approx. 1 hour (toboggan run “Tristenbach”).

    In the middle of the Stelvio National Park is the Göflaner Alm Alpine Pasture at 1,826 m, directly at the Göflan marble trail. Since 2014, the pasture is managed by the Tappeiner family. It is open throughout the summer and offers many traditional dishes and homemade specialties. While hikers and bikers are enjoying delicious dishes, the cows, horses, pigs and chickens will taste the summer freshness in the mountains.

    The Höfer Alm alpine pasture will remain closed in the 2025 summer season. The Höfer Alm Alpine hut is a popular destination in summer as well as in winter. On the sun terrace you can enjoy a magnificent view of the mountains of the Ötztal Alps and the Ortler Group. The Höfer Alm spoils guests with homemade food and serves South Tyrolean fare and daily specials on its small menu. Hikers will certainly get their money's worth here. Without much effort, the hut at 2,066 metres altitude is easily accessible from the Watles valley station.
