Traditions and a glimpse of times long gone

The mountain farmsteads on the southern hillside of the Pusteria/Pustertal valley are a remnant of the times when the Romans began to settle in the area. Only a little is left of the ancient baths of Ilistra/Ilstern, to which the locals once flocked in search of the soothing medicinal effect of their spa waters. Not far off, a small chapel has successfully defied the centuries and can easily be reached on a meditation trail. But hiking along Monghezzo/Getzenberg also offers plenty of impressions of the hard life and labor of mountain farmers, and the ancient farmhouses are often named after the dwellers' special dedication: The Vögler farmstead, for example, recalls the old Tyrolean tradition of fowling, or bird-catching.
Half-way up the route at 1112 m, the Jausenstation Hoferhof inn is a fine place for a break and some refreshments. A small, carefully restored chapel is all that is left of a hermitage, which is said to have been located not far from the Getzenbergerhof inn. The Kustoler-Hof farmstead was named after the Romance term for a fortified area, and the Roman milestone on the western edge of the hamlet Casteldarne/Ehrenburg is yet another witness of the ancient settlements in and around Chienes/Kiens.

Hike through the Mühlbach/Riomolino valley to the western peak of the Rieserferner Group. It is a challenging route recommended only for well-trained hikers.

From Pederü, the road will take you up past the Fodara Vedla pastures. From there, the Sennes inn is only an hour’s walk away.

From the village square via Valiares follow the trail called “Tres La Val” up to the “Spiaggetta Ciamaor” park. From there following the signs to “Tres La Val” and continue on the right side of the stream to Fodara Masaronn. One-way: 5 km

From the church in Longiarü, head south-west towards Frëina/Seres along the road until you reach the bridge. From there, a small path leads through the forest to Frëina. Follow the paved road on the right and, in the bend after the bridge, take the narrow path on your left. Walk past the Vanc farmstead to the hamlet Seres, a lovely example of the extraordinary historic Viles. Val di Murins, the valley of the mills, opens up just before the bridge over the stream.

San Sigismondo/St. Sigmund butterfly trail

Scattered throughout the sunny hillside between San Sigismondo/St. Sigmund and Terento/Terenten, the local farms have long shaped and fostered the landscape with great care. Colorful meadows in full bloom, scented forests, and plenty of pristine nature – the perfect habitat for butterflies of all kinds and sizes. Along the path, you can learn a lot of interesting information about the butterflies on display boards and rest on original benches.
Before setting off, don't forget to pay a visit to the beautiful Gothic church of San Sigismondo/St. Sigmund. This parish church is one of the most exquisite architectural heritage sites in all of South Tyrol. First mentioned in the records as early as 1363, the current form was built between 1449 and 1489 and is home to one of the oldest and most significant winged altars in the region, which dates back to 1440.
Further on along the trail, many curious sights bear witness to the influence of nature and time: Alongside scores of glacial erratics, the Casteldarne/Ehrenburg Giants are the stuff legends are made of, and legend has it that they used huge rocks to tear down Guggenschlössl Castle, leaving only its ruins as a reminder of wilder times. The ruins of Aschburg Castle, on the other hand, are the only remnants of the former hunting lodge used by the Schöneck hunting gentry. Past the Schiffereggerhof, you return to the starting point.

Starting right behind the Gasthof Bad Bergfall, follow the path Forstweg (Weg 32), first for a little while across two hairpin curves in direction west, then the path turns toward Sud, direction Langtal. From here you will reach soon a bridge that crosses the torrent on the right side. Now you can either go on on the left bank, or also cross the bridge and then turn right, so that you find yourself on the right bank. At an height of about 1700m, the ditch divides itself. Now you go up through the right side of the valley, across a declining forest. Later on the terrain will become flat again and you will be able to easily walk through a thinner forest and then reach the Jägershütte. From here the route goes on until the so-called Lapedurscharte (2200m). From here there is an uphill toward the Dreifingerspitze. From the crossroad you have to take the left for a light decline in order to reach, through a mild hill, the peak (2417 m).

Where the princesses took enchanted weapons built by the gnomes to win terrible monsters. Come and discover this world walking through the woods of San Vigilio along the path set up to tell this incredible story.

The new via ferrata "PIZ DA PERES", built for the 2022 summer, consists of three interesting sections with a difficulty rating C/D (difficult). The via ferrata is located in a favorable geographical position and offers very good accessibility, with short access routes and breathtaking panoramic views. While climbing the via ferrata, you will have an exclusive vantage point to admire the mountain ranges of the Dolomites, the Zillertal and the Rieserferner Alps. You will be able to experience a spectacular mountain adventure, surrounded by beautiful scenery.

On the marmot trail to Grünbachsee Lake and viewing the summit

Putzenhöhe (2441m) From easy to advanced Located on one of the many sun-spoilt hillsides of the Pustertal valley, the Moarhof mountain inn is an easy hour's walk from the Gelenke parking (1600 m). Fortified by a hearty meal at the restaurant, carry on to Lake Grünbach and to the Putzenhöhe peak if the weather is good and you feel in shape. The hike through these stunning winter landscapes is truly rewarding. From the peak, the views down into the Mühlwald valley and out into the glaciers of the central Alps will certainly take your breath away.

Tales and stories of Mount Kienberg

 With its 1222 m, Mount Kienberg stands out from its surroundings like an island. A plutonic rock formed during the creation of the Alps, it emerged from the heart of the earth only to be smoothed down by passing glaciers over the course of countless years. Today, Kienberg is a broad, rotund ridge shrouded in legends: The hike along the Kienberg trail from Casteldarne/Ehrenburg to Mantana/Montal runs past the Plattnerhof farm. Legend has it that once upon a time, it was the home of a stone-hearted man. One day, the farmer chased away a hungry beggar with nothing but insults and threats, upon which the beggar cursed the mountain, making all its springs run dry.
After a short break at the hamlet of Mantana/Montal, the hike runs back to Casteldarne/Ehrenburg along an old trail depicting the Stations of the Cross. Every year, pilgrims from Predoi/Prettau in the Aurina/Ahrntal valley flock here to ask the Madonna of the Grains to bless their home and livestock and to grant their fields favorable weather.
The highest point of the ridge is 1222 m above sea-level. This hike is ideal for those who love quiet trails far from the beaten track. Stop for a break at Gasthof Alpenrose (Mantana/Montal), Hofschenke Lerchner's (Ronchi/Runggen), or Gasthof Obermair.

From one end of the village, this 23 km track winds down into the Marebbe valley through the quiet forests and snow-covered mountain pastures of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, where the fresh air seems to glisten and the soothing tranquillity of the winter dominates the Dolomites. On many different routes (rings), cross-country skiing enthusiasts will find ideal skiing conditions as well as breath-taking surroundings and inviting mountain inns offering mouth-watering delicacies. Group lessons and individual lessons are available at the San Vigilio ski schools.

At the very heart of San Vigilio di Marebbe, close to the Aqua Bad Cortina Oasis Hotel, a beautiful cross-country slope sets off along the romantic Mareo valley all the way to the Pederü mountain inn. One glimpse of the picture-book winter landscapes and you won‘t be able to stop yourself from grabbing your skis and setting off into the White fields and forests, to relax far from the daily hustle and bustle. The slope is suitable for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. For all winter sports enthusiasts who wish to learn or improve their cross-country skiing, there are two ski schools in San Vigilio which offer both group lessons and individual lessons (p. 20). And of course you don‘t have to ski the whole 23 km of the slope: The track is arranged in a number of routes (rings) which allow you to return to San Vigilio at any time. Alternatively, you can catch a Mareobus and Citybus service to Pederü or to the football grounds (Skibus stop) and start skiing at different points of the slope. Use of the cross-country skiing slope is subject to a fee but free of charge for guests staying at a San Vigilio Tourist Office member facility!

 

The snowshoe hike to the Fanes pasture offers hikers unforgettable moments in the Nature Park Fanes-Senes-Braies, surrounded by rock faces and enchanted forests. Clear streams and ponds are hidden beneath the white blanket, visible only during snow-free winters. On arrival you will be welcomed by 2 alpine huts, which serve you tasty local dishes.

Fanes > Gran Fanes › Furcia Rossa (2791 m, H: 2 hours) › First follow the trail marked VB, then turn right after approx. 1.5 hours.

PÉ DE BÖRZ 1862 m – MONTEMURO 2332 m approx. 470 m | 2-2.5 hours Description: From the Pé de Börz car park on the road to Passo delle Erbe, take the forest trail to the Montemuro inn (closed in winter). From there, cross the ample ridge which leads to the peak. Easy hike to a safe peak with spectacular views.

Rural tradition and stunning landscapes

From Gisser Eck in San Sigismondo/St. Sigmund, this hike runs along a sun-spoilt hillside dotted with fascinating glimpses of farm life in the Pusteria/Pustertal valley. On a three-hour hike, this circular trail sets off from the valley bottom and leads through granite-ridden slopes to low mountain plateaus with spectacular views of dense pine forests firmly grappled into the hillside with their widely ramified, deep-reaching roots. Scattered across the glacier-shaped landscapes, quartz phyllite rocks and boulders stick out alongside a number of granite glacial erratics. Many lookout points offer inviting spots for a long break, admiring the panoramic views.
Chosen to describe the tradition each farmhouse was known for, the names of the many widely dispersed farmsteads tell an interesting tale: Decker-Hof is derived from Decke, the German word for blanket, while Perchner-Hof refers to a birch grove, Friesenbühel alludes to a frosty hill, Gatscher Hof describes a badly-cut forest clearance, Hitthaler-Hof is reminiscent of a valley of inns and mountain huts (Hüttental), and Neller-Hof is a shortened reference to the name Cornelius.
From Chienes/Kiens, the trail continues back to San Sigismondo/St. Sigmund through these quaint rural landscapes. There are a number of inns to take a well-deserved break at: Hotel Gassenwirt, Gasthof Pizzeria Petra, and Bonfanti Design Hotel.

Easy hike to one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the Pustertal valley, whose little church " Unserer Lieben Frau von Loreto" was built around the middle of the 17th century.

Culture and landscapes

Following the Rio Verde/Grünbach stream, this pleasant hike runs through a narrow gorge all the way up to Schöneck Castle, which towers proudly upon a rock protrusion. Not far from the castle, an extremely unusual columnar crown spruce "snakes" its way towards the skies – a tree so rare that this specimen has long been declared a natural monument. From the castle mound, an ancient pilgrims' trail takes the hiker to the small Gothic church of Hasenried, where a spring sanctuary is said to have once provided relief for pilgrims suffering from eye complaints. The route then continues on to Falzes/Pfalzen along the Pfaffensteig trail, passing through a rural landscape dotted with old stone walls, which offer a natural roadside barrier and a tempting spot for a quiet moment to catch your breath in a peaceful and utterly picturesque setting. They are a pretty reminder of the ancient skills and traditions formerly practiced in the many local stone masonry workshops, some of which can still be found in Falzes/Pfalzen, where granite is skillfully sculpted into works of art.
From the village center, hike past the sports grounds and follow the trail towards Irenberg and Lake Issengo/Issing. This small yet idyllic lake is a true paradise for nature lovers and an ideal place for a longer break. Just off the lake shores, the herb gardens of the Bergila Mountain Pine Oil Distillery are yet another natural gem, and the last leg of the route rewards its hikers with a scented spot in the shade, perfect for cooling down your weary feet in the Rio Verde/Grünbach stream.

The walk through the LandArt path is a simple, family-friendly hike through the forests of Falzes/Pfalzen. LandArt is art in nature and with nature - nature is its space. With various materials and techniques the artists create their unique works using what nature offers and integrating artistic notes. This art is temporary, exposed to the weather conditions and changes along with nature.

The stroll begins on Str. Fanes: Walk through the Pes-Pesc playground, then continue along the paved dirt road parallel to the cross-country skiing slope (pedestrians: please keep off the slope) until just before you reach the C´iamaor sports grounds. The forest trail will take you to C´iamaor (to the left of the football pitch). Having passed the C´iamaor bridge, keep left and continue along the picturesque trail past Horse Trekking Mareo until you get to Lé dla Creda.

Route: Right behind the Gasthof Bad Bergfall you go on on the on forestall way (path n. 32) for a little while over two hairpins (direction West), then the path turns toward Sud, in Langtal. From here you easily reach a bridge that leads right over a stream. Now you can either go on on the left side of the stream, or once crossed the bridge turn left so that you will find yourself on the right side of the stream. At an high of 1700 m the ditch divides. Now you go on on the right side of the valley uphill for a while through the forest. After a while the terrain becomes flat again and you can walk through a light section of forest and then arrive to the so-called Lapedurscharte (2200 m). Right before arriving to the path sign, you have to turn right and the toward West over a bump. After other bumps, you will reach without problems the crest – unfortunately you will loose 25 m of hight – without problems in the highest point with the cross. If you will not be satisfied, you can go on along the crest and reach the Piz da Peres (2057 m ).

From the peak station of the Cianross cable car at 1302 m, the Cianross sledging track winds down through the forest alongside the skiing slope all the way to the valley station at 1203 m. The 680 m track (99 m of difference in altitude) can be used during the Cianross cable car opening hours with ski passes and single or prepaid tickets with point systems. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the track will also be open between 8 and 10 pm and illuminated with floodlights. Sledges can be rented at the Cianross cable car valley station.

 

 

Horse Trekking Mareo with its good-natured Icelandic horses is the ideal starting point for a beautiful hack through the winter landscape. Full-moon hacks to the Fanes inn are available upon request – a unique adventure! Our Icelandic horse farm is located near the C´iamaor sports grounds at only 1 km from San Vigilio going towards Pederü

From the Rina sports grounds, a marked trail leads to the Munt da Rina/Welchellener Alm (catering facilities). The Munt da Rina mountain inn is open during the summer months. From there, you can hike on Col dal Lè all the way to the idyllic Lake Munt da Rina(Glittner See in German). Return along the same route.

 

The Pfunderer trail crosses the Grubbach group of Sterzing to Brunico and connects the Eisacktal with the Ahrntal-Valle Aurina high above the Pustertal-Val Pusteria. A good hike does it take to reach the summit of Sambock or the Plattner Spitz of palaces. Starting from the plates of the path, it leads through the forest and then to the alpine meadows. A little later, follow the markers of the Pfunderer altitude trail on the broad ridge towards Sambock (2398 m). On the summit of the peak Plattner (2439 m) to show the already known peaks of the Zillertal, Ötztal and Stubai Alps, the striking rock towers of the Dolomites. The descent offers the Plattner lakes again an impressive natural idyll, 2250 meters above sea level. Rhododendrons and other alpine flowers are true pleasures, for which you should take plenty of time. The finale of this impressive circular walk is the steep forest road before you reach the car park at the Staller animal farm again. Refreshments: Plattner Alm

Route: From the car park take the old army road up to Malga Piccolo Fanes. Up to the fork just before the Rifugio Fanes and the Rifugio Lavarella you can generally walk without snowshoes. At the fork turn right and climb across an altitude differential of approx. 100 m through the woods and across meadows (Parliament of marmots) to the plateau Plan de Serenes. From there you can see the peak of Col Toronn situated in front of the distinctive rock face of the Cima Nove. The level path leads westwards for approx. 500 m before becoming steeper, leading towards the Northwest to the ridge top that comes down from the peak of Col Toronn. Continue to climb to the right of the ridge top and in a left curve across easy terrain up to the highest point. Descent: Return by the same route to the Plan de Serenes plateau, then cross over to the South to the Rifugio Lavarella. Alternatively, return to the fork in the path and descend directly by the Rifugio Pederü.
