Can a province be Alpine and Mediterranean at the same time? Yes! And South Tyrol is a prime example. The vast, warm valleys, characterised by apples, wine and even palm trees, are Mediterranean. South Tyrol also has a wilder, more rugged, but equally impressive side: the distinctive Dolomites, the Alpine flora of the Texelgruppe Nature Park, and the province’s highest mountain, the Ortler. In between, there are high-Alpine pastures, deep valleys, earth pyramids, crystal clear lakes and roaring waterfalls. So much beauty must be protected. Seven nature parks and one national park are tasked with preserving the valuable landscape and with communicating knowledge about South Tyrol’s natural environment.
