What you shouldn’t miss out on in Bressanone

The top seven attractions

You only know Bressanone/Brixen when you’ve seen...

Bressanone is famous due to its long history as an ecclesiastical principality and “bishop's seat” – a past that is alive today in almost every corner of the city. A trip to Domplatz square is enough to prove this. A majestic building rises above the heart of the city, whose its facades reflect various architectural styles. From the Ottoman style of the 10th century, through to the Romanesque style of the 12th century (e.g. the cloister with its cross vault that is decorated with medieval paintings), and even the baroque of the 18th century, characterised by frescoes. The Bishop's Palace, the grand seat of the prince-bishop is today home to the Diocesan Museum Hofburg where the treasures of the cathedral and different sacred works of art, from Romanesque to the modern, are stored. Don’t miss out on a stroll through the city lanes and, in particular, those of the oldest and prettiest district of Stufels between the rivers Eisack and Rienz. Also of interest are the Pharmacy Museum, with its instruments, jars and receptacles that are a testament to the development of pharmacy in the last 400 years, and the Augustinian Canons' Abbey of Novacella, with its baroque church, historical gardens and valuable manuscripts in the library.
