Dolomites Region Odles - Lüsen and Villnöss

Nestled between the towering walls of the Dolomites lie two valleys where you can find true peace. In Lüsen and Villnöss, you stay far away from the noise. There are only a few lifts — yet you discover open landscapes and a farming culture woven into everyday life.

Both valleys implement concrete measures  in several areas.. The destination has achieved Level 3 of the South Tyrol Sustainability Label®, the highest level in the certification system.

The valleys generate electricity from their own hydropower. District heating plants use damaged wood harvested from the surrounding forests. On the alpine pastures, glass fiber cables replace noisy diesel generators. And in terms of mobility, well-timed connections allow guests and locals alike to travel by public transport.

By preserving traditional structures and ways of life, the valleys maintain close ties to the people who live here and their culture. As South Tyrol’s first Slow Food Travel Destination, Villnöss focuses on safeguarding traditional processing methods and local cooperation.. Lüsen shares this path. Here too, family farms and dedicated individuals are working together towards recognition as a Slow Food Travel Destination..

Hardly any traffic, no big hotels – instead, a close-knit community working together for their valley. In Villnöss, people work together to maintain the distincitve character of their home. As a Slow Food Travel Destination they have made their vision visible. Founded in 1986 to preserve local food traditions, the Slow Food movement has since become known around the world.

The Odles Slow Dolomites region is South Tyrol’s first Slow Food Travel Destination. People here maintain a close connection with their surroundings. Mountain huts, restaurants, and hotels focus on local ingredients and work with nearby producers. Two Slow Food Presidia – projects dedicated to preserving traditional foods and heritage breeds – call the valley home: the Villnösser Brillenschaf sheep and the hardy Tyrolean Grey cattle. The initiative brings people, products and traditional knowledge together and encourages exchange and cooperation within the valleys.
