Monasteries in South Tyrol

Culturally and historically significant monasteries from more than ten centuries are located in South Tyrol’s valleys and on its mountainsides. The histories of these magnificent buildings, with their cloisters, libraries, courtyards, gardens and parish churches, have been shaped by political disputes and conflicts between the aristocracy, clergy, farmers and the bourgeoisie. Nevertheless, many of South Tyrol’s cultural treasures have survived until today and await visitors in monasteries near Chiusa/Klausen or in Bressanone/Brixen, Merano/Meran, Bolzano/Bozen, or in the Vinschgau valley.
