A few minutes up to the top

Lift access to the mountains has a long-standing tradition in South Tyrol. The lift facilities today are suitably innovative and spectacular to reflect this.

Work began early on in South Tyrol to secure comfortable and safe access to the higher-altitude towns. The Kohlerer Seilbahn cable car began operation in 1908. This is one of three cable cars in total which links Bolzano/Bozen with the surrounding summer holiday resorts. The second cable car was installed in 1912 from Lana to the Vigiljoch pass. This is still operating today. A great deal has happened since then.

“A cable car can be beautiful”, says Arch. Arno Gapp who designed a glass cube for the cable car from Latsch/Laces to St. Martin im Kofel/San Martino al Monte.

How to reach the following places

Currently, there are no traffic restrictions for the Braies Valley – except for the toll road to Prato Piazza. No online booking is required to access the area. However, please note that the area is still very popular, so we recommend arriving outside peak hours.

Lake Braies is currently accessible at any time. No online reservation is needed to enter the Braies Valley.

Looking for a comfortable and sustainable way to travel? Public bus line 443 takes you directly to Prato Piazza from Monguelfo and Dobbiaco/Villabassa. No reservation needed. Südtirolmobil tickets and the Südtirol Guest Pass are valid on this route.

The toll road to the Three Peaks is closed during winter.

For those arriving from outside Sesto, we recommend using public bus lines 440 and 446. Both südtirolmobil tickets and the Südtirol Guest Pass are valid on these lines.

Lake Anterselva is easy to reach by public transport. In winter, it offers a special experience: when the lake is frozen, you can walk or ski across the ice. The ice thickness is monitored regularly and access is only permitted when it is deemed safe. For current information, check here.

The Dolomite passes are closed to road traffic in winter. But you can still experience them – on skis, and in a truly impressive way. The ski resorts are easily accessible by public transport.

So geht’s zum Karer See

Car-free experience on the Dolomite passes

In addition to being popular destinations, the Dolomite passes are also starting points for experiencing this unique landscape of the Dolomites. The best way to do so is without a car: You can explore the passes in a sustainable way by walking, cycling, taking the cable car or public transport and enjoy the Dolomites for many years to come.
