Pedaling the Peaks: Road Bike Route to Cauria/Gfrill

This demanding road bike tour takes you from Auer/Ora, Neumarkt/Egna or Salurn/Salorno up to the mountain hamlet of Gfrill/Cauria, perched above the Adige Valley. Covering approx. 52 km and 1,240 meters of elevation gain, the route combines steep climbs, cultural highlights and magnificent alpine views – perfect for well-trained riders seeking a true South Tyrolean challenge.
Itinerary
Depending on your location, you can start in Auer/Ora, Neumarkt/Egna or Salurn/Salorno. From Auer/Ora, follow the Palainstreet onto the Adige Cycle Path heading south. From Neumarkt/Egna, take Bahnhofstraße to the same path. In Salurn/Salorno, pass through the historic centre before the climb begins. The road rises steeply toward Buchholz/Pochi (563 m) and continues through forests and farmland to Gfrill/Cauria at 1,330 m. The return follows the same route, with a detour before Salurn/Salorno toward Laag/Laghetti and back through apple orchards to the Adige path.

Details

This is a demanding tour with steep climbs and technical sections. A helmet is a must. Be cautious in traffic, especially on narrow mountain roads. Bright clothing and a visible rear light are recommended.

Recommended: a well-maintained road bike with climbing gears, helmet, repair kit, bottle, gloves, windbreaker, and optional GPS or printed map.

 

Take time to explore Salurn/Salorno, known for its Renaissance and Baroque buildings and its historical ties to figures like Napoleon and Albrecht Dürer. In Gfrill/Cauria, enjoy the peace and incredible views – plus a traditional meal in one of the local inns, far from the tourist crowds.

Frequent regional trains and buses serve Auer/Ora, Neumarkt/Egna and Salurn/Salorno. Bikes are permitted with a valid bicycle ticket. With the Südtirols Süden Card, public transport is free (bike not included).

Directions
All three towns – Auer/Ora, Neumarkt/Egna and Salurn/Salorno – are accessible via the A22 motorway (exit Egna/Ora) or regional trains running between Bolzano/Bozen and Trento.
Parking
Public parking is available near the train stations and town centres. On weekends, early arrival is recommended.
