Join us for a journey into the industrial past of Prad am Stilfserjoch – the historic lime kiln in Schmelz tells stories of hard work, craftsmanship, and local history at the foot of the Stelvio Pass. Once used to produce quicklime for construction and agriculture, the intricately built kiln is now the last preserved structure of its kind in the Vinschgau Valley and was carefully restored in 2025. As a walk-in heritage site, the kiln offers fascinating insights into the region’s artisanal, mining, and early industrial history. In July and August, we open the doors to this special site and invite you on an exciting journey through nature, technology, and tradition. Visit one of the oldest preserved churches in Europe. The small church of St Benedict from the 8th century AD has Carolingian wall paintings inside, which are among the oldest frescoes in Western Europe. A building from the 8th century. The church harbours the world's only portrait of a Frankish landlord. In addition to the permanent exhibitions ‘The discovery of Ötzi’ and ‘Primitive? Skilled!’, the archeoParc in Madonna di Senales presents a small photo exhibition every year in the museum’s cafeteria. This year’s edition features works by the young hunter Simone Santer: photographs of animals, plants, and landscapes. In addition to the permanent exhibitions ‘The Ötzi Find’ and ‘Flora, Fauna, Man’, the archeoParc in Unser Frau presents a small special exhibition every year. This year's edition is called ‘Glaciers and Me’ and is dedicated to two artistic positions on the topic to mark the Year of Glaciers: paintings by Jessie Pitt (Melbourne/Längenfeld) and photographs by Daniela Brugger (Karthaus) together with texts by glaciologist Georg Kaser (Karthaus) invite visitors to discover and reflect. The Carthusian monastery of Allerengelberg was located in Karthaus from 1326 to 1782. It was abandoned under Emperor Joseph II, but the spirit of the monks lives on in the cloisters. During the tour of the monastery, participants are shown the art-historical and architectural features and introduced to the way the Carthusian monks lived and worked. Our tour begins with a ride on the cable car to the Grawand at 3,212 metres. From here, we reach the Iceman Ötzi Peak viewing platform and a unique work of art by Olafur Eliasson. During the descent along the glacier, with views of turquoise glacial lakes, we learn a lot of historical facts about the construction of the cable car to the Grawand, which was opened 50 years ago. The descent finally ends at the Teufelsegg hut, from where we take the Roter Kofel chairlift back down to the valley in comfort. The little church is famous for its coffered ceiling from the 16th century, which depicts a jester in a washtub. The nave has a flat roof and slit windows. The semi-circular vaulted apse contains frescoes from the 13th century, including a well-preserved fresco of Christ in the mandorla.
