Summer holidays at altitude amidst nature, tranquillity and well-being

Leave the heat of the city behind and take a deep breath in the refreshing Alpine air. With crystal-clear lakes, silent forests and pure mountain air, South Tyrol is the perfect place to slow down and recharge.

Imagine a summer far from the heat, among shady forests, alpine lakes and quiet trails. A coolcation is the new way to enjoy a refreshing holiday: rejuvenating, simple, free from excess. A return to the pleasure of slowing down—just like mountain guests used to do in the past. In South Tyrol, the tradition of spending the summer at altitude runs deep. It’s inspired by the so-called Sommerfrische of the late 19th century: the Alpine retreat loved by nobles and bourgeois families in search of clean air, tranquillity and nature. Now, just as then, the coolness of the mountains is the best answer to summer heat.

5 benefits of a cool summer holiday in South Tyrol

  1. Pleasant temperatures even in the summer
Far from the sweltering heat: mild days and cool nights, perfect for sleeping well and enjoying the outdoors without suffering from the heat.

  2. Pure nature and wide-open spaces
Nature parks, lakes, trails and peaks above 1,000 metres: the mountains offer fresh air, silence and panoramic views that clear your mind.

  3. A slower pace and natural well-being
Walks, dips in mountain streams, yoga at altitude or simply relaxing in the shade.

  4. Sustainable and stress-free mobility
Cable cars, trains and public transport included in the Südtirol Guest Pass take you into the mountains without the need to drive.

  5. Alpine tradition and authenticity
From historic towns at altitude to some of Italy’s most beautiful villages: each place tells its own story, with culture, flavours and a sense of true holiday spirit.

The power of water

In South Tyrol, water is pure energy. At the Partschins Falls, the air is charged with 10,000 negative ions per cm³, boosting vitality and well-being. The Barbian waterfalls offer a hike through forests and cascades that refresh both body and mind. In Sand in Taufers/Campo Tures, the Reinbach Waterfalls flow along a trail immersed in nature. The small lake Völser Weiher, surrounded by woods, is perfect for a swim and relaxation. Nestled in the Dolomites, the Lake of Dobbiaco is ideal for peaceful walks and moments of silence. At 1,600 metres, Lake Antholz offers fresh air and breathtaking views. Don’t miss a refreshing swim in Lake Göller near Aldein/Aldino or the Wolfsgruben bathing lake on the Ritten Plateau.

Caves and mines

Have you ever taken a deep breath in the heart of the mountain? At the climate gallery Prettau, you enter a gallery where the air is pure—free from pollen and allergens. Absolute silence, deep breathing: a natural therapy for body and mind. In the mine of Schneeberg, the highest in Europe, you walk through tunnels dug out over the centuries at more than 2,300 metres. In Ridanna, the sound of machinery still echoes: experience mining like a real worker. The Villanders mine will surprise you with its underground passages and stories from the past. Beneath the earth, coolness is guaranteed. And interesting discovieries, too.

Eternal glaciers

In South Tyrol, glaciers tell the story of the mountains and offer spectacular trails filled with nature and cool air. In Val Senales, where Ötzi—the Iceman—was found, you can follow his path along high-altitude trails and visit the archeoParc in the Schnalstal Valley. In Val Martello, the Glacier Trail leads across moraines and rocky slopes, with info panels explaining the power of ice. The Solda Glacier Trail takes you even higher, through landscapes sculpted by glaciers at the foot of the Gran Zebrù and Ortles. For ski enthusiasts, snow is guaranteed and lifts stay open in Solda and the Schnalstal Valley for the long ski season from May to November.

Did you know that over

40%

of South Tyrol’s territory lies above 1,500 metres? Here, coolness isn’t a coincidence – it’s geography.

Where can you stay cool in the summer in South Tyrol?

At higher altitudes, the air is cleaner, breathing comes easier and summer flows slowly through forests, trails and mountain views. At 907 metres above sea level, Glurns/Glorenza is the smallest town in South Tyrol and one of the most charming in Italy. Within its intact medieval walls, you’ll find peace, elegance and a mild summer climate: in July and August, the average daytime temperature is around 18–20°C. Stroll through cobbled alleys, discover the art of Paul Flora, the modern architecture of Werner Tscholl and enjoy traditional foods like the Pala pear.
At 948 metres, Sterzing/Vipiteno is the northernmost town in Italy. Here, mountain living comes with style: fresh air and average summer temperatures between 17 and 21°C, walks through castles like Reifenstein Castle and Castel Sprechenstein, historic facades and typical South Tyrolean dishes to savour.

Ahrntal/Valle Aurina

The Ahrntal Valley is one of the most authentic valleys in South Tyrol—perfect for those seeking a cool and quiet summer. With over 80 peaks rising above 3,000 metres, a coolcation here means walking in freedom, breathing pure mountain air and letting yourself be amazed by unspoiled nature.
