The Marmot Trail above Hofern/Corti is a varied family hiking trail combining nature, wildlife watching and exciting educational stations. The starting point is the Gelenke car park, located at around 1,600 m. Along the themed trail, Merlin the “bear” accompanies young and old hikers, sharing interesting facts about the life of marmots in the Pfunderer Mountains/Monti di Fundres.
The route initially follows a pleasant forest road through the alpine pasture landscape to the Moarhofalm/Malga Moarhof at 1,833 m, where refreshments are available. Up to this point, the trail is suitable for pushchairs, making it particularly suitable for families with small children. Above the Moarhofalm/Malga Moarhof, the hike continues on narrower hiking trails and alpine paths towards the Grünbachsee/Lago Verde. From this point onwards, the route is no longer suitable for pushchairs.
Several interactive stations along the way invite visitors to discover the world of marmots in a fun and engaging way. From the Moarhofalm/Malga Moarhof, the trail continues towards the Grünbachalmen/Malghe Grünbach. Shortly before the Obere Grünbachalm/Malga Grünbach Superiore, the route leaves the forest road and follows the marked hiking trail through alpine meadows and the impressive mountain landscape of the Pfunderer Mountains/Monti di Fundres to the idyllic Grünbachsee/Lago Verde at 2,257 m. Surrounded by gentle mountain slopes, the small alpine lake is an ideal place to stop and enjoy the natural surroundings.
With a little luck, you may spot numerous marmots along the trail, often announcing their presence with their characteristic warning whistles. During the summer months in particular, blooming alpine roses and the varied alpine flora create an impressive natural experience.
Apart from a few possible shortcuts, the return follows the same route back to the Gelenke car park. The combination of a family-friendly trail, exciting interactive stations, refreshments at the Moarhofalm/Malga Moarhof and the picturesque Grünbachsee/Lago Verde makes the Marmot Trail a popular excursion for the whole family.
