Virtual Study Tour: Visitor Management in Iceland’s Iconic Landscapes
    Welschnofen/Nova Levante, Dolomites Region Eggental
This free webinar marks the conclusion of our 2025 virtual study tour, organized within the framework of the South Tyrolean Working Group of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Tourism Associations by the Provincial Department for Nature, Landscape and Spatial Development – “UNESCO” section – and IDM South Tyrol. After inspiring stops in the Canary Islands and Mauritius, the final stage takes us to Iceland – a land shaped by volcanism, glaciers, and vast open plains. At the center stands Thingvellir National Park, Iceland’s most visited protected area – and a site with its own unique challenges. Our keynote speaker, Einar Á.E. Sæmundsen, Director of the National Park, will share insights into visitor management strategies, infrastructure measures, and communication with guests. Particularly fascinating is the role of rangers as mediators between nature and the public. The park faces issues familiar to many protected areas in the Alps: highly concentrated visitor flows, limited trail networks, and increasing pressure from cruise tourism. Proximity to Reykjavík makes Thingvellir both highly accessible and especially sensitive. A key topic of the webinar is visitor safety. Many travelers are unaware of the challenges this special natural environment presents, often arrive poorly prepared, and overlook important guidance. Park management addresses these issues through education, clear infrastructure, and strategic planning. Following the presentation, a moderated discussion will provide space for questions and exchange – a perfect opportunity to draw parallels with the Dolomites and learn from one another. You can look forward to: Einar Á.E. Sæmundsen – Director of Thingvellir National Park, expert in visitor management, communication, and protected area governance Marcella Morandini – Special Delegate of the Department for Nature, Landscape and Spatial Development, Autonomous Province of Bolzano – “UNESCO” section 👉 Register by November 11, 2025

in Italian: Stepmother languages. The lie of bilingualism in South Tyrol
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs
Event in collaboration with Alphabeta. Free entry. South Tyrol is said to be a bilingual region. However, behind this apparent truth lie uncertainties and mental barriers that paint a very different picture. The question posed by a South Tyrolean – ‘Why should I learn the language of the other?’ – not only remains unanswered, but is no longer even asked. Is this merely sluggish indifference or a deeper symptom that reveals the weaknesses of a model of coexistence that has never been fully realised? In a perfect synthesis of essay and journalistic reportage, Gabriele Di Luca deconstructs the myth of bilingualism using ‘scenes’ from everyday life: the official bilingualism exam (the notorious ‘driving licence’), public administration, school, hospital, bar, provincial parliament, newspapers, the internet, social media. The result is a faithful, ironic and provocative portrait of Italy's northernmost province, which Italians still only know as a tourist destination.

Culture as a Commons Museion Academy – Internationales Symposium
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
How can cultural institutions or initiatives convert their social responsibility into effective, lasting impact – beyond symbolic gestures – in the face of accelerating ecological, social, and political transformations? And crucially: who participates in defining this mandate? These urgent questions lie at the heart of Culture as a Commons, a three-day international forum that brings together 12 selected cultural initiatives from the Netherlands and Italy. In the framework of this gathering at Museion, they will open up and share best practice strategies, visions, and formats beyond institutional boundaries, exploring culture as a common good – as a space of “commoning”. Rather than codifying fixed answers, the forum seeks to uncover both potential and limitations in current cultural work, through foregrounding experimental formats, porous collaborations, and gentle forms of activism. It encourages situated, responsive strategies to address challenges of social relevance, participation, and sustainability, including those raised in the 2022 redefinition of the museum by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). True to its spirit, this particular symposium represents a commons itself: it is participatory, publicly accessible, and invites cultural practitioners from diverse backgrounds – as well as everyone who sees culture as an inclusive and collective practice and a catalyst for social change – to engage, exchange, and reflect. The program will include not only discussions and workshops but also moments of shared experience, care, and wellbeing – dancing included.
