Racing Bike Tour to the Timmelsjoch Mountain Pass

You start your road cycling tour in the village centre of St. Leonhard in Passeier (approx. 680 m) and join the Timmelsjoch road (SS 44bis). The first few kilometres to get warmed up take you into the valley with a moderate gradient through Hinterpasseiertal Valley.

After about 7 kilometres, you reach Moos in Passeier (1,007 m). From here, the gradient noticeably increases and the road winds uphill through the first more pronounced hairpin bends. You pass the turn-off to Rabenstein and ride through several avalanche galleries and short tunnels (tip: lights on your road bike are strongly recommended!) until you reach Schönau inn (1,720 m), where the route briefly becomes a little flatter.

From the nearby Timmelsbrücke Bridge, the gradient increases again. You pass Hochfirst inn (1,820 m) and head directly towards the demanding final climb: through spectacular hairpin bends built into the rock, you quickly gain altitude. The landscape becomes increasingly alpine, with trees giving way to barren rock formations and alpine meadows.

After about 6.5 kilometres and 600 metres of elevation gain from Hochfirst inn, you finally reach a longer tunnel. For the final 2 kilometres, you continue without any significant gradient and through two more short tunnels to Timmelsjoch at 2,474 m.

From there, the route either continues across the border into the Austrian Ötztal or follows the same route back down into the Passeiertal Valley.
