At an elevation of 1,100 meters, high above Alto Adige’s bustling capital of Bolzano, a different rhythm, a different perception of time and nature still prevails on the Ritten Plateau. That wonderful feeling of yesteryear is still alive and well up here, far removed from the hectic pace of everyday life in the valley. The plateau was a summer retreat for writers, artists and aristocrats back in the good ol’ days; these days, it is mostly nature lovers who come in search of tranquility and an opportunity to escape. The family-run Chalet Grumer Suites & Spa welcomes guests in South Tyrol to a spectacular, secluded location on the edge of the forest: the position is well shielded by rocks and offers incomparable vistas of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Dolomites. Having transformed into a refuge for downshifters, connoisseurs and individual travelers only recently, this modern country house looks back on a long history. In fact, its sturdy walls of natural stone are a vivid reminder of its beginnings as a farm over 700 years ago. This chalet, which manages to be down-to-earth and exceptional at the same time, melds almost seamlessly into its bewitching setting, where the sounds of cattle bells fill the air and the cable car placidly floats through the background. Inspired by the lush meadows, the fragrant forest, the sweeping summit panorama and his own childhood within these protective walls, the young owner, Philip Benincà, has fashioned his parents’ house into a welcoming, wholly private haven. Philip and his partner Alexandra both care passionately about the wellbeing of all those who come to Chalet Grumer in Alto Adige. It is with genuine joy that the couple makes every stay as comfortable and carefree as possible.
