Take a break and relinquish the daily humdrum – at least for a while: the small town of Schenna has several beauty spots to offer. Some of them, so-called places of power, radiate a special energy. Just south of Schenna above the sprawling apple orchards, you’ll find an energy spot – the Kampfl-Kreuz. The solitary bench perched on a granite rock invites hikers to stop and rest, while contemplating the stunning mountain panorama from this vantage point. The Kampfl-Kreuz vantage point can also be visited as part of a circular hike on the Wiesenweg meadow trail. In springtime, when the Kampfl-Kreuz is surrounded by blossoming apple trees, the scenery becomes even more inspirational.

In the centre of Schenna lies the Church Hill, notable for its three churches. Dating from the Carolingian era, the 12th Century St. Martin's Church amidst the cemetery is the oldest of them all. With two naves, each with a rounded apse and two centrally positioned octagonal pillars, it is used as a mortuary chapel. A little to the east of St. Martin's Church lies the 13th Century Church of the Assumption of Mary, the so-called “old parish church”. Completely rebuilt in the 16th Century in its existing Romanesque style, the church hosts religious services for small congregations, as well as functions such as baptisms and weddings. The more recent Schenna neo-Gothic parish church was built between 1914 – 1931, while the adjacent mausoleum was built for Archduke Johann and his consort in the years 1860 – 1869.
We offer you exclusive handmade jewelry with rare precious stones and pearls, watches as well as silver and steel jewelry of the leading brands. Jewelry cleaning, reparations of all kinds.
The Lido Schenna/Scena is a welcome cool-down in summer, a benefit for body, mind and soul. The view over the Merano/Meran valley basin gives you the feeling of a wide open space. A large sunbathing lawn, a swimming pool for adults and one for children, a water slide, a whirlpool, 4 bowling alleys and 2 tennis courts await you here.
The Innerleiterhof shop offers fine wines and regional specialties. Surrounded by vineyards, visitors can enjoy the products in a relaxed atmosphere and experience the authenticity of South Tyrol.
The mausoleum was built between 1860 and 1869 according to the plans of the Vienna architect professor Moritz Wappler, as a burial place for Archduke Johann of Austria and his family. The church is situated on an artificial terrace at the western edge of the church hill and is one of the earliest and without doubt the most successful sacred building in the Neo-Gothic style. The building was constructed of red sandstone and granite from the Ifinger region. In the underground crypt chapel with its heavy ribbed vaults, there is the marble sarcophagus of Archduke Johann and his wife.
The mausoleum can only be visited with a guided tour; please arrive punctually at 9:30 AM!
During the 12th and 13th Centuries, this church was rebuilt in Roman style and again fully redesigned during the 16th Century. Since then, little has been changed. The Baroque high altar with the statues of Saint Franz Xaver and Johann Nepomuk was built around 1730 and redesigned in 1819. Apart from the four altars in the church, there are a number of valuable individual sculptures such as the late-Gothic Saint Sebastian and the Baroque Saint John the Baptist. The cross stations originate from the middle of the 18th Century. During the restoration work carried out in 1975, some beautiful old frescoes were discovered and the statues were skilfully restored. John’s chapel, which was extended toward the South-East, brought to light some very well kept frescoes from the 14th Century. These were found during the renovation work of the 80s. The frescoes show scenes from the legends about John and Pankraz, as well as the wise and the foolish virgins, the evangelists, angel choirs and other pictures of saints. Since the completion of the new parish church in 1931, it has been used for another purpose, rather than its originally intended goal. It has served as a store room and a practice room for the choir. In March 1981, the church was reopened and once more consecrated. Today, it offers a great framework for religious services and devotions in small circles and weddings. Just across the road, in the sexton’s house, there is a marble relief as part of a wall, which shows the coronation of Mary, which was created during the 14th Century.

Rules that dog-owners must abide by
To enjoy a perfect holiday in Schenna with your dog, there are inevitably a few important rules that you need to follow. A valid EU pet passport is required, showing that your dog is vaccinated against rabies. The certificate must also show that vaccination took place at least 21 days prior to arrival. Furthermore, each dog needs a microchip for individual identification.
For dogs registered before 3 July 2011, a clearly legible tattoo is sufficient. Puppies less than three months old and without anti-rabies vaccination are not allowed into Italy.
When required, dogs must be kept on a leash with a muzzle must always at hand if needed.
Don't forget: in Italy, as elsewhere, dog owners are obliged to properly dispose of their doggie poo. In Schenna, this is made easier thanks to the ubiquitous ROBIDOG dog waste disposal bins.
