Currently, closures are planned on several key railway lines that could affect your travels:

 

These construction works are necessary to make the infrastructure safer and more efficient, so your journeys can be even more pleasant in the future. On our website, you’ll find all the information you need to plan your trip in advance.

 

Important notes:

The Südtirol Guest Pass is valid on the replacement bus services. You need to validate it at the train station or on the bus. Due to limited space, taking your bicycle on these routes is not possible.

Pustertal/Val Pusteria railway line

A replacement bus service is guaranteed on the affected sections

There will be temporary disruptions to rail services between Bruneck and Innichen in spring 2026:

  • Bruneck – Innichen: The railway section will be closed from March 30 to April 28, 2026 inclusive. The reason is preparatory work for upgrading the line with the European Train Control System (ETCS). At the same time, additional maintenance work will be carried out along the route.
 
  • Innichen – Lienz: The rail connection will be suspended from April 6 to April 26, 2026 inclusive.

 

Please note when planning your journey: bicycles cannot be transported on the rail replacement services. Due to the switch to bus services, travel times may differ.

Useful information on the closure of the railway line in Pustertal Valley

The construction work on the Pustertal/Val Pusteria railway is necessary to upgrade the line with the European Train Control System (ETCS)

Yes, during the closure of the Pustertal/Val Pusteria railway, a replacement bus service will be provided. The Südtirol Guest Pass is valid on all rail replacement services.

During the construction works, buses will provide alternative connections:

  • Bruneck – Innichen: rail replacement service every 30 minutes on line B500
 
  • Innichen – Lienz: rail replacement service every hour on line LV223, operated by ÖBB

To keep travel times as short as possible, the replacement buses will not stop at all stations along the route.

Bicycle transport: Bicycles cannot be taken on the replacement buses.

A valid train ticket is also valid for the rail replacement service. Tickets can also be purchased via the Südtirol Mobil site and the App Südtirolmobil

Even though bike transport isn’t possible on the replacement buses, you don’t have to give up your ride. A cycling tour through the landscapes of the Pustertal valley is always a special experience. Want to travel comfortably and safely? Just call one of the taxis equipped for transporting both bikes and cyclists.

Vinschger Bahn railway line

Rail replacement service between Laas/Lasa - Mals/Malles route

From March 29, 2026, the Vinschgau railway will gradually resume operations on the Merano – Lasa section. Initially, there will be hourly services. Please note: on the Lasa – Malles section, only a limited number of services will run at first, in the morning and evening. You can find the detailed timetables here.

The rail replacement service between Merano and Malles will remain in operation. The Südtirol Guest Pass is valid on the replacement services. Validation at the station or on the bus is required.

Useful information on the closure of the Vinschger Bahn railway line

  • From 29 March, operations on the section between Merano and Lasa will resume, initially with hourly services.
  • On the section between Lasa and Malles, there will initially be only a few services in the morning and evening.

Yes, a replacement bus service will be provided during the closure.

The stops of this replacement service are mostly located in town centers and not always directly at the train stations.

Important note: Please pay attention to the destination signs on the buses — the replacement service is supplemented by school buses that may head to different final stops.

A valid train ticket is also valid for the rail replacement service. Tickets can also be purchased via the Südtirol Mobil site and the App Südtirolmobil.

The closure is necessary in order to  complete the electrification works, dismantle the old train safety system and install the new system.  In addition , the new electrified railway line and the new rolling stock must be tested and approved.

It is not possible to transport bicycles on the replacement buses. However, the BikeLiner shuttle service allows you to transport your bike from 18 April to 4 October 2026 from Merano to Malles.

Road traffic disruptions

To ensure a safer and more efficient road network, important work is being carried out on the Reschenpass/Passo Resia road and the Lueg bridge (on the Austrian side of the Brenner/Brennero motorway). During temporary road closures, traffic management plans will minimise any disruption.
