Current information about your train journeys in South Tyrol

All information about the planned closures along the Vinschgau railway lines

Currently, closures are planned on several key railway lines that could affect your travels:

These construction works are necessary to make the infrastructure safer and more efficient, so your journeys can be even more pleasant in the future. On our website, you’ll find all the information you need to plan your trip in advance.

Important notes:

The Südtirol Guest Pass is valid on the replacement bus services. You need to validate it at the train station or on the bus. Due to limited space, taking your bicycle on these routes is not possible.

Vinschger Bahn railway line

Rail replacement service between Laas/Lasa - Mals/Malles route

From 26 October 2025 until 29 March 2026, the entire section between Merano and Mals will remain closed. The closure is due to electrification works and the testing and approval procedures both for the new electrified railway line and for the new trains. A replacement bus service has been established. The Südtirol Guest Pass is valid on the replacement bus service. Validation at the train station or on the bus is required.

Once the works are completed, the new Vinschgau railway will offer considerable advantages for all travelers. From late December 2026 there will be a direct connection from Mals to Innsbruck without transfer. Moreover, the new train sets are more comfortable and offer about 800 seats and standing places — more than twice as many as before.

Useful information on the closure of the Vinschger Bahn railway line

Since February 2025, the section between Mals and Laas has been closed. From 26 October 2025, the closure will extend to the entire route up to Merano.

The section from Mals to Merano will be closed from 26 October 2025 to 29 March 2026.

Yes, a replacement bus service will be provided during the closure.

The stops of this replacement service are mostly located in town centers and not always directly at the train stations.

Exception: Marling station will not be served by the replacement service, but can be reached from Merano via line 212.

Important note: Please pay attention to the destination signs on the buses — the replacement service is supplemented by school buses that may head to different final stops.

You can download the exact timetable for the replacement bus service here:

A valid train ticket is also valid for the rail replacement service. Tickets can also be purchased via the Südtirol Mobil site and the App Südtirolmobil.

The closure is necessary in order to  complete the electrification works, dismantle the old train safety system and install the new system.  In addition , the new electrified railway line and the new rolling stock must be tested and approved.

After completion in December 2026, there will be a direct connection from Mals to Innsbruck. The new trains will offer around 800 seats and standing places, compared to the previous 300.

Yes, the Südtirol Guest Pass is also valid for all buses in the rail replacement service. Validation at the station or on the bus is required.

To organise your journey in the best possible way and avoid any inconveniences, please visit the official site Südtirol Mobil, where you will find up-to-date information.

It is not possible to transport bicycles on the replacement buses, but the BikeLiner shuttle service allows you to transport your bike from Merano to Malles between 28 June and 25 October 2025.

Road traffic disruptions

To ensure a safer and more efficient road network, important work is being carried out on the Reschenpass/Passo Resia road and the Lueg bridge (on the Austrian side of the Brenner/Brennero motorway). During temporary road closures, traffic management plans will minimise any disruption.
