Vinschger Bahn railway line

Rail replacement service between Laas/Lasa - Mals/Malles route

Until 25 October 2025, the Vinschger Bahn railway line between Mals/Malles and Laas/Lasa will be closed for modernisation work. Starting on 26 October 2025 and continuing until approximately the end of March 2026, the entire route between Meran/Merano and Mals/Malles will be closed.

This closure is necessary due to electrification works, as well as testing and approval procedures for both the new electrified line and the new trainsets. A rail replacement service will be provided. The exact timetable will be announced in advance.

This service is valid with the South Tyrol Guest Pass. Please make sure to validate the pass either at the station or on the bus.

Once the work is completed in spring 2026, the upgraded Vinschger Bahn railway will offer significant improvements for all travellers: a direct connection from Mals/Malles to Bolzano/Bozen without needing to change trains, and half-hourly service. The new trains will also be more spacious and comfortable, with capacity for around 800 passengers, more than double the previous amount.

Useful information on the closure of the Vinschger Bahn railway line

Since February 2025, the route between Mals/Malles and Laas/Lasa has been closed for approximately one year. From 26 October 2025, the closure will be extended to cover the entire route as far as Meran/Merano.

The exact duration of the closure has not yet been determined; it is expected to last from 26 October 2025 to the  end of March 2026.

Yes, there is a rail replacement service during the closure.

You can download the exact timetable for the rail replacement service here.

A valid train ticket is also valid for the rail replacement service. Tickets can also be purchased via the Südtirol Mobil site and the App Südtirolmobil.

The closure is necessary in order to  complete the electrification works, dismantle the old train safety system and install the new system.  In addition , the new electrified railway line and the new rolling stock must be tested and approved.

After completion, there will be a direct connection from Mals/Malles to Bozen/Bolzano without changing trains in Meran/Merano. In addition, trains will run every half hour in future. The new rolling stock offers around 800  seats and places to stand instead of the previous 300.

Yes, the Südtirol Guest Pass is also valid for all buses in the rail replacement service. Validation at the station or on the bus is required.

To organise your journey in the best possible way and avoid any inconveniences, please visit the official site Südtirol Mobil, where you will find up-to-date information.

It is not possible to transport bicycles on the replacement buses, but the BikeLiner shuttle service allows you to transport your bike from Merano to Malles between 28 June and 25 October 2025.

The BikeLiner shuttle departs from Merano train station (bus stop, platform B) at 9:10, 10:10, 15:10 and 16:10. The bus stops only for disembarking at the stations in Naturno, Laces, Silandro, Spondigna and Malles. Boarding at intermediate stops is not possible.

Each journey offers 14 bicycle spaces (including for e-bikes), 12 of which can be reserved. Priority is given as follows: cyclists with a reservation, cyclists without a reservation (subject to availability), and passengers without bicycles (only if space is available).

Please arrive at platform B at Merano station at least 15 minutes before departure to help with loading and avoid delays. If you arrive late, your reservation will be forfeited.

In addition to the regular ticket, a bike day pass costing 7 euros is required – available at südtirolmobil ticket machines or via the app (must be purchased before boarding).

Reserve your seat and your bike space here by 6:00 pm the day before at the latest.

Road traffic disruptions

To ensure a safer and more efficient road network, important work is being carried out on the Reschenpass/Passo Resia road and the Lueg bridge (on the Austrian side of the Brenner/Brennero motorway). During temporary road closures, traffic management plans will minimise any disruption.
