With a second concert in the evening, the students of the Gustav Mahler Academy continue their stylistic exploration of Brahms's chamber music at the Palazzo Mercantile — performed on gut strings, with the support of quartet players Volker Jacobsen (Artemis Quartett) and Stefan Arzberger (Leipziger Streichquartett), cellist-conductors Bruno Weinmeister and Philipp von Steinaecker, and musicologist Clive Brown, the leading authority on Brahms performance practice.
Brahms's third and final string quartet — in B-flat major, op. 67 — is paired with Leoš Janáček's wind sextet Mládí (Youth), composed in 1924. With its rhythmic energy, modal sonority and the Czech composer's unmistakable melodic language, the work adds a Central European perspective of the era to the programme.
Programme:
Leoš Janáček – Mládí (Youth), wind sextet
Johannes Brahms – String Quartet in B-flat major, op. 67
