La Ferata – The old railway line featuring Bronze Sculptures and Snow Depths
    Urtijëi/Ortisei, Dolomites Region Val Gardena

The Val Gardena railway trail runs along the entire length of the valley and takes you past woods, meadows, hamlets and local sights on the sunny side of the valley. Choose between Ortisei (St. Ulrich), S. Cristina and Selva (Wolkenstein) as your starting point. The walk follows the course of the former Val Gardena railway, which was built during the First World War – in the years 1915-1916.

On a section of the path you will find a number of bronze sculptures by local artists. These give walkers and hikers an insight into the fascinating history of art in the Gardena Valley.

Along the railway line trail from La Poza towards S. Cristina there is a snow gauge, which measures the amount of snowfall for the period from 1951 to the present day.

    Hafling/Avelengo, Meran/Merano and environs

The 500 m long climb is perfectly secured with 1.000 m of steel cable and it is rated at medium difficulty (A – B – in some places B/C). Nevertheless, the last part of the via ferrata, the so-called Angel’s edge, presents a very impressive rock passage.

    Vuseum - Vinschgau Valley Museum
    Schluderns/Sluderno, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

Discover at the Vuseum – the Vinschgau Museum – the versatility of this unique valley with its long history, and then take a hike to the prehistoric settlement of Ganglegg or along the old watercourses Leitenwaal and Berkwaal.

    Experience the Vinschgau Valley …
The various film presentations and the walk along the water channels to the prehistoric site "Ganglegg" – well signposted – make the visit eventful. Additionally, the exhibitions in the museum change regularly.

    … Understand the Vinschgau Valley
The exhibitions help visitors understand why the Vinschgau Valley is the way it is today and how the inhabitants, the “Vinschger,” have learned to cope with the harsh local conditions over millennia.

Ancient Vinschgau: The archaeological site near Ganglegg hill is an extraordinary testimony to the historical development of settlements in the Vinschgau Valley from the Neolithic period to the Roman era. The exhibition presents exceptional artifacts depicting the life, culture, religion, and craftsmanship of that time.

Travel and Stops in Roman Times: The permanent exhibition presents a series of unique finds along the Via Claudia Augusta in the Upper Vinschgau Valley, demonstrating the importance of the valley as a transit area.

Water Channels – Water for Irrigation: Vinschgau Valley is one of the driest valleys in the Alps. Concern for water has accompanied its inhabitants since time immemorial. Together, they built the “Waale” (traditional irrigation channels) with simple means and regulated the distribution of water by local statutes.
Today, much has been replaced by modern technology, but in some places the Waale system remains intact. In 2023, the Waale on the Mals Heath were inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Swabian Children: Starting from the 17th century, poverty in the Vinschgau Valley forced parents to send their children on a very exhausting walk to Upper Swabia to find accommodation and work there. The exhibition traces the paths of the “Schwabenkinder” (Swabian children) and tells their story: from a simple life in the Vinschgau Valley to the hard daily life in a foreign land.

Travellers – “The Korrner”: Jenische, Dörcher, and Korrner were driven by hardship to distant regions. In the Vinschgau Valley, those who travelled with a cart and mostly worked as itinerant traders were called “Korrner.” They were typically registered in their home municipalities as fruit, vegetable, or livestock dealers. We distinguish between those who made their living this way and those who did so only seasonally or as a supplementary income.

Avelignese Stallion 249 Folie – The breeding of Avelignese horses in the Vinschgau Valley: In 1874, the stallion 249 Folie was born in the stables of Josef Folie and his wife Anna Fritz. Today, all purebred Avelignese horses descend from him. The documentary exhibition tells the story of Folie and his descendants in the Vinschgau Valley.

Eppan an der Weinstaße/Appiano sulla Strada del Vino, Alto Adige Wine Road

Juval Castle, the summer residence of the world-famous mountaineer, Reinhold Messner and the Messner Mountain Museum.

Medieval Juval Castle is situated on a prehistoric place of worship at the entrance to the pristine Val Senales. The castle was built around 1278 by Hugo von Montalban. In 1540, Juval Castle changed ownership and reached its heyday in those years. In 1913, the Dutch Colonial William Rowland turned up at the dilapidated castle and had it professionally restored. Since 1983 Juval Castle has been the residence of extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner and has turned Juval Castle into the main site of the MMM Messner Mountain Museum. The castle contains an extensive Tibetan collection as well as the Mountain Gallery and the ethnic mask collection with exhibits from five continents. Juval Castle also boasts some Renaissance-era frescoes that can be visited. Alpine fauna can sometimes be spotted wandering about in the castle grounds and there is also a farm with its own vineyards and a winery. The attached winery Unterortl, the organic farm Oberortl, and the Schlosswirt revitalize these small-scale cultural landscape in Lower Venosta Valley.

    Schenna/Scena, Meran/Merano and environs

In winter conditions, the via ferrata is suitable only for experienced climbers. All ascents are at your own risk.

The 500 m long climb is perfectly secured with 1000 m of steel cable, is rated at medium difficulty (A - B – in some places B/C) and is suitable for the less strong alpinists or for families with enthusiastic young climbers (14 years and older). An early start, alpine experience and a good overall physical condition is a prerequisite for the ascent of the climbing route. Along the ascent, there is no water and no escape routes. A withdrawal is possible only by down-climbing. The via ferrata is fully secured with a steel cable and no passages have to be dealt with in unsecured terrain or by free climbing. Many steep and difficult sections have been mitigated with steel clamps, which function as steps. Nevertheless, the last part of the via ferrata, the so-called Angel’s edge, presents a very impressive rock passage. The orientation of the via ferrata to the southwest allows for an early ascent of the route, and the climbing season extends well into late autumn (total climbing time: 2-3 hours).

    Gilfenklamm Gorge
    Ratschings/Racines, Sterzing/Vipiteno and environs
A nature play in white marble! The Gilfenklamm is a gorge in pure white marble and stretches from the village Stange/Stanghe into the Ratschingstal/Val Racines to the hamlet of Jaufensteg/Ponte Giovo. Wooden bridges and runways lead through the canyon and give a spectacular sight to the waterfalls. The primordial power of the water is tangible with all senses. The gorge is protected as a natural monument and is known as one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the Alpine region.

The runways through the gorge were built in 1896 and just after a few years the unfolded magic attracted numerous visitors. Beetween the great world wars the bridges were left to decay, but were restored in the early 1960s, and have since become a must see of the Sterzing-Ratschings area. The hike through the gorge lasts nearly one hour (1,5 hours with return) and is worthwhile for nature lovers, families and seniors.

The Gilfenklamm gorge is situated in the Eisacktal/Alta Val d’Isarco valley, close to Ratschings/Racines and the city of Sterzing/Vipiteno. On an established trail you can walk across this charming and breathtaking canyon with its waterfalls cascading into the depth. About 100 years ago the gorge was named after the Austrian emperor Franz Josef, but its name changed so that it is now known as the “Cascate di Stanghe” gorge. During its course, the initially small Rio di Ratschings river turns into a roaring river which has been carving its way through the marble walls for centuries. Experience the forces of nature and the uniqueness of this fabulous natural monument.

No reservation is necessary. However, it is recommended to avoid the main visiting hours (between 10.00 am and 12.30pm).
